Game Thread #113: Brewers (62-50) at Reds (51-61)
Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds, Aug 4, 2008 6:10 PM CDT
I was at the Nats-Reds game in Washington yesterday, watching the Reds get swept. If you think the Cubs made us look bad last week, imagine what it's like to watch a team go down in three straight to Washington.
Tonight's matchup is Bronson Arroyo and Manny Parra. Arroyo hasn't been good this year, but he did beat the Brewers twice in the last two months of the 2007 season. Parra has scuffled a bit lately; let's hope he's due for a good one. I hear about the Reds offense all the time, but it sure didn't show up in DC yesterday afternoon.
Game time is 6:10 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Jeff
How did you like the new Nats stadium? My brother-in-law just moved to DC, so we may be visiting in the near future.
eh
I had heard really bad things, and that’s too extreme. It’s nice-looking, it’s new, it’s open-I think that’s the best thing, it isn’t this imposing edifice, not in any way. The weird thing is that there’s all this planned developed-condos, bars, shopping, etc, and it’s all opening next year. There’s nothing right now. Eventually the block around the ballpark might feel a bit (just a bit, since it’s artificial) like Wrigleyville or the area around Fenway …now it feels more like a giant minor league park. (Which isn’t entirely a bad thing.)
Also, cheese.

I just spent the last three nights at Nationals Park
If you do go, I recommend getting a Ben’s Chili Bowl Half Smoke. One of the best things about the park is how they’ve incorporated local restaurants for ballpark food. The seating is generally pretty good, with some good views of the Anacostia River and the Capitol dome, depending on where you are. The scoreboard is nice, the President’s Race is pretty fun (although I’d imagine Brewers fans would find it pretty derivative). It reminds me a lot of Turner Field in Atlanta.
The surrounding area used to be very scary, but it’s getting more and more developed by the day. There’s still a lot of construction and not a ton to do in the immediate vicinity, but you can see where they’re going with it, and it will eventually be pretty nice. You should definitely go for a game, if you have the chance.
Nationals Park
The park is very open with great sightlines – I’ve been to a couple games (Brewers Memorial Day game among others) and it is a very nice place to see a game. It will be nice if the cherry trees in the outfield time their blooming for opening day in the future – that will give it a nice look.
You are right about development still being on going around the stadium, it will probably be a few years before everything fills out.

Didn't we play a horrible series.....
......against the Reds around this time last year? Does anyone remember/ I think there was a rain delay.
Arroyo's hair gives me a bad feeling.
"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"
What is more ridiculous?
Craig Counsell batting sixth, playing third, or Jolbert Cabrera batting sixth, playing right field?
Dude, Cabrera might be the worst hitter in either lineup, and I’m counting the pitchers.
Also, cheese.
Jolbert Cabrera
What’s with all the guys who’ve been out of the majors for a couple seasons making it back onto rosters lately? Valerio de los Santos, Jolbert Cabrera, Vladimir Nunez, who else?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
The Reds have Mike Lincoln, who was out of baseball for two years
And, before he went on the season-ending DL, Kent Mercker. And let’s not forget the feel good story himself, Josh Hamilton. Well, that was last year, but I’d certainly rather have Jolbert manning centerfield than the Natural.
sigh…
Miss you, Josh.
Lineup For Tonight
2B Rickie Weeks
SS J.J. Hardy
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
RF Corey Hart
3B Craig Counsell
CF Mike Cameron
C Jason Kendall
LHP Manny Parra
I’m a bit disappointed to not see Billy in the lineup tonight even though he is 8 for 29 (0.276 avg) for the season against them and has pretty much owned them throughout his career. Hopefully Old Craig can do something for us tonight!
Arroyo
On pace for a 180 pitch perfect game.

If you ask me, its good to have a tight strike zone when the Brewers are playing someone like Arroyo. If he gets low and away stuff, he’ll beat it to death.
I think this guy likes batters, I wouldn't expect many close backward K's.
"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"
HD
Cubs on ESPN in HD.
But I just wanted to say, FSN.. convert mid season instead of 09 for all HD games. We have to wait till the 16th for the next HD game. That’s unacceptable!
PS – I hate SD now that I have an HD TV.
For once?

He’s having issues tonight. First he says Brandon Phillips is going to be a free agent after this season. Wrong. Then he says Rickie Weeks’ OBP has been in the .310’s all season. All season must now mean a few weeks.

has anyone else become a biggebit more tolerant of tom hardicourt lately?
i feel like lately he has been a lot more honest about his stuff… and not afraid to call people out.

TRUE.
but i think he has gotten more honest as the season has gone on. i know the tone is almost snobby and angry sometimes; definitely sarcastic; but i appreciate his honesty.
in an almost unrelated note; talked to DARON SUTTON the other night by the diamondbacks bus here in LA after a game; and it was great to see him. he chatted with me for a minute and i told him that i miss him in milwaukee. he seemed to be genuinely touched and said “thank you. milwaukee has the best fans in baseball.” i told him i still have my buckethead brigade shirt.

oh crap
i look away 5-10 minutes….
maybe ned is doing the same, because why else is Parra still in there?
When would they have pulled him?
After the first hit of the game? After the first walk? After the second walk, the pitcher was up. You can say they should’ve pulled him after Arroyo got a hit, but that means they would have needed to fire up the bullpen almost right after the first walk of the inning (third baserunner allowed by Parra all game). After he got Keppinger out, he was facing another lefty, so it’d be strange to bring in a righty from the bullpen.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Yeah, it's not like he was throwing a no-hitter or somethin'
It was just a run of opportune plate appearances for the Reds. Sometimes they come all in a row.
Parra was just one pitch away from getting out of the inning

Single and walk in a row
when Parra has pitched 4+ innings (or 3 2/3+) innings, he’s nearing the end of his safe zone.
I would think it best to have someone in the pen after 2 runners on. A walk and a double later, he gets pulled.
Given when ned DID go out there, I probably would have pulled him before the one that was the last batter of the inning. So, in other words, if I took over management duties after ol’ Neddie came out the first time, the inning may still be going on. So, I suck:P

because we just need 1 more run with a 5% probability, rather than kapler and have like a 15% probability of at least 1 run.

Reds' FSN had it
Prince shoved Parra twice, once in the face after they were arguing
Saw it on the MLB.tv feed
The Reds broadcast had it live—Parra and Fielder walking down the dugout side by side, obviously disgruntled with each other. Parra said something, whipped his jacket (I think?) in Prince’s direction, Prince flipped out and shoved him right onto the bench hard, then a bunch of dudes stepped in between to break it up.
Manny probably swiped his tofu slim jim

I think this team is all scared shitless of Fielder.

Not to mention he can’t play his position worth squat. Look at that replay of Gallardo getting hurt.

He was only a stopgap catcher until Soto caught on. I don’t remember if he was traded to the Cubs before or after Zambrano and Barrett had their little dustup and Barrett was sent away.
After
They sent Barrett to San Diego for Rob Bowen and someone. Bowen and Koyie Hill didn’t hit (surprise) for a month, so they traded for Kendall.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Trying not to read too much into this.
I’ve suspected for a while now that the dedication to Weeks might have as much to do with Fielder’s friendship (and personal volatility) as it does with any real hope that Weeks himself will fulfill his perceived promise. The fight, and the aftermath in which Fielder sought out Weeks, adds to that suspicion. Then again, this is the second year in a row that a move was made in the 2nd half that diminished Weeks’ role, if only temporarily. So I’m probably just impatient and overly cynical.

I don't understand
You mean Weeks gets playing time because Yost is afraid of Fielderr??? Seems like kind of a ridiculous theory if you ask me.

Afraid is a strong word...
... and not one I used. But there’s a certain logic in a desire to keep your tempermental HR champion happy, and if that means having a little more patience with a struggling 2nd basemen you think might still develop, so be it. Am I wrong? Probably. Ridiculous? Not really. It’s certainly happened in professional sports before (see Winters, Frank, former Packer center, or Pederson, Doug, long time backup Packer QB despite a near total lack of ability to play at the professional level).

More probable
The fact that Durham and Counsell are worse than Weeks.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
by SRB on Aug 4, 2008 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Worse how?
I might give you Durham defensively, but aside from power there is nothing that Weeks offers that Counsell hasn’t done better all year. Given the power in the rest of the lineup, I don’t think you can justify forgoing Counsell’s superior defense with Weeks’ 9HRs. Does that mean Counsell should be playing regularly in Weeks’s place? That depends on whether the guy calling the shots has real hope for Weeks finally developing into the player he was supposed to be. If the guy calling the shots thinks there is still hope of development and thinks the playoff chase doesn’t justify playing the older, more consistent player, then so be it. If it’s a close call, is it so hard to believe that a guy like Yost would let personality politics influence him? I don’t see how you can say that.
Again, that doesn’t mean I’m right. I don’t know if I am or not. I just threw it out there because it was something I had thought about on a few occasions.

Video of the fight...
I had to splice two parts together, so you’ll see it stutter for a second and repeat. OOps.
Yost in the post game
Said something like “its rude to go knock on your neighbor’s door if you hear them arguing and this is like that.”
Its rude to ask about players fighting – sure Ned.
What a weird, terrible analogy.
Weird because all he had to say was “it’s an internal thing”, terrible because if you hear (not to mention see) your neighbors hitting each other, the matter escalates to the public realm.
In short, I don’t like Ned.
Well...
... he did say arguing, instead of neighbors hitting each other. That’s intellectually dishonest since Fielder and Parra didn’t just have a verbal disagreement, but intellectual dishonesty is almost an art form with Ned in post game interviews and thus not all that surprising here. We should probably be grateful he didn’t just say “What fight? I didn’t see any fight. Never happened.” And then after they showed him the video “That’s clearly been doctored.”
As an aside, I like Fielder a lot better when he looks like he’s going to tear Tony Larussa’s face off instead of Manny Parra’s.

Hardricourt was just on SportsCenter via phone
Said that the hearsay was Parra was heading up the tunnel to the clubhouse after getting pulled, Fielder didn’t like that he gave up 6 runs and wasn’t sticking around to watch.
Dubious
That doesn’t sound believable at all, more likely Parra said something.
