Game Thread #115: Brewers (63-51) at Reds (52-62)
Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds, Aug 6, 2008 11:35 AM CDT
For all the hoopla over Homer Bailey in the years since the Reds took him in the first round, he hasn't been worth much more to Cinci this year than Mark Rogers has been to the Brewers. Kind of odd that, despite all that hype, Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez (who, to be fair, wasn't in the org until this season) have completely overtaken him.
So yeah, Bailey is 0-5 with a 7.55 ERA this year. He was solid in Triple-A, but has walked guys like crazy everywhere he's been. Going for us this afternoon is Jeff Suppan, who has also been walking more batters than usual, but at least has an ERA under 5, and is coming off his second best start of the year.
Game time is 11:35 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Bill Castro is already doing his part for the Brewers in 2009
From McCalvy’s game preview:
“Brewers bullpen coach Bill Castro, who will serve as the pitching coach for the Dominican Republic in next year’s World Baseball Classic, spent time Tuesday lobbying Reds closer Francisco Cordero to pitch in the tournament. Young Reds hurlers Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez also have tentatively agreed to pitch.”

A thought
I wonder if the Moustache has checked with Thompson about a trade for Favre in exchange for Mota. Would seem to solve both teams problems and heck, Favre might have a nice fastball!!!
The Bambi's Bombers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
Expect a trade today or tomorrow.
Why aren’t the Dolphins asking about him?

Counsell starting two days in a row?

He put the ball in play 4 times.

Nice play by Rickie
Usually that sort of ball toward him would’ve scored the guy from second.

Whatever.......
.....if we can’t score one run against this guy we have more to worry about then a loss.

A TheJay question
What is the record for consecutive outs/assists by a fielder to start a game.
I'm not sure
A couple catchers have had nine putouts to start a game due to strikeouts and pop-ups.

Bruce/ Votto comparison was the stupidest thing I've ever seen
The only thing their swings have in common are that they are both lefties. Bruce has a high leg kick, while Votto swing is much longer.
Wonder if Prince
is making sure Suppan is watching between innings because he and the boys have to watch Suppan’s crap

displaced aggression
since Fielder picked on Manny, now it’s manny’s turn to pick on someone else further down the pecking order. So, I guess that’s Manny’s job now.

It's a tight competition for the batting clown
Cameron-.231
Weeks-.230
Hall-.229
But Kendall is still lapping the field with an eye adjusted .243 BA.
Sure am glad
we got Counsell’s bat in there today in place of JJ. No need to let JJ continue to work out of his funk after a better day yesterday. Ned is a genius, we are so lucky to have him on our side along with math.

Late to the party today
Sorry, I got hung up … so, yeah, Weeks sucks! Fire Yost! The team is collapsing after the dugout fracas! What? Oops, thought I was on commenting on the Brewers blog at JSOnline.
4-for-4 Rickie is fun, except when he hits it so hard Kendall can’t score from second with 2 outs.

Too obscene
I wanted to borrow from the old Dave Chapelle line: “Sorry, I’m late kids. Santa got hung up with some pussy in Vegas.” Thought that might be of questionable taste for the board, but it’s too late for that now, isn’t it?
Anyway, uh, I wasn’t in Vegas this morning, and I’ll leave it at that. Much less interesting start to the day than is worth sharing.

Life in the Queen City
I don’t get how people live there. Every shot of a game in Cincinnati – especially day games – always looks like the people there are sweating and suffering more than if they were hanging out south of hell in August.
Is the chili really that spectacular?
Use the brown eye, ump!
Wow, that looks pretty good
Good go for some of that. Also, that has to be the most shallow bowl chili has ever been served in. OK, maybe it is worth it for the chili.

It’s served on plates. Comes as 3 alarm or 4 alarm et cetera. I forget what they mean exactly but its a reference to addition of items. One of them is raw onions and I’m always for raw onions.
Cincinnati is a nice place. It has some extreme politics that were surprising to me. Sort of Midwestern flavor mixed with the South.
Again, more positives
I stand corrected. I would put raw onions on Cap’n Crunch. Can’t get enough of that stuff.
Not sure about the extreme politics.
Hey, Cameron!

The chili is much thicker than typical chili as the meat is finely ground
And it comes in a 3-way : Spaghetti, Chili, Cheese
4-way: A 3-way with either beans or onions
5-way: everything.
Or you can get a Coney which is a hot dog with chili and cheese (onions and mustard optional).
And the humidity can be a bitch in Cincinnati, but I once spent a summer in Atlanta and I’ll take Cincinnati’s summer every time over that steam bath.
Bend over and drop your pants, Mr. Babar.
Hot-'lanta
I’ve been in Atlanta twice, both times in late August. That was pretty rough. I remember asking a local how they handle 96 degrees with humidity all the time, and his response, “This is actually one of the cooler days!”
Man, that chili sounds delicious. Might have to make a Brewers road trip next year and get some of that.

Almost a record
The 11 assists by Rickie Weeks was one away from the ML record of 12 in a nine inning game.
IIRC
Juan Samuel shares that record. He would have broken it, except he booted what would have been the record breaker and didn’t get another chance.

4-2 this month...
... meaning the Brewers need to go 13-8 the rest of the month to hit the 17 win plateau and put themselves in a position to hit 90 wins by playing just over .500 ball (13-12) in September.

not that it matters much
but 26 games in september, not 25. given the schedule, i’ll take 13-13 out of that month…though i’d be much happier with 13-13 if we win those 17+ games you mention in august.
