Per Tom H at the JS Blog, Mat Gamel has been promoted to Nashville. The thought is to give him a week at AAA before deciding if he should be brought up with September callups.

Most Interesting

That’ll be something to watch this coming week.

Wonder if they’ll bump Taylor Green into Gamel’s spot on the back end for Huntsville as well.

'Audition' does not begin well

He’s 0-4, with 4 strikeouts no less, and committed a fielding error.

And neck size to baby eating ratio.

Ouch...

I think it has to be said, at this point anyways, don’t you think Michael Brantley would be a better Lefty to bring up? Gamel hasn’t been able to do anything since LaPorta was shipped. And as a plus, Brantley would give you a ton of speed on the bases, and add a back up to the ever hot hitting Cameron right now.

Brantley's only 21

I think the role they’re looking to fill is lefty pinch hitter, and Gamel’s power makes him a good option for that position. Plus, third base might be the only position where any possible playing time is available, considering Cam so damn good and Kapler needs to get some time. I think the pinch runner is Mel Stocker, and I’d wager that nobody gets the call from Huntsville. I hope Brad Nelson is the pinch hitter.

Sabathia PTBNL

Cleveland writer Terry Pluto just <a href=’http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/blog/index.ssf/2008/08/terrys_talkin_about_tribes_per.html">remarked yesterday that he thought Brantley would be the PTBNL:

I have no inside knowledge, but my guess is the Indians will take Michael Brantley from Class AA Huntsville as the final player in the CC Sabathia deal.

Given that he admits to have no inside knowledge, it would be nice if he gave a reason why he thought it was gonna be Brantley.

To add an actual comment

He probably has no clue. Imagine a reverse situation, Haudricourt would probably name someone random that he thought might get picked, just to satisfy some readers.

It’s gonna suck whoever they pick, but I’m leaning towards hoping they take Brantley. Lucroy is our top prospect given the obviously accurate Brewcrewball poll, I think Green is going to put up Gamel-like numbers at AA next year and can play second, so I’d prefer it be Brantley to those two. I’m just not sold on Brantley’s skill set anywhere but center field, and the organization doesn’t seem to have any confidence in him in center.

So, really, it depends on the fourth guy in the mix if there are in fact four options. But of the three we think are on the list for sure, I’d say I’d hate to lose Lucroy most, then Green, then Brantley.

True

But Clayton Kershaw is only 20 and he’s at the Major League level pitching on a team in a similar stance as us. Brantley has 28 SB’s with a near .400 OBP to go with the .300+ AVG. Even if he is the possible PTBNL, we can get some great use out of this guy for September.

As for the PTBNL situation. I thought that Melvin claimed there were some dates proposed or laid out and about 4 players in question. I’m beginning to think that this move will happen at season’s end when the Indians have had a collective effort seeing these guys grind it out. So just because you may put one of the guys in the spotlight shouldn’t be a real drawback if he helps the team achieve it’s now or never stance should it?

/me saying that all of course…I’d love Brantley as a Brewer for many years to come.

I guess

the Brewers are fans of the small sample size? A week in AAA will show how he will do in the bigs?

Quotes about Gamel's promotion
“I’m excited,” said Gamel, who’s been a man of few words all season. “I feel a lot better at the plate. I’m just starting to see the ball better again and taking better swings.

”A change of scenery may be a good thing. I’ve got to go up there, relax and just play my game.“

”Defensively, the best thing I can go off of is what I’ve seen this year," Stars manager Don Money said. “But (first baseman Chris) Errecart has played with him and caught his throws, and he said he’s improved 200 percent.”

Errecart

In Chris’ head, I bet he bit his lip from saying he couldn’t possibly have done worse than Brevard. But in Gamel’s defense, no pun intended, he has basically split the E’s in half.
