Trade ideas?
Do any of you guys think the Brewers would consider trading J. J. Hardy, knowing that Escobar is right around the corner, or is the plan for him to move to second? With a still young talented shortstop I think the Brewers could get some good value for him. A thirdbasemen and a closer? And another thing what is up with Tony Gywnn Jr. is he somewhat good or did people just hype him up, because of the name? His defense is good, but is his hitting just not big league caliber?

now do you really want to trade hardy?
do you really want to trade one of your best offensive threats for a guy who has not been proven? how about Rikkie Weeks? DO NOT TRADE HARDY

Except that he is not that great offensively.
Unless you count that he is “the best fast-ball hitter on the team.” I just have to chuckle whenever anybody says that.
"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"
Not that great offensively?
Gold glove-caliber defense, coupled with a .280 hitter capable of hitting 25HR a year? What more do you want?
chuckle all you want...
but he’s the third best offensive shortstop in the league, and he’s spent most of the season right on Jose Reyes’s heels. (Well, not literally—that’s the one department in which Reyes has the clear advantage.)
Also, cheese.

both those things have been discussed quite a bit
If it were done by vote, the plurality, at least those expressing opinions, would trade Hardy as he is quite valuable and get rid of Gwynn as he is viewed as not valuable.
I suspect that Melvin would trade any player if the offer were right.
Hardy to third?
Since I think most would agree that Gamel won’t be a 3rd Basemen due to his defense, would the Brewers consider moving him to third. He certainly would have the arm strength to pull it off, and with Escobar to his side I think we’d have an awfully nice left side of the infield. Then we could put Gamel over at 1st in AAA and trade Prince after next season.
You want TG Jr?
You can have him. enjoy him. He’s a great pinch runner and pinch bunter
I just sit back and root for the taser
Keep Hardy AND Escobar
Play Escobar at SS, and move JJ to 3B. I still love the idea of Hardy at third base, because he has such a quality arm it’d be sad to move it to second. But at the same time, JJ’s defense would be very very good at second I feel than a move to third. Then again, defensively, you gaining a ton when you replace anyone over Weeks I feel.
I say, if the opportunity presents itself where you can get a big name off one of the two, then perhaps look into it. But look more for dealing Weeks and TGJ.
neither of them have trade value at this point ..
trade fielder this offseason, try and center it around matt cain or similar. move hardy to third and escobar comes up to play SS. yes im taking a risk by assuming gamel will be productive at the plate, but i think it will be more than worth it if we can get prince out of here before he goes way downhill (its already started). a rotation of gallardo, cain, (insert free agent 3rd starter), parra, and suppan would sound mighty lovely to me.

I don't think Gallardo and Cain are going to get you guys in the playoffs next year.
The offensive machine rolls in Texas.
Rickie's D
What do you mean by “anyone”?
Consider Rickie this year by several different defensive measures:
25 RAR / 104 Rate2 (Davenport Translations)
.810 RZR (12th in majors)
.814 ZR (8th in majors)
5.08 RF (8th in majors)
he’s not great, and he has trouble with that double play pivot, but he makes up for it with range and a bit more sure handedness on other plays. i think he’s about league average defensively now.
that sounds about right
problem is that when he boots one, it seems like it is a high pressure situation
Keep Hardy
JJ Hardy is a great defensive player and a decent hitter. However, the best part about him is his marketing value. How many girls come out to the ballpark every Friday night to see JJ play? He pays for his own value in ticket and jersey shirt sales.
Escobar will be the shortstop next year (if not at the beginning, then by the all star break). Hardy will take over 2nd or 3rd depending on who we trade away. I’m guessing we’ll trade Weeks before Hall because It would be easier to dump his potential than Hall’s 8 million dollar contract.
serial lol
He pays for his own value in ticket and jersey shirt sales.
i don’t think so.
as much as i like Rickie (he still leads the team by far on Pitches Per Plate Appearance!), i don’t think we can trade on potential anymore. with that in mind, the fact that he still has some pop and wears down opposing pitchers AND is actually playing average D (see my comment above), i think 2B is less of a priority than 3B and the pitching staff. Hardy’s a good defensive 3B candidate, though his offensive value slips a bit there. it’s the best in-house solution to shift him there and start Escobar at SS right away.
people are talking about Hank Blalock, no? i’m not sure he’d be any better than Hardy at the plate (he had two great years, two awful ones, and now two injured ones), and he’s atrocious in the field. i say we concentrate on pitching.
Bill Hall is a sunk cost. eat it.
who needs a 1B/DH and/or SS the most?
the Rays have a lot of pitching and sort of have a need at SS, and probably one at DH, too. what could we get from them?
the Giants and Matt Cain have been mentioned.
the Blue Jays need some pop for sure and could use either of those positions, we’ve dealt with them before, and they have a lot of pitching. i’d love to nab David Purcey as a quasi-throw-in.
what if the Angels can’t get Teixeira back? they have some pitching.
I think the Rays would rather wing it at shortstop until their number pick is ready.
I think they would rather trade for someone that they can hold on for a long time.
The offensive machine rolls in Texas.
that may be true,
but obviously the AL East is by far the toughest division in baseball. i mean, its worst team probably could have won the NL West this year. if they want to contend for the next two years while waiting for Tim Beckham to get ready, why not plug in a player like Hardy who will only be making about $4mil next year? he won’t break the bank, keeps the spot warm for Becks, and might net them a nice draft pick when they let him walk after 2010.
do contenders in the toughest division really want to “wing it” at a premium position?
He was thinking of Beckham, I think
I assume you know this and are just using a coincidence to make the point.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
I know he meant Beckham
He said “wing it at shortstop until [Beckham] is ready.”
Playing Brignac at short until/if Beckham is ready doesn’t really count as winging it. Brignac is a fine prospect, if not a world-beater.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
