September Call-ups
As September 1st gets closer, I got to thinking about who may get added to the roster for the stretch run. The following is a brief list of players who may at least be in the discussion. The hitters...
From the DL: Branyan
From AAA: Rottino, Iribarren, Dillon, Nelson, Gwynn, Gibbons, Katin
From AA: Gamel, Escobar
From Elsewhere: Stocker
I am guessing Branyan is magically healed around the 1st (and if before than Nix gets added to the list). I would also assume that Rottino get added so that Rivera can get some rest and that Dillon and Gwynn are strong canidates. Maybe the AA guys get added to experience the pennet race. I also threw Stocker on the list since he was a surprise addition last year as a pinch runner. I also thought they may call him up again as a "reward" for going from AAA to A to fill an outfield spot when Darren Ford was traded.
Now the pitchers...
From AAA: Stetter, Dillard, DiFelice, Gulin, Erasmo Ramirez
I would think that the first two are almost automatic and that assumming DiFelice is healthy that he has a shot. Luis Pena may have been an option before he turned into Turnbow.

Soem thoughts
Gulin, Katin, Gamel, Stocker, and Ramirez aren’t on the 40 man and there is roster crunch there so I would be shocked actually if any of these guys got a call up right now. They could move Cappy off easily but I think they want to keep Cappy there to use the silly K Rod loophole for playoff rosters (the rule is silly the Brewers using it is smart). I also think Gwynn probably won’t get a call up after his poor performance in AAA this year.
All the others could be at least somewhat useful with Escobar probably topping the list of usefulness with his speed and defense so I would think they all could get called up but that still is nine call ups and I don’t think they will call up that many so I would say:
Stetter: lock being a lefty
Dillard/DiFelice: one of the two, I’ll say Difelice
Rottino: should get a call up to let Ned pinch it for Kendall but probably won’t
Iribarren: his MLE’s are looking kind of poor right now so I am going to say no
Dillon: lock
Nelson: His numbers and being a lefty should help so I think yes
Gibbons: lock from what we are hearing
So Stetter, Difelice, Dillon, Nelson, Gibbons. That is five call ups and seems reasonable. I’d like to throw Vinny in there but I have a strange feeling they won’t be.

Gibbons
Is he on the 40-man roster, or does he present problems with the roster crunch as well? I would also like to think Nelson would get called up, but if Branyan is healthy he could be the unsused lefty bat as well.

I would guess Gwynn would get a call up if only to run
They could’ve cared less about Mel Stocker’s hitting skills last year. I think having a speedy, pinch-runner type is what they’d really be after with Gwynn.

Yes but doesn't Escobar fit that position?
You may be right though TheJay and Infield Fly you are right that Gibbons needs to be added to the 40 man but all the talk was that he would be added. It should be interesting at least, to see what they do.

He could
But Gwynn’s already got MLB time under his belt and Escobar has better potential of getting pricey in arbitration down the road so they might be leery of starting his service clock (same reason I suspect the team will leave Gamel at AAA through May a la Braun next year) or having him hurt as a pinch-runner. I don’t think they have the same concerns with Tony Gwynn, Jr.

You make a good point here
But I thought sept call ups only counted as one game so it is a little lessened.

You get service time for every day you're on the roster
So a call-up on Sept. 1 would get service time through the end of the season, or 28 days on the Brewers.
For example, last year the Cubs called up outfielder Sam Fuld on September 4. Since he was on their roster from that point until the end of the season on Sept. 30, he got 27 days of MLB service time. Similarly, the Dodgers called up Chin-Lung Hu on Sept. 1 and he stayed with them for the rest of the season. Thus he entered 2008 with 30 days of major league service.

I haven't been able to figure this part out though:
would it still start the “arbitration clock” if a player is added to the 40-man but not the 25-man in September? I don’t know if service time= arbitration clock, or if either of those two were actually on the 25-man roster…
And neck size to baby eating ratio.

Yeah
All service time is equal in terms of becoming eligible for arbitration. If a player is with the major league team or on the major league disabled list in September, he accrues service time which helps get him closer to arbitration.
Note that a player who is on the 40-man roster in September doesn’t automatically get service time, though. It’s only when he’s actually called up to join the major league club that he gets it. So if Luis Pena is left in Nashville for all of September, he won’t have any major league service time.
The only place where September service time “doesn’t count” is for Rookie of the Year voting. The BBWAA doesn’t count September in their “45 days of service time” rule for rookie eligibility.

What about playoff games
If Gamel or Escobar are brought up to take the place of Cappy on the playoff roster, does that count as accrued service time?
It sure is fun down here in the weeds of the MLB CBA.

No
Postseason games don’t count as service time.

can you explain
the k-rod loophole? i’m not familiar
by marty22 on Aug 19, 2008 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
From SoSH
1. Any player on the 25-man roster come September 1st is eligible for the playoffs.
2. Any player on the DL come September 1st is eligible for the playoffs still (since it is quite obvious why they can’t be on the 25-man roster at the moment).
3. If a player is on the 60-Day DL (or is put there), his playoff eligibility can be given to ANY player in the Red Sox organization, 40-man roster or not at any time.
I can’t believe I can’t find a real site to link to but as far as I know this still is the case. So Cappy should be put on the 60 day DL then.
by dixieflatline on Aug 19, 2008 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
so...also from that thread
“If a player is moved to the 60-day DL during September, anyone in the organization can take their place. Provided it’s a pitcher for a pitcher, hitter for a hitter.”
is this correct? And could you theoretically have a pitcher play 1B for an inning or two and/or pinch-hit a few times to be considered a position player and a hitter pitch an inning Cirillo-style if you wanted to involve them in the roster exchange to get around this. It could apply to a minor leaguer in AA/AAA (ie, escobar making a 1 inning appearance) or the major leaguer you wanted to 60-day DL (Suppan or Mota filling in at first).

I think now it even doesn't have to be a pitcher for a pitcher
It could be cappy down and anyone they want up. So if they want Gamel’s bat or a 3rd catcher like Salome they could add that player to the playoff roster even. I don’t think they will use this loophole but they might.

Yeah
This post from boston.com talks about it:
Or, rather, I’ll let Red Sox director of baseball operations Brian O’Halloran explain.
“The position-player-for-position-player / pitcher-for-pitcher requirement is indeed now gone for substitutions prior to a series,” O’Halloran wrote in an e-mail. "However, teams now are allowed to substitute for an injured player during a series. Such in-series substitutions are position-player-for-position-player / pitcher-for-pitcher, and the injured player cannot be active for the remainder of that series or the next series. Those substitutions also require MLB approval.

They damn well better
No need to carry twelve pitchers in the playoffs, but it would be nice to have extra bats on the bench. If YoGa isn’t going to be ready, you have two roster spots that can be swapped out. They can go to a 10 man staff and still have 6 relievers available. Especially in the NL, having two more bench players than your opponent is a huge advantage. The only time you would run into problems is in an extra inning game, but the Brewers would have McClung and Bush/Suppan in their pen so those guys could each go multiple innings.

You are absolutely right
For a second there I was thinking that anyone n the 40 man could be added but that isn’t the case. So it looks like the current roster minus one pitcher.

What is the deal with Randy Choate?
Is he really still on the DL?
by Getting Yosted on Aug 19, 2008 11:11 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I thought he was activated from the major league DL
And then promptly outrighted to Nashville last month.

Can't trust those crappy blogs
He’s still listed as part of the 40 man roster and marked as on the DL on the front page.

Whoops, that's my bad
I actually remember reminding myself to take him off, but apparently I never did it. Guess Randy Choate doesn’t occupy much of my brainspace. Thanks for the tip.

No one's mentioned minor league Rule 5 pick Joe Bateman
Haudricourt said recently that he didn’t think Bateman was going to get the call, but you never know. Attanasio might decide to go nuts and tell Melvin to add eight relievers.

What about the Aussie?
David Welch has put up some great numbers in Hunstville this season. Along with Stetter, always nice to have another lefty.

I would like to see Nelson up.
It’s been a bit of a rocky road for him, and I would enjoy watching him pinch hit a couple of times.

Rottino
The idea of adding Rottino to “get Rivera some rest” greatly amused me.
