Apparently the lack of a routine was messing with Bush. McClung is disappointed and doesn't want to be a long reliever, so he's going to be used in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

I'm actually with them on this one

I think Clung can be a really good 1 or 2 inning setup guy, which is something we could definitely use. I wouldn’t trust Bush in anything more than a mop-up / long role. If Bush starts to suck, then they can swap but I don’t have a problem with Clung to the pen.

And neck size to baby eating ratio.

it's more Bush's issues here

Apparently Bush sucks without a routine. That was pretty obvious from the past few starts. McClung really will do whatever is asked, although getting up about 80,000 times in the pen without being used doesn’t do him any good either.

As for McClung’s quotes—yeah, I’d be POed too if, being the fourth-best pitcher on the team, I got stuck doing garbage time while the garbage pitchers got used in high-leverage situations.

Wait, I'm confused now- are you actually Seth McClung? :)

My only concern is that Villy becomes the “long man” now and is used in garbage situations. That’s what Mota is for, Villy should be used in higher-leverage middle innings situations with McClung.

And neck size to baby eating ratio.

Nah, I'm just a complainy fangirl

I talked to McClung for about 10 seconds a month ago, but that’s it for personal interest. XD

Villanueva is not garbage either and should not be treated as such. He has a good chance of getting his starting job back next spring training, I’d hope.

Mota? Yeah, I’m done with watching his sorry self pitch out of situations he should never be allowed to be in.

Correct me if im wrong here

But dont we desperately need a reliable, long reliever right now considering how much our bullpen sort of sucks? Eating up the rest of the game after the starter, IMO, is a pretty important contribution and a big impact on how we finish out the season.

You're implying that Yost knows how to use a long reliever

Yes, the Brewers do need a reliable long reliever.
Yes, Seth McClung would make an ideal long reliever.
But Yost tends to let his starters (save McClung, oddly enough) go until their arms fall off and/or the Brewers’ opponents have an insurmountable lead late in the game.
There is very little point in having a long reliever if Yost will not put him in before the 7th or 8th inning. What you have there, as I said above, is a short-inning garbage man.

by morineko on Aug 2, 2008 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even if there is an ideal situation for a long relief appearance, Yost will go with a pitcher an inning with an occasional exception.

Christ!

I REAALLLY didn’t mean to imply Yost knew what he was doing. My bad.

I actually like this

After all, lets not forget that Bush was doing really well before the All Star Break. After that, he didn’t pitch for 16 days competively and struggled when he finally did. He looked good against the Cubs until that 5th or 6th inning, but I still expected that with him getting back into a routine. McClung was in the bullpen earlier this year, so that adjustment should be a lot easier for him than Bush. A 5th starter platoon was…in reality, one of the dumbest ideas I’ve ever heard of. And McClung will get his shot next year, as well. Plus Bush will probably get bumped once we get Gallardo back anyways crosses fingers.

This simutax makes me feel like a koala bear crapped a rainbow in my brain!

Right now I’d rather cross my fingers that Suppan is the one bumped from the rotation.
I don’t care about his start the other day. I was at the debacle to Houston, and as such now have a personal vendetta against him.

Exactly backwards

Odd man out of the rotation is first man back into the rotation if an injury occurs. McClung being the conditioned over the last few years as a bullpen arm is most likely to lose the conditioning he has built up over the last two months as a starter. Bush, having been a starter for the last forever is most likely to be able to switch back into an emergency starter role and still pitch 6+ innings without tiring.

Ben Sheets is still on the staff, so these things are still a concern.

Yeah, but...

McClung’s had issues going past six innings (and recently even getting to six – once in his last five starts) anyway, so if he has to make an emergency start and can only go 4 or 5 at first it wouldn’t be much different than what he gives them right now.

Seems like the right move to me.

Here’s the Marcels projections for the six Brewer starters, ERA and FIP:

C.C. Sabathia: 3.47, 3.41
Ben Sheets: 3.66, 3.56
Dave Bush: 4.61, 4.24
Jeff Suppan: 4.33, 4.58
Carlos Villanueva: 4.23, 4.33
Seth McClung: 5.31, 4.95

All stats as of the 29th. Looking at it, the guy getting shafted out of the rotation is actually Villanueva.

by cwyers on Aug 3, 2008 1:16 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You're missing Manny Parra.

He would bump Villy out of the top 5, methinks.

by NoahJ on Aug 3, 2008 1:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes and no.

Manny Parra: 4.02,4.07

Jeff Suppan is probably the guy that Parra/Villy/etc. should bump from the rotation.

by cwyers on Aug 3, 2008 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

but that doesn’t take into account money put into contract along with pride of management. I think that many people here would be happy to see Suppan bumped from the rotation, though probably for Mclung rather than Villy.

Is it possible to get a marcels projection based on Villy’s starting stats. If I remember correct, he wasn’t too hot in the starters role, but has been doing well in the BP.
