It's a bit of a surprise, but for a middling NL team, the Astros match up pretty well with Sabathia.  Erstad, Loretta (I had forgotten about his year with the Red Sox), and Tejada have all spent some time in the AL, and all have 790+ OPS's in their time against him.  Of course, Erstad was better then.

This is a slightly different Astros team than we last saw--Wolf was newly acquired before our last series, but since then, Carlos Lee was lost for the season, meaning that Erstad, Blum, or both are fixtures in the starting lineup.  Those guys are pesky, sure, but it's definitely a blow to the offense.

Matchup is Wolf and Sabathia, game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Yeah.

Not to mention the sheer joy of Ned’s indignant response to those who question why there’s plenty of opportunities for some AAAA infielder to get playing time but Rivera still can’t get a sniff of the field more than once every two weeks.

I still can’t believe Ned’s comment that it’s easy to hit .300 in 50 at bats off the bench. Gee. Wonder why you never pulled that off then Nedly?

He did it in 79 at bats until his bat took September 1982 off. I wonder if Yost’s point was that it’s easier to hit .300 in 50 at bats than it is in, say, 200 at bats. A few hits falling in over 50 at bats can be the difference between .260 and .320. Somehow I doubt it, but maybe.

i dunno

i still say you give him the opportunity to prove himself good or just middle-of-the-road pinch hitting option. Perhaps he hasn’t proven himself to be elite, but he certainly hasn’t shown any woeful deficiencies.

He’s above Nyx on my personal depth chart though.

…. but considering the question that prompted the comment was an inquiry about how impressive it was that Rivera could be productive after all that off time, I think the blindingly obvious fact that it’s easier to hit .300 in 50 at bats instead of 200 was kind of beside the point.

Ned might be a decent manager. I don’t think so, but I’m not qualified to judge so I could be wrong. But good manager or not, he’s an ass who treats anyone who questions him with a contempt that suggests a profound insecurity and/or a lack of sufficient intelligence to consider for a moment that he might be wrong on something. I don’t need to be a stat guy to be dead certain about that.

Berkman was a career .300 hitter on the nose coming into the year

It’s not that surprising, is it? I think he’s demonstrated over time that he’s a significantly better hitter for average than Fielder.
