Game Thread #133: Brewers (77-55) at Cardinals (73-60)

Milwaukee Brewers @ St. Louis Cardinals

Fun fact: The Brewers have the fourth best record in baseball right now.  Only the Cubs, Rays, and Angels are better, and one could make a case that the Angels play in a weaker division.  (They get to play the Mariners...a lot.)

Great matchup of young pitchers tonight: Manny Parra against Adam Wainwright.  Parra is coming off of two out of three nice outings, while Wainwright has had one solid start since returning from injury.  My only prediction is that neither team will score 12 runs tonight.

Game time is 7:15 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Thanks Jeff,

now it’s going to be a 30 run slug fest. Now, I’m worried, because frankly, Albert Pujols scares the hell out of me, having a no doubt MVP caliber season.

any room on the bandwagon?

Tigers fan, been living in Wisconsin the last 5 years, so I’m already a Brewers follower, if only by proximity. I’m a cubs hater, does that help get me in good standing around here?

Been reading some of the stuff on BCB during the summer, but haven’t jumped aboard yet….the way the Tigers just imploded in late July just about killed the Bless You Boys SB Nation blog where I was hanging out, but I’ve taken a couple weeks off from caring about baseball, and find that I want to be in on a playoff race in September.

So, if you’ll let me tag along for the ride….

Always plenty of room on the Brewers bandwagon!

Can we be sure you’re not classified as a type A free agent? We don’t want to be sending Bless You Boys any comp picks now. We value those around here.

Well........

………. I can’t speak for everybody here, but a Cubs hater is always cool with me. Especially sense you are a Tigers fan, and we Brewers fans can all relate with blown expectations after last season’s roller coaster ride, and who blew ’em more than the Tigers this year? Not trying to be offensive, just sympathetic.

"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"

by BrewerLover on Aug 27, 2008 5:54 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no offense taken….for a team that was slated to be the greatest offensive juggernaut the major leagues have ever been seen to be shut out double digit times is embarrassing. To have multiple versions of Derrick Turnbow trying to close out games, starting with the original Roller Coaster man, Todd Jones, that’s just painful. And then the starting pitching failing to live up to any hype, too?

It’s not even a season that Tiger fans will be able to look back and say coulda shoulda about, our team just stunk from the start….and now, we’re just hoping to finish at .500….

Sure thing

Here’s a quick rundown on how to get around down BCB way:

Oh yeah, this is BCB. The SBN blog supporting the Cubs can be referred to by any number of names (I prefer “Bleed Cubbie Bleed” myself), but it can never be abbreviated “BCB”.

Kirbir sounds fun, and it’ll be exciting for awhile, especially if your previous bedroom experience has been limited to this kingdom of life, but then one night you’ll come home early and find her licking maple syrup out of your dad’s belly button, so don’t say you weren’t forewarned.

Prince Fielder vegetarianism jokes are so overdone. Don’t go there.

Carlos Zambrano baby-eating jokes never get old. Go there, you know you want to.

The last rule, and this cannot be emphasized enough, is that Tony Gwynn is not the center fielder of the future.

BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"

Of course not...

“center fielder of the future” would imply he’s not ready to lead the team to victory right now!

Tony Gwynn is not the center fielder of the future

Well, duh. Tony Gwynn Jr., however, is the centerfielder of the future. :)

Other tips:

- Don’t say “FIRST!!” in any thread, at any time

- Be all arrogant, unfunny, and jerk-like, just like the rest of us

- Reference KUGS often

- Carlos Zambrano baby-eating jokes never get old.
Also, Fukudome Asian jokes.

The only recent tigers/brewers history I recall is going to Miller Park and seeing….who was it….Rickie weeks, maybe, hiting a Joel Zumaya fastball over the center field wall a couple of years ago….

Of course, when I was in Cooperstown over the summer, I did take a picture of a certain Justin Verlander memento, so strike the first thought.

appreciate the welcome

Joe Bateman

Where does he rate on the Bradford/Shouse/Ziegler/Marmol/Randy Johnson spectrum of arm angles? I’m assuming someone here has seen him pitch. I think I’ve read that he tops out in the mid-80s, but that’s not a concern so much, Ziegler does too.

I’m officially on the Bateman Bandwagon, feel free to join. He’s put up a minor league FIP of 3.80 and has given up 4 homers and only 6 doubles this year in 73 innings! His splits obviously favor righthanders, but we’ll have Shouse and Stetter to use if Batman gets in a jam and has to face a lefty.

50% GB rate on the season is very solid. It’s not quite Ziegler’s 68 percent that he had in about 30 minor league innings this year, but it’s encouraging and fits with what Josh has said about sidearmers getting more drop and movement on their pitches. And unlike Ziegler, he’s struck out a total of 8.76 per 9, that’s almost 2 better than Ziegler did in the minors.

So I’m hoping they call him and Gamel up.

Also, he could be a pinch-hitter! His wikipedia page says that he hit a homer in his only at-bat in A ball with the Giants. And they better play a the batman theme song when he comes in.

As long as we're introducing ourselves...

I’ve been visiting BCB daily since April and lurking on most every game thread since the All-Star Break, so I suppose now’s as good a time as any to jump in. You all seem like a fun group of people to listen to games with.

I’m a Brewers fan from my childhood days of Yount and Molitor, quit following the team when I moved to Nebraska in the mid-90s (hence the way-too-obvious username) and picked ’em back up before this year. And not a moment too soon, either.

I’m not quite sure I understand yet what KUGs are, but I’ll try to refer to them whenever possible.

It has a Formula!

1000(SH/PA + HBP/PA + CS/PA) / 100(HR/PA + IBB/PA + GIDP/PA + SO/PA + SB/PA) * 1- (H/XBH) * (GB rate) * 1.05 if age=30+ * 1.05 if height=<72" * (3)

No, actually, that’s the formula. I bet everyone thinks it’s a joke; that actually is the KUG formula. Kendall’s first on the team with 37.8 KUGs.

Remember this?
They weren’t made for Bo Ryan, but Wisconsin fans didn’t care.

The Badger backers stumbled upon the Nebraska Clothing Co. in the Old Market and bought all of the “I’m a BOLIEVER” T-shirts. The shirts, referencing Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini and not Ryan, the Wisconsin basketball head coach, were all sold as of Saturday.

“I would say there was probably around 30 of them,” said Debbie Meyer, owner of the store. “Two gals came in right when I opened on Friday and asked why we had the shirts. When I told them, they called friends back in Wisconsin and bought some for them, too.”

Steve Spriester came up with the idea through a text-messaging conversation with a friend about who would be the next NU football coach. He said the demand for the men’s (red shirt, white lettering) and women’s (white shirt, red lettering) shirts are just a lucky bounce of sorts.

“We’ve got an unintentionally hot item on our hands,” Spriester said. “We’re just Nebraska fans who wanted Bo Pelini four years ago and wanted to show our support. It kind of steamrolled into something bigger this weekend.”

Spriester said the shirts can be purchased at spreenjab.com. He said there were no immediate plans to start saturating the Madison, Wis., market just yet.

“It’s kind of just a hobby,” he said of the T-shirt business. “But it definitely was a pretty funny story.”

in the ironic gritty part of the formula

if you insist on rewarding CS and punishing SB for some unknown reason, then you should reward fouls-on-pitches-down-the-middle. I don’t know if that data is readily available though.

by PagsBrewCrew on Aug 27, 2008 7:40 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, that has to get changed

I don’t want to reward SBs- because then guys like Joey Gathright get a higher KUG than Kendall because they’re really fast. Really fast guys aren’t gritty (maybe because they’re black?). If anyone has suggestions, let me know.

by Jordan M on Aug 27, 2008 7:49 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You could subtract the absolute value of the standard deviations from the mean in raw SB and SB%. That way anyone who steals a lot or a little and too well or too poorly will be penalized. Or maybe set your SB total target at one std dev above the mean and do the subtractions from there. That sounds like a gritty fulcrum.
