Kremblas Reveals 8 September AAA Callups, UPDATE: 2 from AA as well?
Here's the list of the players that are getting the call from Nashville on Monday, according to an audio interview with AAA manager Frank Kremblas last night:
RHP Tim Dillard
LHP Mitch Stetter
RHP Mark DiFelice
IF Joe Dillon
C Vinny Rottino
3B Mat Gamel
OF Tony Gwynn Jr.
1B Brad Nelson
Only Gamel has to be added to the 40-man roster. Keep in mind that this is only the callups from AAA- there's still room for Mel Stocker to be recalled from Brevard County, or maybe someone from Huntsville. If you count on Branyan being back eventually and Stocker getting called up, there's room for 5 more players total.
The other two who were speculated to be called up from AAA are OF Jay Gibbons and RHP Joe Bateman.
UPDATE: A former coach of Angel Salome's posted a thread on Brewerfan.net about Salome getting called up- no official word, but he knows Salome personally and isn't just making stuff up. There's also plenty of speculation that Alcides Escobar is going to get a callup as well; it would make sense because he's already on the 40-man roster and isn't scheduled to go to the Arizona Fall League. Salome would have to be added to the 40-man (outright Richie Gardner?) and someone would replace him on the AFL roster.

What does Gulin need to do to get called up?
(The correct answer, “be younger than 30 and throw more than 85 mph,” is not what I really find acceptable.)

Hit better than .034?
But seriously, they already had DiFelice on the 40-man roster to fill the soft-tossing, long-relief role and two lefty relievers as well. If it was a 45-man roster, he might get a shot but I think they just ran out of spots they were willing to chance on him adapting to the bullpen.

I wonder if they'd keep him on the radar if they needed someone to start a meaningless game at the end of the month
It’d probably be hard to stay sharp if he wasn’t pitching anywhere, though.
Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw) Mon: George 3 E (33, throwing, throwing, throwing)

FWIW...
Guys like Gulin will occasionally get a courtesy release so they can go pitch in some indy league team’s late-season/playoff games (and earn a bit extra money). It’s not terribly likely, but it’s also not a scenario that would surprise me if it does happen.

If they called up Gwynn
I doubt they’d call up Stocker – those two would have pretty much the same role. Interesting that only two of the eight on the list have not seen time in the majors.
There might be room for five more players, but they’d have to already be on the 40-man roster. Assuming Capuano is sent to the 60-day DL to make room for Gamel, then there aren’t any open spots. They’d either have to call up (or waive off the 40-man) Richie Gardner, Luis Pena, Hernan Iribarren, Lou Palmisano, or Alcides Escobar. They’ve already got a third catcher (plus Palmisano hasn’t caught this year due to surgery) and there wouldn’t seem to be much point to having Escobar back up Hardy at short (since Counsell already does that) and not pinch-running (since that’s presumably Gwynn’s job).

Waiving Richie Gardner really isn't a problem
He’s been terrible, and if they were still interested in a guy like him, he’d be on the above list of players getting called up.

I suppose
But if they do put call someone up for him, it seems weird that they’d pretty much fill up the roster (by doing the Gamel for Capuano, Phineas Q. Minorleaguer for Gardner thing) on Sept. 1. I’m probably making too big a deal out of it, but wouldn’t it be nice to have the flexibility to add someone (be it minor leaguer or outside acquisiton) later on? Then again, I suppose the worst-case scenario is losing Hernan Iribarren once Gardner is gone so I am overthinking things.

Baumann's question below reminded me
Gallardo could also be shifted to create an extra spot.

Personally,
and it isn’t a knock on Rottino who I really like for that versatility and Racine connection, but Salome would have been a fun 3rd catcher(as if we use two to begin with).
Hope Escobar gets a call as well. Going to be fun seeing some of these guys back up and seeing hefty lefty get his first crack at the show :D

these guys should be thankful for the hurricane
if they were playing another few days, the callups would probably not have come until after their season was over.
and…thank goodness they didn’t make the playoffs!
Also, cheese.

I don’t like crappy minor-league pitchers being involved in a playoff run in September.

What did DiFelice do to you?
I know you’re not confusing him with Mike the catcher, you’ve been around here too long for that….
(Another friend of mine thinks he looks just like this German actor in a soap she’s addicted to; do you have problems with German soaps?)

Why not Randy Choate?
He’s a lefty, at least. Is he still hurt or is he just repeatedly getting shelled?
by Rendezvous on Aug 30, 2008 1:50 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Neither.
He’s just not very good. And he’s not on the 40-man roster.

i have been away for a while.
maybe i have missed something important. why is Gallardo not on these lists? he’s on the 40-man, or does he not count because he’s still on the DL? (is he on the 15- or 60-day DL?) have we just decided that it’s too late for him to ‘gain strength’ and be valuable out of the ’pen for a playoff run?

This is a list of players on the 40-man that are getting called up when the big league roster expands on 9/1
Gallardo is on the 25-man roster, but is on the 15-day DL. He could be shifted to the 60-day DL to create an extra 40-man roster spot if the Brewers wanted to call up another non-40-man player, like Angel Salome or Chris Narveson, for example.

As for Gallardo's injury status
Just because he isn’t being activated now doesn’t mean he still can’t contribute later in the month. He can also still be used in the playoffs even if he doesn’t come back by the end of the regular season.

any updates
has he been throwing at all? Obviously if he comes back he would be in the pen since he won’t be able to stretch out in time to be a starter.

The last I heard
he threw off of a mound when they were in LA, didn’t “pitch” but just threw from the mound.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)

thanks.
how does it work in the playoffs? 25-man roster, i assume, but what if someone gets hurt — can they trade that person out for someone on the 40-man?
also, if it is the case that Yo isn’t ready in September, what are the chances they’d add him to playoff roster ‘cold’? i would think they would have to be pretty low.
