Game Thread #134: Brewers (77-56) at Pirates (57-76)

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug 29, 2008 6:05 PM CDT

Dave Bush vs. Tom Gorzelanny tonight.

The biggest baseball news in Pittsburgh these days is surely the Pedro Alvarez saga, while for the Brewers, it's probably that the Cubs beat the Phillies 3-2 earlier today, featuring yet another late-inning comeback for Chicago (including another bases-loaded walk). So much for that vaunted Phillies bullpen. Rich Harden was mortal this time out at least. Then again, considering where we are relative to both teams at this point, maybe we should have been cheering for the Cubs anyway.

In other Brewers news, the Tigers blogger I mentioned before who simulates Elias' free agent rankings put up the ones for NL infielders. Neither Ray Durham nor Craig Counsell are projected to qualify even as Type B free agents, though Durham is pretty close.

Anyway, as usual, don't forget to check out the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Jeeze

For such a “great” team, the Cubs sure seem to squeeze by in the late innings about every other game. Talent or luck?

Ryan Braun: He loves it.

The Brewers are 14 games over .500 on one run games. Talent or Luck?

Meanwhile, the Cubs sure do outscore opponents by a lot on average. They win a lot when they get ahead. They win a lot when they get behind. The key pattern here is that they win a lot.

Hey thanks

by SRB on Aug 29, 2008 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

its all luck

after all only luck could lead the Cubs to having the best record, RS/RA, ERA, OPB, Overall Offense ect ect

by ACB on Aug 29, 2008 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Clearly.

That’s why I attributed every single Cubs victory to luck in an entirely non-facetious manner, only a fool would see it any other way!

Ryan Braun: He loves it.

Wow

MLB is making Eric Hosmer sit out until the Alvarez thing is resolved. Hosmer can’t be very happy with Boras right now.

In other, shocking, news, no Brewers made the AZL All-Star team. But they’re playing so well!

sort of a tangent

but why is Mel Stocker at Brevard and is he really playing second base?

by ol Pete on Aug 29, 2008 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

There were too many outfielders at Nashville

And no room at AA, either, he was the casualty, there was some speculation that there’s a deal in place that he gets called up September 1st to make up for having to play at A for a while- but that’s all speculation. I don’t know about playing 2b though, I don’t think he’s played there much.

by battlekow on Aug 29, 2008 6:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Just to recap

Top 1st: Milwaukee
- R. Weeks homered to deep center
- J.J. Hardy homered to deep right
- R. Braun homered to deep center
- P. Fielder singled to left center
- C. Hart singled to center, P. Fielder to second
- T. Shearn relieved P. Dumatrait
- K. Mench singled to center, P. Fielder to third, C. Hart to second
- J. Estrada hit sacrifice fly to left, P. Fielder scored, C. Hart to third, K. Mench to second
- B. Hall grounded into double play first to shortstop to catcher, C. Hart out at home

Both Weeks and Braun had two homers, and Yahoo named JJ Hardy the Player of the Game. Cold shit.

It was on TV. I remember one game, I think in ‘06, that wasn’t on TV and every radio station in the area carried the Packers. I couldn’t even listen to or watch the Brewers.

I don’t hate the Packers, but I’m jealous of the attention they get.
