Game Thread #111: Brewers (61-49) at Braves (50-59)
Milwaukee Brewers at Atlanta Braves, Aug 2, 2008 2:55 PM CDT
I like winning.
The matchup this afternoon--doubtless blacked out on MLB.tv because of FOX--is CC Sabathia and Charlie Morton. Morton has made eight career starts, all this season, and his performance against the Crew back in June was actually his second best outing. That isn't saying much, since he comes into this afternoon's game with an ERA over seven.
Game time is 2:55 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Branyan must've needed a day off
y’know, with that heavy workload of 1 start in the past week and a half. Good thing we have Counsell around to keep Russell fresh.
Too bad we don’t have a backup catcher, either, one would come in handy when the starter has played 5 straight games, and it’s a hot afternoon in Atlanta, and the starter is OPSing .429 since July 7th.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
Interesting
You mention Kendall struggling at the plate back to July 7th as a reason to have Rivera start but you didn’t mention Branyan OPSing .524 with 10 K’s in 50 PA back to June 27th as a reason he might not be starting (Counsell’s not doing hitting either but he’s a better defender).
Another reason Kendall might be playing is because Mike Rivera hasn’t caught Sabathia before and they might not want to mess with what’s worked.

"doing hitting"
Yeah, that sounds good.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
And since June 22nd, Counsell is OPSing .408 :)
the point is, though, that Counsell < Branyan at third base, and I wish they would rest Kendall more often.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
Oooh
and Russel’s still OPSing .938 on the year despite the cold stretch, slugging over .600. I wouldn’t play Counsell at third unless absolutely necessary, he already spells JJ enough at short.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
Counsell has started at short fifteen times this year
Most recently on the 26th against Houston, next to Durham at second.

Hopefully
those of you able to watch the game on FOX can provide some good descriptions today … I am relying on Uecker and Powell.
Well,
the announcers are being kind and are talking about the 8 game road winning streak, and not mentioning a certian other streak.

Inning over
Let’s see what CC can do with a Chipper-less, McCann-less Braves offense.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Seconded
I try to stay positive on guys, but my patience is really wearing thin.

Sabathia
I wonder if he just figures there won’t be any double plays behind him.

Weird
Leo Mazzone is the color analyst for the KC-CHI game on Fox. I’m surprised he wasn’t rocking back and forth in the booth during the pre-game comments.

If you want to play Counsell
put him eat second and get some pop in the lineup at third

Weeks has to go next year
There has to be a better option somewhere in all of baseball that we can get to play 2nd base. Weeks is just killing us with his bat and now with his glove.
If Loving CC is wrong I do not want to be right
I wouldn't mind
Hall at 2nd, Escobar at SS, and Hardy at 3rd.

I think Hall might have something to say about that.
Didn’t he finally complain a little bit about moving around so much when he demanded a trade? Anyway, I’d be just as happy to have Hardy at second and keep Hall at third. I suppose whichever position we have/can get the better player at.
I also wouldn’t cut Rickie from the team yet unless we garner a good amount in a trade. At least keep him as a backup for one more year just in case.
I happen to agree...
... but I doubt it will happen.

I'm sorry
I just hate Rickie Weeks so much right now. His defense is awful, so his inability to hit the damn ball makes me hate him all the more.

That is the thing about Rickie
We have been willing to put up with his defensive misgivings because of his offensive upside, but at some point you can’t put up with those defensive issues if he isn’t going to make up for it with the bat.

now the announcers are talking about Francouer
Looking at Braves sites, “Frenchy” gets a heapin’ helpin’ of hate.
So does Bill Hall here
Same troubles hitting, displeasure with the organization, etc.

I think Bill Hall's
gotten some goodwill back though, especially after the Cards series. I wonder if Frenchy has undergone any such rehabilitation?

I don’t have the strong feelings, especially negative, toward announcers that many people have, but I have to say Karros is a dork.
So what you're saying...
is that you like cliche ridden banter between two people who usually don’t know how to work together? But this is just too much for you?

Gord Ash
Heard part of a radio interview with him yesterday or the day before. He was asked about CC and his pitch counts. He said no problem, no worries.
Cam's request for a medical waiver
I wonder whatever happened to that? Maybe taking a stimulant was self medicating.
I think if Kotchman gets on they'll go to the pen
If Kotchman makes an out, they’ll let CC face the righty Francoeur with the hopes of getting him out and forcing the Braves hand when the lefty Kelly Johnson comes up with two out.

Or they'll just bring in the righty to face the righty
