This is silly
I don’t think Yost is a great manager, but someone needs to tell me how you blame the manager when basically the entire middle of your lineup completely stops hitting over a 3 week stretch.
Seriously. Ha, ha…some Brewer fans hate Yost…we get it. But what the heck would you have done to make Braun, Fielder, Hart, Hall, etc. hit their weight?
The Cubs have been crap the last few weeks too…must be Lou’s fault.
There are some good baseball fans on this site, and I look forward to reading their insight, but sometimes teams lose and it has nothing to do with the coach and it gets tiresome hearing the whining about Yost without any real analysis about how exactly he blew this game or that game.
How about rather than sucumbing to the easy exuse, we get some real analysis? My guess is that there is no real analysis beyond, “They ain’t hittin”, which makes the tired old standby complaints all that can really be used.
As I said, it is too easy and I find it below the level of BLOGGING I see on this site.
Rant over.
In all seriousness
Hitting wasn’t why you guys lost this one. Utley gave you a free out by bunting. Yost proceeded to bring in a lefty to walk Howard and face Burrell and Victorino, which was why you lost the game. Your manager did not put you in the best position to win the ballgame, simple as that.
In all not so seriousness: Ned Yost and the Brewers bullpen: Your 2008 Chicago Cubs MVPs.
Tell me who has
stepped to plate in the last six weeks and earned his keep?
This is a total meltdown. Save the occasional good start. (Sheets, Bush, and Sabathia)

Blaming manager for losing doesn't equal thinking manager is stupid
Shouse vs. Righties: .588 OPS
Shouse vs. Lefties: .834 OPS
Burell career .944 OPS against righties, .821 against lefties
Howard career .770 vs. lefties.
Ned may not have cost the Brewers this game, but he didn’t put them in a position to win.
Ah, heck, yup, he costed them this game, plain and simple.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Wrong
Who exactly is he supposed to put in the game? We have four batters coming up…one is lefty, two are switch hitters, so there is no real option in terms of L/R (the two switch hitters have very little platoon splits).
The bullpen was fried from the day before, so no Villanueva. Mota pitched. Riske has been horrible and is allegedly hurt. They have another game tonight so you don’t want to pitch Torres for 2 innings.
Shouse is really the best guy they had…..unless you think they should have gone with Gagne?
I will say this…if Riske pitches, fans bitch (“he sucks”).
If Gagne pitches, Yost gets blamed ("How many times do we have to see him fail late?)
If they bring in DiFelice, Yost gets railed (“How do you put a career minor leaguer in that situation?”)
If they pitch to Howad and he comes up big, Yost gets hammered (“Howard has big power vs. lefties and has been red hot, how do you pitch to him and not set up the DP against a much lesser hitter who is prone to DPs”?)
It is just hindsight managing….pure and simple. The reality is that their are no easy answers in the pen right now, and the Phillies are a very hard team to match up with in the middle of the order.
Bottom line is that many fans on here will simply blame the manager purely based on what happens, and not based on the options available.

dude has done innumerable stupid things this year
He’s the leader of the team as well. You sound like you are fond of him.
Nope
I just think that the serious fans should be above much of the baseless discussion that is all too common when it comes to Yost.
I don’t agree with everything he does. I don’t think there is any manager who can go 162 without lots of little things that can be disputed.
I am going to bow out now because I know this isn’t a discussion that is going to go anywhere. People have their minds made up, which is fine. I am looking for a different type of discussion, and I realize that isn’t going to happen with frustrations high.
by badgermaniac on Sep 14, 2008 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions
you've got your mind made up
You’re obviously a Yost fan. Saying that things like starting Rickie Weeks every damn day is a “little thing.”
Maybe he’ll get an extension and you can have the last laugh.
Hey Ned:
The fact that you disagree with the arguments made in criticism of Yost for today’s game doesn’t mean the people who are making them aren’t “serious” fans. On the other hand, the fact that you’re too narrow minded to consider the possibility that you’re wrong is completely in line with your management style.
Kudos.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Hindsight managing
My comment when they walked Howard
I would’ve let my guy that dominates lefties face the guy that sucks against lefties (some Philly fans think he should be platooned). After the walk, any righty in the pen would be a better option than Shouse, who sucks against righties. This includes Torres.
Do you think it was a good decision to let Shouse face Burrell and then the string of righties/switch hitters?
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
I can guarantee you..
…that if he brings in say DiFelice after pitching yesterday, and with his limited history, and he gets bombed, this board would be on fire calling for his head.
FWIW, Shouse has an OPS of .746 against righties.
Gagne, the most logical righty choice, is at .982 against righties.
But sure, any righty would have been a better option.
by badgermaniac on Sep 14, 2008 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions
1. You’re ignoring the fact that Howard is bad against lefties and Burrell hits lefties better than righties.
2. Using this year’s splits for Shouse is silly when you can use his career splits. I agree that Gagne sucks. DiFelice or Dillard would’ve been fine with me. I’d have been thrilled to see Torres come in. Gagne is the most logical righty choice? I disagree.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
One more point
why was Villy unavailable? Ned threw him for 3 innings yesterday when he could’ve used Clung or DiFelice.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Is it Neds fault that the middle of the order isn’t hitting? No.
But today is another example of exactly the big gaping hole in Neds managing. 1 on 2 outs, and a righty on the mound. Who’s your #1 choice to PH for Bush. TGJ? Nelson, Lamb and Gamel. 3 PH Lefties on the bench.
Then later, we have Shouse (A Loogy) going against a switch hitter in Victorino, who promptly gives up the 3R HR.
Those are two just simple examples of Ned not putting the team in the best position to win. And that’s his job, to put the team in the best possible position to win. And he failed again. I’m not saying we would have won minus Ned, but we would have been in a better situation to potentially do something.
Victorino his L/R pretty equally
Leaving your reliver with the lowest ERA (and I realize that he isn’t a great reliever regardless) in that situation vs. what……Gagne? Dillard? DiFelice?
Remember that at that pont they were already down as well.
I wasn’t thrilled with Gwynn (heck, I am NEVER thrilled with Gwynn no matter what the case), but seriously, what are the chances that Nelson or Lamb or Gamel go deep?
I would not have hit Gwynn there, but that is a minor speck on the windshield.
by badgermaniac on Sep 14, 2008 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions
you're wrong
but you obviously aren’t going to let it go.
And the condition of the bullpen today is due to its usage yesterday and through the season for that matter.
?????
Please don’t tell me you wanted him to leave Parra out there?
When your starter can’t; get out of the second inning, I hate to break it to you but your bullpen will be taxed.
1. His bullpen choices yesterday kept them in the game. What did they give up…2 or 3 hits in like 7 innings?
2. He used guys like Dillard, DiFelice, Coffey, and McClung….guys who presumably aren’t needed in a close game.
3. Their bullpen is the most rested pen in the NL.
Your post is EXAMPLE 1-A as to what I am talking about.
by badgermaniac on Sep 14, 2008 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions
??????????
I wouldn’t have minded if Parra was left out there, but putting that aside, he used DiFelice for what an inning? McClung for what an inning? Maybe one of them got two?
Your comment is typical rubbish. Last year people like you defended his use of the bullpen like a cretin and Ned himself admitted that he didn’t do it well after the year was over.
Actually I think hanging Parra out to dry would have been the best move in the short term...
… though probably not good for Parra’s psyche, which frankly seems a little delicate.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 14, 2008 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Minor speck? 1 On, No Outs. We don’t need a slap hitting leftie to do what he does best (Line Outs), we need someone with some power to maybe get a deep double, a HR to potential send the go ahead runner in. Once again, I’m not saying that it would have changed the game in our Favor, but it puts us in a position to potentially do something instead of sending up some crap hitter who shouldn’t be batting.
Back to Shouse. Victorino bats for about the same average. But he’s .120 OPS better vs. a LEftie. And Shouse is .274 points WORSE OPS vs. RHB. Put those together, that’s a good .394 OPS swing in Phillies favor. I know our bullpen is a mess, and Gagne has pitched worth shit. But Ned once again failed to understand the concept of a Loogy.
Six years of "minor specks"
Is that what is going on? Delusional.

If only there were a site dedicated to analysis of Yost's nincompoopery
Then there would be something like 2 years of archived postings containing some analysis of Yost’s managing. It probably wouldn’t always be right, or even serious, but there would be a record to point to.
I suppose it’s easier to hack at strawmen than to consider that the manager is a buffoon, though.

I can't believe this thread
Yost fucking sucks, period. After, what, six years this hasn’t sunk in?
He pulls out all the stops today and moves Hart up and Braun/Fielder down in the lineup. Big fucking deal.
Tell me, why isn’t Sabathia pitching every THIRD day? Too drastic for this team. Something bad might happen, right?

Fun prediction
Yost finds something to get worked up about in tonight’s game, and gets tossed to “fire up the team.”
by Marty McSuperFly on Sep 14, 2008 4:17 PM CDT reply actions
Fire Yost
No, actually set him on fire.
Agree on the prediction of getting tossed. Maybe he’ll try to hit Howard for being too good.
Now if he really wants to shake things up, start Gamel.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
perhaps to shake things up
Prince, CC, and Nelson should roast him on a spit over a fire, I’d enjoy that

Gamel
The team OPS is .679 over the last 14 days. Gamel’s MLE OPS this season is .761. Counsell and Hall are both in the .600s… I’m certainly ready to grasp at straws.
So you're calling for a

One positive
We’re weeding out hard-core bandwagoners I think. Now we’re just down to the people who care (not at BCB specifically, just in general). I’m all for bandwagon fans becoming die-hard fans, but I hate when they think they know everything.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
it's also football season
There’s always been a contingent of fans that give up on their baseball watching the moment Week 1 of the NFL rolls around. I think that Brewers fandom will be down to the core that was there early in the season really soon—even if the Brewers do win the wild card.
Don't count me in on the bandwagners
This series was a given disaster. I can only take so much losing and dedication.

He clearly believes the mythology
I’m sure it’s nice for the pitchers to work with Kendall, but this “he calls a great game” crap has gone too far. There are 3 options on the bench, and Kendall never leaves the game.

You all realize we are still leading the wild card race?
From the looks of this thread you’d think we were out of it. Yes, obviously the Brewers have been struggling of late, and Yost has been making some rather shady decisions. However, with a win tonight we’re back to having a two game lead in the Wild Card, worst case we’re tied for the lead. So back off the ledge, crack open a cold one and enjoy an exciting race.

Still Leading, but...
I have never ben to the point with one of my sports teams (packers brewers badgers bucks etc…) where i would watch a game expecting them to lose, but that is what happened today. I watch the brewers now and KNOW they are going to lose. August was one of the most enjoyable months of my life (they were almost unstoppable), but this is just getting out of hand. We are what, 1 game up? It feels like we are 0-149.
I am all for shaking things up a litle bit. All we have gotten from 3rd base lately is shoddy defensive play or shoddy offensive play, or both at the same time. Why not throw Gamel in for a game? Switch up the order some more, do SOMETHING.
And as much as i like Corey Hart, I think his comments about booing in Milwaukee were out of line. What are we, 6-14 in our last 20 home games or something horrible like that?

you can only BS for so long and Melvin got him to sign Suppan to a fat contract
A question
Yes Ned needs to go that is without question
But does Melvin have to shoulder some of this blame?
I mean he did put this team together he signed Gagne and Riskie etc
is he in any danger of losing his job here when Ned goes to the under the bus
If Loving CC is wrong I do not want to be right
Tough one
He looked pretty good when he turned Richie Sexson into about 28 different players, but he has been kinda shady when it comes to getting the team what it needs to get over the hump. That being said, I don’t hold the moves against him. Riske looked good when we got him, Gagne was a little suspect, but otherwise, I’m not ready to send him packing.
probably not much but maybe

except that CC can go every three games with every one else rotating around him. There are only 14 games or so remaining.

I really don't give a crap whose posting here now
and I’m sure the Big 4 (and jihad) don’t care either.
Just posting for the hell of it. This is NOT life…..

Oddly,
the Brewers are playing now like they were when they were no-hit in Detroit ages ago and like the Bosox series. After those events, the power switch was flipped on and the pitchers relaxed.
Can it happen again?

Yost needs to shake them up.. At least that's what I think I want.
Though rather than putting McClung back in the rotation and using some of the call-ups, Ned’s shake up would likely involve moving Kendall to clean-up. You know, so he gets more ABs.
So it's MY fault
because I didn’t say it sooner? Is THAT what you’re saying…?! (big smile)

To add insult to injury, I hear the Big Z is working on something special in Milwaukee.
(You know, like McClung did for 2 innings tonight, but more so.)
Where I get lost
I understand the pro-Yost argument of “well, he didn’t give up the bases-loaded walk” etc. etc.
BUT
if we go through another playoff-missing collapse this season, making it 2 in a row, do you just throw up your hands and say “hey, Ned isn’t responsible for execution, that’s all on the players”? Is it just a coincidence that the team falls apart late? (I’m not sure about this season, but “falling apart late” not only refers to “late in the season,” but last year it was also “late in the game.”)
I guess I struggle with what Ned is actually responsible for.

Agreed
I wonder how often a team has blown a 90+ percent playoff chance 2 years in a row. It’s not over yet, of course, I really wouldn’t be shocked if they got in, but…

You know
Not that I expect Moustache to do it, but consider:
- Off day tomorrow, before starting what is now the biggest stretch of the season.
- A team that is absolutely reeling, showing very little life on offense or defense, getting shut down by pitchers on 3-days rest
- A situation where the bench coach is (presumably) more baseball-saavy than the head coach
Really, it’s a perfect set up for a Yost firing, moving Simmons in as head coach. You can wait until the offseason, but unless you think Yosty can turn this slide around, and all signs point to NO, why not do it now? Moustache, you’ve made some gutsy calls before - it’s time to make another one tonight.

Well, he is responsible for what pitchers get used when
I’m with the FireNedYost guys and their “Shouse Tracker” concept being a tipoff to correct bullpen management.
Ned isn’t directly responsible for guys sucking, but his judgement on when they start to suck is a wee bit dodgy.
The manager's jobs include
1) Filling out lineup cards
2) Bullpen management
3) Motivation…
At the moment, it is hard to see that any of those jobs are being done WELL.
It shouldn’t be hard for these guys to stay motivated right now, so I am happy to hang that on the players. However the Pitching/bullpen management has been dire and the choice of lineups moreso.
Depends on why you think the team
even bothers to have a manager in the first place. Managers have to produce at managing, don’t they? I don’t see a lot of lame-brain second-guessing here over the months and years. I think those of us who hang out here regularly are pretty damn good at spotting Yost’s gaffes. They cost this team games some times. But the bigger question is: What does the manager do when practically the whole team seems to have lost its wits, as this team has done. Yost needs to pull something out of his ass now. That’s what he’s getting paid for. Anyone can “stick with his players.” Sorry, but that’s the coward’s approach.
(I’m a former mid-level administrator and have the bumps to prove it. The owner and GM need to have a sit-down with Yost tomorrow, imo.)

**sigh**
I want the Cubs to win, but I could do without this

Hey, the game's over
95 pitch complete game for Myers. I hold the staff as well as the players accountable for the pathetic lack of patience in this series.
