Yost Fired!

JS Blog link
ESPN.com blurb with the reaction of an anonymous player
Tom H believes this came from Mark Attanasio

Joe Sheehan thinks
"short of replacing him with Dakota Fanning or something, the Brewers will be better off for his absence."
Melvin won't discuss whether the firing was mandated by Attanasio
and says Ted Simmons hasn't decided to accept a reassignment to an advisory role.
Mike Bauman of MLB.com thinks firing Yost won't fix the team.
Tom H: Ned Yost didn't see it coming.

My dad called me with the news from the Miller Park press box (he's covering the Cubs-Astros game for STATS). He relayed the message that Dale Sveum has been named the interim manager, but I haven't seen that in the media. EDIT: ol Pete notes the official site confirms.

I'm sure the various mods (I'm looking at you, battlekow!) will be on top of posting any relevant links as they come up. FNY, you succeeded!

[UPDATE: www.firedalesveum.com is still available, for the entrpreneurial BCB readers.  Sveumed! --- roguejim]

to leverage a better position out of Staples. The Yost branch will not be closing down after all, and all the Brewers will keep their jobs.

(Seriously, I hope this is the shot in the arm your team needs. I really do want to see you make the playoffs).

by tcyoung on Sep 15, 2008 2:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

A very timely move. And bold.

No reason why not. CC and Durham were attained so the team could make the playoffs, not stay home in October.

And, maybe this will be like the Mets and Willie Randolph—-light a fire under the team’s ass.

This is a gutsy move

I don’t know if the manager has much to do about most of the slump… but maybe the only way to get everyone out of the slump… and piss them off and get the bats going!

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

by Kyguy922 on Sep 15, 2008 2:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He does to an extent.

When its one player slumping, no. When its the entire team slumping during the last month of a pennant race, there’s problems.

Manager can bench underperformers, light a fire under the players’ asses (figuratively), etc.

Wow

I’m stunned. I concur with others that this is a very bold move, especially considering all Doug has stuck with Ned through. I think it’s pretty clear that the team needs an attitude adjustment. Could that happen under Yost? Every passing day that it didn’t made it all the more unlikely that it ever would. Will this help? I don’t know if there’s enough time left, but hopefully the team can regroup enough to mount a final stand.

What, do you all have Commodore 64s?
Firing probably came from the top
By Tom Haudricourt
Monday, Sep 15 2008, 02:26 PM

It’s difficult to believe general manager Doug Melvin, who is not a reactionary or knee-jerk person, made the decision to fire manager Ned Yost with 12 games to go and the Brewers tied for the NL wild card lead.

This had to come from the top, from owner Mark Attanasio, for Yost to be fired. With the team collapsing at the end for the second consecutive season, losing 11 of 14 games in September, obviously a “now or never” decision was made for the club.

CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets are going to be lost to free agency after the season, and the Brewers gave up top prospect Matt LaPorta to get Sabathia. So, the team might take a step back for a year or so after this.

Thus, win now or maybe never get this close again. That’s why I think it came from the top. I can’t imagine Doug Melvin firing his manager with 12 games to go.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

Sheets is the key IMO

I still think Sheets needs to win the rest of his starts. If we assume CC wins the rest of his Sheets can take the burden off the 3-5 starters. he is an ace and has to pitch like one.

by Kyguy922 on Sep 15, 2008 2:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

in baseball, maybe...

in hockey, Lou Lamiorello (sp?) of the New Jersey Devils is notorious for late season firings. He did it a couple of years ago (maybe 2005?) with like a week to go in teh season, and the Devils in 1st place, and installed himself behind teh bench. He did it before, too, in 1999, with two weeks to go in the regular season, he fired his coach, and the new guy won the Stanley Cup.

My fave late season firing, though, has to be of Michigan basketball coach Bill Freider back in 1989. After teh regular season ended, Freider went and talked to Arizona State and agreed to be their head cocah, and Bo Schembechler, the old football coach, and then Athletic Director, went off, saying “A Michigan Man wil coach Michigan,” and fired Freider.

And Steve Fisher got the task of leading the maize and blue into the NCAA Tournament, and 6 games into his head coaching career, Fisher was cutting down the nets in Seattle….of course, then came the Fab 5, and the events leading to the probation that’s killed Michigan basketball over the past ten years, but we’ll always have that 1989 National Championship….

by ahtrap on Sep 15, 2008 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm still stunned

I wonder what the latest point in a season has been for a playoff-contender to have fired the head coach.

I think he needs a break

He has pitched more innings already this year than he has ever pitched in a year before. If he is going to be any use in the playoffs I believe they need to shut him down for a start or two to rest his arm. It would probably be beneficial for our playoff chances because he would get some rest and wouldn’t be out there getting lit up due to fatigue. Let McClung get some starts, he for sure couldn’t produce anything worse.

Perhaps the Brewers wanted Yost gone either way

And if somehow they rebounded and made the playoffs, they didn’t want to be stuck with Yost because they couldn’t fire the manager that made the playoffs for the first time since 82 and maybe he would get some votes for manager of the year.

This way, it takes Yost out of the picture…

The anonymous Brewer in the ESPN story is Cameron.

Pretty obvious. That ESPN.com writer, Amy Nelson, has only done one Brewers feature all year … and it was about Mike Cameron’s comeback.

(“I think we have sucked in September so far,” a Brewers player who wished to remain anonymous told ESPN.com’s Amy K. Nelson. “And I don’t think it’s his fault that we can’t hit or pitch right now, but something had to change.”)

Joe Sheehan’s take:

Yost elected to walk Howard to face Pat Burrell. This was… well, it strains my vocabulary to find the right word for it. Howard cannot hit left-handers, and would be a platoon player if performance mattered anywhere near as much as reputation does. Or if he had a competent manager. Howard is at .228/.313/.458 against lefties in his career, .212/.287/.410 this year. Howard. Can’t. Hit. Lefties. Shouse, on the other hand, is in the major leagues for exactly one reason: lefties can’t hit him, to the tune of .175/.192/.289 this year, and .211/.263/.325 for his career, which includes a bunch of years when he was barely a major leaguer. Manuel sending Howard up against Shouse was a continuation of a theme for the Phillies: not hitting for Howard when he has little chance of doing something good. He was giving Yost an out, and Yost gave it right back.

That set up Shouse versus Pat Burrell, which cried out for a right-handed reliever. After all, Shouse is a pure specialist (.307/.390/.455 vs. RHB career; .293/.371/.446 this year). The only way walking Howard even might make sense is if Yost were to bring in a righty to try and get a double play out of Burrell. Burrell doesn’t have the big platoon splits he showed earlier in his career—he’s a dangerous hitter against both kinds of hurlers—but leaving Shouse in to face him was asking for trouble.

Think about this for a second. Yost had a 481 OPS pitcher facing a 697 OPS hitter. He elected to issue an intentional walk in that situation to allow an 817 OPS pitcher to face a 905 OPS hitter with an additional runner on base. That’s when you start looking around the roof of the stadium for snipers, because gunpoint is the only place where that kind of decision makes sense.

No, the players didn’t play well in Philadelphia, but Ned Yost gift-wrapped that first game, a game the Brewers could well have won with some better decisionmaking. He earned his firing, and short of replacing him with Dakota Fanning or something, the Brewers will be better off for his absence.

I think this decision to fire Yost was in the cards

maybe late last week already. Melvin asked to wait until Monday to do the deed for the public, what with the off day and the team traveling.

Hard to believe that Yost’s unbelievable call to walk Howard was coup de grace. Are we saying, if Shouse had wiggled out of the inning, Yost would still be in the dugout tomorrow?

I am AA right now, and my goal is not really get myself to the big leagues next year or the year after. I am in my eleventh year, and I am satisfied with getting players ready either for AAA or the big leagues. The talent has come through, and we have a lot of former players in the big leagues, and if something opened up in Milwaukee, yeah, I would be interested. But that isn’t my goal. My goal is to make these players better. I am not like, “Man, this is July of ’08. I have to be in the big leagues next year.” You know, I am 61, and in ten years I will be 71, and will I be doing this? I don’t think so. But you go out there until they don’t want you anymore or maybe you don’t want to do it anymore, I mean physically can’t do it anymore. If something worked out, would I be up for it? Yeah, but it isn’t my number-one goal. My number-one goal is to do the best I can and make these guys better.

The Capital Times compares this with the Buck Rodgers/Harvey Kuenn situation.

The big difference then was that the Brewers players openly disliked Rodgers and there were those who thought they were underperforming just to get rid of him. Reportedly, when general manager Harry Dalton informed the players of the change, he said: “You got what you wanted, now go out there and win it.” Or words to that effect.

I guess that quote applies to us instead of the players this time. So let’s go out and blog!

Haha

Nothing wrong with being a comma fiend, but it’s mostly a matter of taste. Standardization is only useful as far as it facilitates communication. In this case, the “comma before ‘too’” thing is like split infinitives and not ending a sentence in a preposition, to me; they’re rules that let allow people to feel educated and by extension superior, but really do nothing to enhance readability.

Perhaps.

I’ve never been real big on “rules of writing” for classes. If you are writing something, I think that if you use the grammar/sentence structure how you like it, it creates a more personable effect in the work that you are writing and makes it less mechanic. I guess the only time writing rules should be completely followed is when writing a research paper or something similar.

Interesting.

I’ve got 8 classes a day with one of them being a study hall. We can go on senior release during Study Hall, though, which basically means all the seniors can leave the school for that 44 minute time slot. Fortunately I live in town and can drive home, eat lunch, and have enough time to peruse BCB before heading back.

Bye Ned!

Juniors get one term/ one block per year (so 15/16 potential classes when there’s 4 a day) and seniors get two (14/16 total classes). I can drive home for lunch, too, when I don’t go out somewhere.

That sounds funny

3rd block is 3 45 minute chunks, you get 1 for lunch and you have a class for the other two.

Another question

if the Brewers fail to go over .500 in their remaining games of the season (despite not having Ned in place), is it fair to say that Yost got Yosted?

Because replacing him now vs later wouldn’t have made a shit bit of difference in that case.

by PagsBrewCrew on Sep 15, 2008 3:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The Brewsome Twosome with more:

Here’s what Melvin said about why the decision was made with 12 games to go in the season: “We were just trying to do something to see if we can get something going in these last 12 games. We want to get (the players) motivated to go out and win this thing. I can’t say there was one deciding factor.

Melvin said the decision to fire Yost was a collaboration between he and Attanasio, which was discussed last night. He also said he wouldn’t discuss whether or not the move was forced by Attanasio or not.

”Mark and I talked last night and we slept on it," Melvin said. “We made the final call this morning. I’m not going to get into (if Attanasio spearheaded the move). Any major decision, Mark is involved and in the end I make the final call.”“It could be construed that way (as panic), but we are 16 games over .500 and are tied for the wild card,” Melvin said. “It could be viewed that way. In the end we hope the message to the players is that we think we can turn it around.

”Ned gave us 95% of the schedule with a chance to (make the playoffs). We’ll leave it up to Dale to see if he can figure it out the rest of the way. Ned admitted he didn’t know why this is happening. I don’t think he was totally shocked.

“That’s the part that’s difficult for me. Ned’s never quit on me, never quit on his players, never quit on his coaches. I feel like I’m quitting a little bit on Ned by not giving him a chance (to finish the season) but he said he understands.”

The decision to remove Yost also was a move to remove Ted Simmons from his post as bench coach. The team offered him another spot in the organization as an advisor (a non-uniformed role) but Simmons has not given an answer yet.

for a day. If Sveum takes the team to the playoffs, he’s got the bounce into next year’s marketing campaign for ticket sales.

This calculus probably had more to do with his decision than the issues we saw with Yost as manager. This guy is not a gazillionaire because he falls victim to his emotions (as you, and certainly I, do).

See below.

Also, I thought it was a good point – no matter how well you coach some players, they won’t play well unless they try their absolute hardest. That said, Ned probably could’ve used more things to motivate the boys. However, I agree with Brauny that the players are to blame in the end.

"Yost has to take a big part of the blame as well, after making some of the worst tactical decisions you’ll see. In the eighth inning of yesterday’s first game, the Brewers were tied 3-3. Guillermo Mota allowed a leadoff single to Jayson Werth, and was lifted for Brian Shouse so that Shouse could face Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. (Charlie Manuel’s refusal to always put a right-handed batter between those two is a big reason why the Phillies will have trouble winning a short series.) Utley sacrificed Werth to second, setting up Shouse versus Howard.

That’s when you start looking around the roof of the stadium for snipers, because gunpoint is the only place where that kind of decision makes sense."

Corey Hart and his .312 OBP (!!!) lead off yesterday. That’s Corey PATTERSON esque. He’s been playing Jason Fucking Kendall all season long and leaving him in to bat in the ninth innings of close games. He’s kept going to Gagne. He hasn’t bothered using Torres in non-save situations, ignoring the whole ‘one must have a lead to protect it’ corollary. He’s kept Hart batting in front of Cameron. He’s destroyed Manny Parra’s arm. He’s kept Jeff Suppan—a certified junkballer (!!!)—in the rotation. He hits and runs.

Anyone against this move is an idiot.

It means he’ll be around for 9 games, then leave to spend more time with his family.

I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Free at last

Thank you Phillies- those were the most productive 4 losses ever. Don’t let the door hit you Nascar Ned.

The benefits of squatting on an obvious domain name

I’ve enjoyed all the mentions of the site today, though. We’re going out in style….almost 10,000 hits already today.

Marty, So this is the real question

Do you plan on following Yost to his next endeavor to maintain the site, or is FNY.com going into retirement? If retirement is the call, I’m sure you could pull a Favre if the situation arises, but what the hell are you going to do with all your free time?

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

Not sure

I didn’t actually register the domain name. The site was registered and is hosted on the account of a friend of mine. I’m pretty sure we’ll just shut it down, and let his next victims carry the torch. Or maybe leave it as it is, so we can go back and reminisce. I guess I’ll go back to writing fan posts on BCB, which is what I was doing before they all developed an anti-Yost theme.

There’s plenty to dislike in Melvin, but he may not be a problem following the season, either.

Entreprenurial Opportunity

Go here and offer them the domain for a fee. Or, maybe they’d prefer “donthireyost.com”.

I don’t know if there are any SB nation blogs dealing with Dale Jr., you could offer it to them for fans of his pit crew. I love the line “he’ll inevitably leave the tires on too long”.

The press conference thread

is open.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
