90 win season rotation option
It will take seven wins in the next twelve to get to the ninety win threshold, something that seemed almost guaranteed on August 1st. Assuming that to be a laudable goal for a season that is unraveling a little later than usual, what kind of pitching rotation would be the best option?
Can we get more out of CC and Sheets rather than using them with four days rest, as was Yost's routine ? Starting CC and Sheets in games 1 and 2 is already going to happen, but they should be starting games 5 and 6, as well as 9 and 10 and CC for the final regular season game. That's seven games with the best chance to get to 90 wins. Whadya think?

4 Man Rotation
I’d try and eliminate Bush and Soup from the island, BIG time. They have just been too consistently inconsistent all year. Though, one is capable as a work horse with a nicer post season resume.
I’d try and make it a 4 man rotation:
CC
Sheeter
Man-ram
Soup

Parra?
He’s been awful over the last month. Melvin & Co. completely disregarded the conventional wisdom of upping a pitcher’s yearly inning totals in increments of 30IP and now his arm is shot. He can still touch 95, but his command is a joke right now. If it weren’t so damn close to the end of the season, I’d say sit him for a turn in the rotation and hope he comes back stronger. Hell, I’d still do that – see if you can get him some rest before we hit the playoffs.
Conversely, Bush has been great with the exception of his Sep 3rd start – I’m not sure where you’re getting this “inconsistently consistent” nonsense from.

I totally agree
that Parra has been mishandled – for the reason you give. Ditto on Bush. He survived the Yosting re “shared” start duty with McClung.
Maybe use Parra to start the first playoff game (god willing) and keep him on a very short leash.
Maybe.

Actually
Parra right now is only 27 innings beyond what he threw last year.

Maybe it's not an "innings pitched" issue
but my eyes tell me there is an unresolved issue with the guy (who I hope will spend a successful career with the Brewers).
The guy is not fooling dozens of batters for the past six weeks, give or take. This does not seem to be a “luck” or “slump” condition.

27 innings?
That would be the equivalent of three more complete games or maybe four more “quality” starts. Who knows how much is too much? The manager and coach are monitoring that and apparently they think Parra has pitched just the right number of innings. Which get us back to…management. (Another thread, to be sure.)

I don't think that's true
gameday will show his pitches and their location

Parra and Soup
would be my choice. We know McClung can start, right?

Further, I would be using
Torres much more frequently. He never misses an opportunity to tell interviewers that he is at his best when used often. He says his pitches break more effectively with more frequent use. Seems to me it’s now time to move him to another role, say, “prime reliever after seven innings”

Didn't Dillard start for most of the season
in the minors?

Not this year
He used to be a full-time starter but he spent part of last year and all of this year in the bullpen.

Thanks
Good to know. But it seems like we’re at “grasping at straws” time now. Maybe the rotation would feel better if it was CC, Sheets, Bush and Flip ACoin.
McClung and Dillard and Villanueva are capable of five good innings on the front end of any game, imo.

Suppan is capable of five good innings, as well
On the other hand, Suppan, McClung and Villanueva are also all quite capable of giving up four or more runs in five innings.
Dillard hasn’t gone beyond 3 1/3 IP in an outing for Nashville or Milwaukee all season, so expecting him to give you five innings is a stretch. We’ve seen Villanueva as a starter this year, and it wasn’t pretty. Add in the fact he’s not stretched out to go more than three innings or so and it’s tough to justify putting him out there. McClung presents the same problem, having not thrown more than two innings in an appearance for nearly two months. Could they go five good innings? It’s possible, but I wouldn’t count on it.
I guess you could argue they should make it a “bullpen game,” and give each guy a couple innings but that really limits your bullpen options for the games before and after that one, even if each guy throws flawlessly.

Yes, and
we are at the close of a season (feels that way) and a committee start is not such a bad idea, given the weak hand the team is currently holding. Except for our two Aces, the rest of the rotation is maybe a Jack and two trays. Discard the two trays and….
Game 4 – McClung, Villanueva, and Mota
Game 8 – McClung, Villanueva and Mota
With the total number of arms in the pen, it’s hard to argue for being conservative in their use.
With Bush starting games 3, 7 and 11.
Save Suppan and Parra to “heal” before the playoffs.

Now, THIS is what we need -
more out of the box thinking here!
It’s crunch time for a rotor or gear or something.

Eliminating Bush and keeping Parra is the height of ignorance.

Excellent
We seem to be consensing here that Soup and Parra should to go “on leave” until at least the regular season is over. Any dissenting opinions?
Anyone know how we can get our missive to Dale Swami?
