Game Thread #134: Brewers (77-56) at Pirates (57-76)
Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug 29, 2008 6:05 PM CDT
The biggest baseball news in Pittsburgh these days is surely the Pedro Alvarez saga, while for the Brewers, it's probably that the Cubs beat the Phillies 3-2 earlier today, featuring yet another late-inning comeback for Chicago (including another bases-loaded walk). So much for that vaunted Phillies bullpen. Rich Harden was mortal this time out at least. Then again, considering where we are relative to both teams at this point, maybe we should have been cheering for the Cubs anyway.
In other Brewers news, the Tigers blogger I mentioned before who simulates Elias' free agent rankings put up the ones for NL infielders. Neither Ray Durham nor Craig Counsell are projected to qualify even as Type B free agents, though Durham is pretty close.
Anyway, as usual, don't forget to check out the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Jeeze
For such a “great” team, the Cubs sure seem to squeeze by in the late innings about every other game. Talent or luck?
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
The Brewers are 14 games over .500 on one run games. Talent or Luck?
Meanwhile, the Cubs sure do outscore opponents by a lot on average. They win a lot when they get ahead. They win a lot when they get behind. The key pattern here is that they win a lot.
its all luck
after all only luck could lead the Cubs to having the best record, RS/RA, ERA, OPB, Overall Offense ect ect
Wow
MLB is making Eric Hosmer sit out until the Alvarez thing is resolved. Hosmer can’t be very happy with Boras right now.
In other, shocking, news, no Brewers made the AZL All-Star team. But they’re playing so well!

There were too many outfielders at Nashville
And no room at AA, either, he was the casualty, there was some speculation that there’s a deal in place that he gets called up September 1st to make up for having to play at A for a while- but that’s all speculation. I don’t know about playing 2b though, I don’t think he’s played there much.
Tues: George (34, throw) Mon: George 3 E (33, throwing, throwing, throwing)
and does Brevard suppress average as well as HRs?
He’s hitting well, but he’s advanced for the league, so that’s probably part or most of it?
Yeah, he's a total non-prospect with the bat
He’s just a fast guy.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Looks like he was drafted as a 2B way back when, by Kansas City, but hasn’t played it much or at all since then. He certainly hasn’t played it since 2003, when BR’s fielding stats kick in.

He’s got to be really sick of the Brewers.

His last 3 starts against Milwaukee
From BF.net’s IGT:

Tues: George (34, throw) Mon: George 3 E (33, throwing, throwing, throwing)
He actually looks like a hybrid of Sloth and Chunk, amazingly

BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Silly Braun
the cleanup hitter’s supposed to do that after Braun gets on
That happened last year against the Reds, too, against Dumatrait, or a very similar sequence to this.
Tues: George (34, throw) Mon: George 3 E (33, throwing, throwing, throwing)
Actually
That was the game with back-to-back-to-back homers to start the game wasn’t it?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
yeah, you're right
3 homers in a row, then they got another run with Prince and Hart hits. Estrada also homered in that one.
Tues: George (34, throw) Mon: George 3 E (33, throwing, throwing, throwing)
Ooh, good call
There’s another highlight for facebook. Thanks for reminding me.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Just to recap
Top 1st: Milwaukee
- R. Weeks homered to deep center
- J.J. Hardy homered to deep right
- R. Braun homered to deep center
- P. Fielder singled to left center
- C. Hart singled to center, P. Fielder to second
- T. Shearn relieved P. Dumatrait
- K. Mench singled to center, P. Fielder to third, C. Hart to second
- J. Estrada hit sacrifice fly to left, P. Fielder scored, C. Hart to third, K. Mench to second
- B. Hall grounded into double play first to shortstop to catcher, C. Hart out at home
Both Weeks and Braun had two homers, and Yahoo named JJ Hardy the Player of the Game. Cold shit.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
that was a fun one
If I remember correctly, that was on the same day as the Packers’ season opener and I was in the 1% of Wisconsinites who watched the Crew instead of the football game.
YoGanna win with Gallardo on the mound.
I was also in this 1%
It was on TV. I remember one game, I think in ‘06, that wasn’t on TV and every radio station in the area carried the Packers. I couldn’t even listen to or watch the Brewers.
I don’t hate the Packers, but I’m jealous of the attention they get.
Tues: George (34, throw) Mon: George 3 E (33, throwing, throwing, throwing)
cool video
the stadium was sure empty at the start of that game.

That's right!
I remember switching back and forth between them with my brother and missing both of the first two homers. After we switched back to the Packers again, we joked that now Braun was gonna homer.

my proudest moment of little league ball
was when I missed the ball with my glove, but managed to catch the ball with my bare hand about a foot behind it. Had plenty of time to double-up the runner (who probably saw it miss my glove).

He sure did look safe in the highlight video

this is surprising
If you had told me this morning that there would be something closely resembling, but not quite exactly, a pitchers’ duel between David Bush and Tom Gorzelanny, I would have laughed at you.
(What I would be even more surprised at is someone telling me that Gorzo has closed his mouth any time during the game.)
Why not put the tiring righty on the mound
It’s not like the opposing lineup is seeing him for the fourth time and they bat left, left, switch, left, left or anything.

Gorzelanny
I think I made him mad with my post in the first inning (not to mention a few text messages). Clearly that’s the reason we can’t hit.

Denny Bautista
It’s been two weeks since Jose Bautista was sent to Toronto and while it’s hard to read, I think Denny’s still got D. BAUTISTA on his back (he definitely had it last weekend). Nice.

All the Pittsburgh teams wear the same colors
Black and gold. Pirates, Penguins and Steelers. I’m not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, you could wear your football team’s tshirt and not stick out at all. On the other, I like how each of my teams has their own identities.
