Game Thread #146: Reds (66-79) at Brewers (82-63)
Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers, Sep 10, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
Call me a wild-eyed optimist, but I see one clear silver lining in all of this: At least we're not losing to the Pirates.
Today's matchup is Bronson Arroyo and CC Sabathia.
Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Lineup
Durham & Counsell in against the righty, Kapler starts for Hart. Following Brandon Phillips’ injury last night, Andy Phillips starts at second base for the first time in his major league career. No doubt he’ll still put Weeks to shame.

So...
How will the team manage to disappoint while scoring one run in the first today?

Someone
will have to try to talk you off the ledge-r.
:D
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
SBNation
If you look at the SB Nation standings on the BCB front page, you’ll see the Cubs and Cardinals are riding a 0-game losing streak.

My hand has been hurting lately
from pounding it on tables, walls, pets, whatever is around when the Brewers are playing
Hah
My hand actually hurts for the same reason, but it was from me karate chopping my computer’s AC adapter because it’s malfunctioning.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
I wonder if the dugout cams have an indicator when they are live
Valentin and Cy Ramirez staring down the cam
Maybe Battlekow broke it.

Nice play by Sabathia getting the lead runner?
I’m stuck with Gameday today.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
now that CC doesn’t have to worry about the no-hitter today, maybe he can relax and start getting them reds out
I wasn't able to see it
But based on what it sounded like on the radio, Cameron saved a run there with the threat of his throw.
Powell was making it sound like they held the runner because Cameron looked like he was going to gun him down.

You forgot about CC
The normal rules of Brewers suckiness don’t apply to him.
by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 10, 2008 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Ohh i heard he threw it into the crowd from a buddy on AIM
can’t ever rely on reports from friends from outside class
Crap, we already cashed in our dramatic home run token last night
We also lost the Branyan game too. So much for momentum.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Time to scratch out a 4-3 lead
So the Reds can come back and win 5-4 again.

Rajai Davis
Did you realize that when he homered the other day, that was the fourth time this year he’s entered a game as a pinch runner and later gotten a hit in that game? Does that seem like a lot to you?
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
no
not if you’re talking about hits from the communal clubhouse bong
by PagsBrewCrew on Sep 10, 2008 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions
Next pitcher to lose to a sub-.500 team has to drink the bong water
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
unforunately
that’s lining up to be CC. I don’t want him out for the next week from “a stomach ailment”
by PagsBrewCrew on Sep 10, 2008 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah
But he also enters games as a pinch-runner a heck of a lot (27 times now I think). Combine that with the fact he’s pinch-run for their DH fairly often, so they don’t have take him out after he’s done on the bases and he doesn’t lack for opportunities.

gah
I log into brewcrewball with the score 1-0 brewers
by the time I read the comments 3-1 bad guys.
I guess i’m cursed today.
so, I’ll go away for about 30 minutes…hopefully that’ll help
Let's stick Sabathia in at cleanup for the rest of the season.
He can’t be that much worse defensively at first than Fielder, right?
If by natural you mean "actually able to catch Rickie Weeks' and Bill Hall's errant throws", then yes
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
And a nice play by Edwin Encarnacion
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Encarnacion and the whole world
knows Hardy will pull everything and will NEVER bunt. Make the 3B job easier. Hardy now 1 for 12 for the series. It’s not easy being predictable and successful.
by heybatterbatter on Sep 10, 2008 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Um, okay
It would’ve been funny if Encarnacion was playing Hardy to bunt with the bases loaded. Even if he was playing him to pull, it still took a nice stop to start the DP.

With a little luck, JJ can become the fifth player this year to have 3 GIDP in one game

Ha
Brewerfan post about Coffey:
“Now that we’ve got Coffey, Ned’s gonna want to use him like 8 times per game”
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
I think we're gonna see a lot more stolen base attempts
Because Coffey makes you have to go.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Oooh, I can make the joke worse
Alcides Escobar is gonna be pinch running for a lot of those steal attempts, because Coffey makes your vowels move.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
urgh
what happened there?
there was an injury delay this last half inning too.
by PagsBrewCrew on Sep 10, 2008 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions
Something with CC's left hand
Yost and the trainer went and checked it out for a few seconds. Powell’s guessing the beginnings of a blister.
by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 10, 2008 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Kapler threw to the plate
Messed up something in his arm. Last inning, CC tried to barehand a ball again so they went out to look at it and deemed him okay.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Now that we've gotten rid of nyx and kapler's injured
that leaves us with Tony Gwynn Jr as our primary backup? urgh.

CC at 113 pitches
I wonder if Ned will let him bat if his spot comes up.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
yes please
but lift him if he allows a runner
by PagsBrewCrew on Sep 10, 2008 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd let him bat and then sub in a new pitcher anyway
Sabathia has the only RBI and only XBH today.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
I don't really know your bench
But surely Sabathia’s the best offensive option available.

He's not de jure, but since Yost would just use Counsell, he is de facto
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
craig counsell needs to play every game like it was game 7 of the world series. if he did that, he’d be in the hall of fame…
or as if the bases were loaded
he’s hitting like .850 (plus at least one SacFly) with bases loaded this season
by PagsBrewCrew on Sep 10, 2008 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions
His career OPS with the bases loaded is 1.012!
good for a .417 batting average.
by MillerParkSouth on Sep 10, 2008 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah
The grounder would’ve moved Cameron to third, but Nelson’s flyout should’ve ended the inning, so Cameron would’ve have scored without the error.

Should be, "would not have scored without the error"

do that 3 more times and we'll have a run!
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
I'l take a single
I was expected a GIDP there, even though he was leading off.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
He'd have to line a ball off the pitcher's forehead, have it carom high into the air, and then bounce over the wall and into the stands after he's already rounded second

One time Ben Sheets came up in the third with 2 outs
Jim was talking about the 3-bagger in the third promotion. He said that the only way Sheets was getting a triple was if multiple players were unconscious on the field.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Wait, I take it back
That’s contingent on him actually hitting a line drive, and therefore impossible.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
DON"T SEND THE RUNNERS
We can’t be having a triple play here
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
K and a DP

Tony Gwynn up
At least he’s fast enough that a double play would be hard to turn.

Now he's gonna spit you and ground into a triple play

You have no concept
He hits into DPs. He’s just a dp-er.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Is Hart unavailable?
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
It's his OFF DAY
You can’t put a player in to play on his Yost-prescribed OFF DAY. Doing so would threaten the entire OFF DAY plan for everyone else.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
I think he's jinxing us again
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
