Game Thread #128: Astros (64-62) at Brewers (72-55)
Houston Astros at Milwaukee Brewers, Aug 20, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
Last time Manny Parra and Wandy Rodriguez faced off, Wandy came out on top. Of course, Michael Bourn had an extra-base hit, since he's had 16 of those this year, and he has to cram those into a small number of Astros-Brewers games. Rodriguez has only had one good start in four tries since then, though, while Parra has...uh, also not been very good.
Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Oh wait
Isn’t he that mythical beast that has been spotted in and around the SE Wisconsin region, but has yet to be scientifically proven? I bet it turns out to be a Kendall wearing a Rivera costume just like that bigfoot “finding” this past week.

Why play Weeks?
reduce offensive production??? Nice plan Nedly!
The Bambi's Bombers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
Was this comment meant for Tom H's blog?
Weeks has a .273/.369/.432 line since the ASB and a LHP is on the mound. Makes sense to me.
I wonder if he's healthy
Did you see him flinch and draw his hand up to his body a couple days ago? He’s got a reputation for downplaying his health problems.
I’m beginning to wonder if the training staff is competent.
Who's this kid they have catching?
I guess now that Kendal scored his millions for next year, they can let Rivera play.
In play, run(s)
I had to wait a few seconds to find out there was also “out(s)” on the Fielder sac-fly. Stupid Game-Day, getting my hopes up!
It's called "playing the percentages."
Two nights ago, while riding in a taxi through the downtown here, he flicked on coverage of the Milwaukee Brewers’ brilliant CC Sabathia throwing strikes, and he became fixed on that little screen. He headed into a shopping mall, but kept checking and seeing strike after strike after …“I couldn’t take my eyes off CC,” Snell recalled. “And you know what? The more I watched, the more I knew what I had to do.”
And so, he took the mound last night and tore through St. Louis for seven scoreless innings and eight strikeouts to carry the Pirates to a 4-1 victory last night at Busch Stadium.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Finally something works for the Pirates
"Brett Favre looks like a man in a parking lot playing with boys." - John Madden
"Pujols just unloaded." - Bob Uecker
At what point does Rickie become gritty
Sub-par average, some power, sees alot of pitches per AB, close to team lead in HBP, impressive split between average on OBP. He has all the tools for a good KUG rating, once everyone forgets he was the second pick in his draft.
Not to get too cheeky, but...

Sadly, there definitely seems to be a racial component to perceived grittiness.

that's twice in two days
that the brewers have tagged from 1B to 2B

Prince
2/3 of the way to the SF in a game record.

Loretta is also notable for another, topical reason
He has the Brewers’ record for most 2-SF games in a season; he had three in 1997.

Rock
He’s really upset about Tejada and Berkman being mad at Ed Romero.

Hey, he held the lead, despite missing the strike zone a lot. That’s not gritty?

Hey
Did you know that Ty Wigginton is not a typical leadoff hitter?

Ummm
no visit to the mound?

Didn't you hear?
Like with Brad Ausmus, we have a coach behind the plate. Saves us innumerable mound visits, which can later be exchanged for goods (cash value 1/1000 cent).

That's fantastic!
I’m going to use mine for a free medium soft drink at Chick-fil-a.

I think you mean a McDonald's Southern-Style Chicken Sandwich
What are you doing in an active game thread, anyway?

Tejada and Berkman
What do they think of Ed Romero now?

Textbook
How to waste a key leadoff walk in a close game.
Think they’ll have that one on Brewers Live post-game?
It's all entertainment
at least carlos cant give up a bomb to andre eitier...

Should I finally put CC the lesser in as the starter on the sidebar?

That might make me a tad bit sick. Perhaps Hall will get another AB and…. who am I kidding.. K again.
By comparison
Hall is 36 points off his OPS from last season, which was 159 points off his OPS from 2006. Although I doubt it’ll come to pass this way, but we’ll be in the market for a 3B next season, even if his name is JJ Hardy.

92 from Villanueva
Not bad.
That was really weird. Rivera dropped the popup and they still got the out at first.

Props to that Weeks character
For going to first base to get the throw.
-1000 grit points to Loretta.

MSNBC
is rebroadcasting the U.S./Japan baseball game right now. With the score 0-0 in the 11th inning, they are employing the new rule where each team starts with 2 runners on the bases and nobody out. Interesting.
and two straight base hits!!!
The Bambi's Bombers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
Weeks, 0-1 with 3 runs scored
Clearly Rickie is a run scorer.
Does Parra
get to shove PRince now?? ;-))

Prince and Rickie are not exactly cool under pressure on D

Sheesh
A bunt staying fair, an iffy HBP, and an infield error. Gagne doesn’t need this kind of help screwing up.

Loads the bases on seven pitches
Then gets out of the inning on two.

that could have been so much worse
i thought we were going to blow the lead for sure
How can you not love Carsten Charles?
17 pitches to both teams combined
In the 8th inning.

Gabe Kapler
I really thought he would suck, so glad i was wrong.
