I believe Hardy and Hart started the trend, although Corey shaved his off when he started losing his status as Corey the Hitman Hart. Kendall has gone between goatee and full beard, Sheets went mountain man, Fielder has some scruff, and now Sabathia and Suppan are getting in the mix. The trend is growing, but why should it stop with the players?
Playoff beards are a part of sports. It’s a sign of dedication and solidarity. Growing a beard is basically a teamwork exercise. The thing is, it’s much easier and much cooler than going to a ropes course. Hockey players have been doing it forever… and it even after forever, it hasn’t gotten old. And who can forget Jesus Damon breaking the curse? Simply put, growing a beard in an effort to accomplish a goal will never go out of style.
The point is, no matter what way you look at it, superstitiously growing a beard is badass. I would like to propose to you, Brewer fan, a way to take this trend to the next step. As the Brewers lead the wild card race with less than a month left in the season, I vote that us fans follow suit and band together by growing our own manly, September face-tufts.
