Game Thread #125: Brewers (71-53) at Dodgers (63-60)
Today it's the so-boring-this-is-the-last-I'm-going-to-mention-him Jeff Suppan against the personification of hype, Clayton Kershaw.
If you haven't seen Kershaw's minor league numbers, check them out--they're pretty ridiculous. Usually players who are the youngest in the game are up for a reason (think Robin Yount), and Kershaw is the real deal. He and Billingsley are going to form a scary good two-headed ace monster at the top of the Dodgers' rotation next year; between the two of them in LA and the Cain/Lincecum/Sanchez troika in San Francisco, there's some amazing young pitching in the NL West. Throw in Brandon Webb, Dan Haren, Randy Johnson, Jake Peavy, and Chris Young, and, well, let's just say I'm really glad we're in a division with the Pirates and Astros instead.
Game time is 3:10 CT, and don't forget to check out the BR Game Preview.

Upcoming interviews
After the game, I’ll put up a short one I did with unsigned 32nd-round pick Colt Farrar, a HS righty from Texas, and tomorrow afternoon you’ll get Rookie-ball pitcher Nick Tyson, who has what BA called the best curveball in the system coming into the season.

Note: BA being Baseball America, not our announcer
Did our BA play minor league ball? I feel like I remember him talking about being a catcher.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
I don't think so
He played one season (1993) at St. Mary’s University in Texas. He’s seventh in career fielding percentage, ninth in career putouts, and tied for third in season putouts in their record book. I suspect he was either a first baseman or a catcher. He’s mentioned catching guys in the bullpen back when he was a minor league announcer a few times.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Which wrist did Rickie hurt?
Did you see the way he held his left wrist after he swung? It was probably the pain of being struck out though.

.500 road trip
It almost feels like a disappointment, but 3-3 isn’t a horrible trip out west. Hopefully the aces start the homestand off the right way.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Bingo.
It’s hard after the 9th inning today, but you have to focus on the big picture, or at least the slightly bigger picture. The Brewers are 11-5 this month with 11 games left to play before September. If they go 6-5 the rest of the month, they only need to play .500 ball in September to hit 90 wins, which probably gets them the wildcard. A 4-2 trip would have been nice, but I didn’t really expect to take 2 of 3 against the Dodgers with the back half of our rotation going in all 3 games. And now we get to run Sabathia/Sheets/Parra at Houston in our home park.
