Brewers Leadoff Hitters Since 1992

1992 was the last year Molitor was in Milwaukee, but he didn’t lead off much that season. Since the start of 1992, only six Brewers have started more than 81 games in any season as the team’s leadoff hitter:

  1. Fernando Vina (1998) – 158
  2. Scott Podsednik (2004) – 150
  3. Brady Clark (2005) – 145
  4. Pat Listach (1992) – 108
  5. Rickie Weeks (2008) – 97
  6. Ronnie Belliard (2000) – 92
  7. Rickie Weeks (2007) – 88

Weeks, obviously, is the guy to show up on that list twice. He’s still got a way to go to catch the most leadoff starts total in that span:

  1. Fernando Vina – 375
  2. Rickie Weeks – 273
  3. Pat Listach – 263
  4. Scott Podsednik – 209
  5. Brady Clark – 200

So, I guess you could say Weeks is one of the best leadoff hitters by virtue of the fact he’s one of the few to actually occupy the spot regularly for more than one season, but that’s lame. Let’s look at the on-base percentages of the guys showing up on those lists. I’ve put their OBP in a Brewers uniform and their career OBP.

  • Clark – .361 in MIL/.358 career
  • Weeks – .351/.351
  • Vina – .349/.348
  • Podsednik – .343/.337
  • Belliard – .341/.339
  • Listach – .322/.316

So Weeks’ OBP skills don’t separate him from the pack. Maybe mixing slugging back in to get OPS helps him out:

  • Clark – .754/.744
  • Weeks – .753/.753
  • Podsednik – .744/.713
  • Vina – .738/.727
  • Belliard – .737/.754
  • Listach – .638/.625

So where Clark had the advantage in getting on base, Weeks makes up for it in slugging. I think Weeks’ speed edges him ahead of Clark, but it’s not a runaway for Rickie.
