The Yosted! Press Conference
Hey, did you hear? Ned Yost was fired.
At 6:30 Central time (in about 5 minutes), they'll be having a press conference to fill in the blanks. The thread is open!
[Note by battlekow, 09/15/08 11:01 PM CDT ] Over at Bernie's Crew, akittell has, amazingly, transcribed the entire press conference.

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
Yost was in a no-win situation with some of his players, according to Hardy.
“Whatever he did, some of the players were looking at him too much,” Hardy said. “If he was quiet and in the corner, they thought, ‘Maybe he’s nervous and he doesn’t want to say anything.’ If he was snapping his fingers and talking, it was like, ’He’s nervous because he’s snapping his fingers.‘
"Whatever he did, I feel like a lot of players were thinking that way, that it was a nervous reaction. I honestly think he did a lot better this year than last year, but it got to the point with some players that they weren’t even looking for the good.”

he had that one comment about JJ - his hitting maybe?
Where he answered what he was doing and he said “nothing.” For a guy who does gymnastics to avoid saying anything negative, that’s pretty negative.
So what do you think?
They started kicking the idea around in earnest after the Mets sweep, fired Kremblas, had Yount meet them in Philadelphia, and after the latest sweep to the Phils, the decision was made last night?
I wonder how much pressure was put to bear on Moustache by Mark A to fire Yost? I’m sure there was some, but I wonder how much Melvin had to fight, or how much he agrees/disagrees with the decision. I have a hard time thinking DM would be ok with firing the managers with 12 games to go on his own.

Based on body language at the presser... I think Doug resisted a lot.
Either that or he thinks the move is a bad one that will impact his ability to hire Ned’s replacement in November.

I wonder too
I mean, no one likes having to fire someone. I assumed DM was so distraught because he likes Yost personally. I’m not sure if that means he couldn’t come up with the decision to fire him as well, though.

Yup, I agree
I think Mark A was kinda waiting for this. He’s not one to make a rash decision based on a few weeks. He probably was really close to firing him back after the Red Sox sweep.

I guess it's worth mentioning
Nedgar was one of Moustache’s first hires in October 2002 (IIRC). Although Mark clearly feels comfortable with Moustache when he bought the team in January 2005, I don’t think I ever saw much rapport between Mark A. and Yost (arguably the organization’s most visible presence in the media).
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Agreed.
There was an interview early last year where Attanasio told a reporter that he asked Ned why he gave a player a day off, and his description of Ned’s response was pretty dismissive. He followed that up with a grin, but not a happy one. At least it seemed that way to me.

Ok
I think that Ned and Doug—especially Doug—were great for this franchise when they got here. What I mean is, we were a very very sucky team. Doug and Ned really did get this team respectable. However, the two are/were not the types of people who could put a team over the top. Melvin made a respectable team in Texas, but could not push them over the hump either. Ned couldn’t make in game decisions, and Doug really is just terrible at signing/trading for big name players. The only big name player WE recieved that worked out, if I remember well enough, has been Sabathia. Suppan, Gagne, etc…have been mostly busts. I suppose you could make a case for Cameron being a good pick-up, though in my regards I don’t think he was at all what we needed this season other than the defense, which has been below what I expected from him.
I think this team needs a proven GM and Manager who have shown that they can push a team to/above expectations. (Obviously thats what any team wants, but still.)
Wait, what?
I am extraordinarily anti-Suppan. And Gagne. I am anti-gagne, too.
Carlos Lee was a +,
and rumor has it Mark A. was the one to favor signing Gagne, because he liked him from his time in L.A.
Ah, I did forget about Carlos Lee.
The point still stands, though, that Carlos Lee didn’t get us anywhere.
Wait, what?
I am extraordinarily anti-Suppan. And Gagne. I am anti-gagne, too.
I've wondered about that too
I really hadn’t complained too much about Nedgar until I started having higher expectations for the team.
For Doug, I’m a long ways away from writing him off. In a sense, firing Ned is a win-win for him. If we make the playoffs, he’ll be considered a genius. If not, though, it’s hard to make the argument that Ned would have turned the team around with more snarling.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I don't know.
I just really don’t feel that Doug is the kind of guy to get it done overall. He couldn’t get the Rangers over the hump, he hasn’t been able to get the Brewers over the hump. His bad free agent signings in both, where he paid way too much: Gagne, A-rod, Suppan. I’m not saying any GM is perfect, but for us the 52 million we could have saved off Gagne and Suppan could have been put to much better use.
Wait, what?
I am extraordinarily anti-Suppan. And Gagne. I am anti-gagne, too.
Hmmm
I don’t buy it when people defended (paste tense yay) Yost by saying that every manager makes mistakes. On the other hand, I think there are a ton of GMs worse than Melvin. The only move I’d really be in favor of is promoting Zdrndszick to GM. If there’s an appreciable upgrade, I’d be fine with it, but I’m not in favor of firing DM as of right now.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Indeed. I don't really know if I would fire him.
Mostly because of the lack of really good GM’s out there. Just saying that he doesn’t have a good history so far of getting over the top.
I dunno if Z-dude-rienick would be a good GM or not. He is a great scout and drafter, that’s for sure. Would that play out well as GM? I admit I don’t have knowledge in that area.
Wait, what?
I am extraordinarily anti-Suppan. And Gagne. I am anti-gagne, too.
A good point on Jack Z.
Running a scouting department and the draft is different than being a GM, though obviously there are transferable skills. Could he prioritize as needed to fill out the roster with a limited budget? Could he identify where the team could get by with a little less offensive production at a position in exchange for defensive performance? Answering those questions appears to be significantly different than coming up with a list of talented players you want exclusive rights to.
That said, if Doug on a short leash and Jack Z’s exploring his GM’s options, I wouldn’t bitch if they gave Jack a shot.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 15, 2008 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Nor would I.
Though if Doug were fired and Jack were hired, I would certainly not issue a yay or nay vote until after I see how Jack does. I wouldn’t be in favor of it, but I wouldn’t not be in favor of it either.
Bye Ned!
This quote from Hardy really spells it out for me
“This year, I thought he was doing a lot better job of being relaxed,” Hardy said. "I saw it. I don’t know if everybody else saw it, but this is one of the first years I started to understand him.
Hardy has been playing under Yost for I believe 4 seasons and he first started to figure him out now? That to me sounds like he didn’t really connect with his players, and with such a young team I think you need a manager that can connect with his players.
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
4-1 Nats now
Pedro goes 6 innings giving up 8 hits 4 walks and 4 runs. Hopefully the gas is on empty for him the rest of the season. Maybe the Mets can collapse worse than we do.
With Astros going 0/2 versus Cubs
things are in decent shape. It’s hard to not want to jump off of a cliff after a series like yesterday, but we’re still in decent shape here- by far best odds to win wild card yet.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
As of this morning BP wildcard odds
Brewers: 47
Phils: 25
Mets: 14
Astros: 10
I know what you mean there, but we’re really helped by the Phillies and Mets head to head matchups. Now with the Astros 2 back.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
(fragment)
…it’s tough to make up 2 in 12 games.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
But both the Phillies and the Mets have a better chance of making the playoffs
As we need with WC. Anyway, 7-1 Nats now so that is a good start.

OK...
… time to explain things to the math dummies again.
How is it that the Brewers have a 47% chance at the WC and the Phillies have a 25% when they have identical records? Particularly since, in my opinion anyway, the Brewers have the tougher schedule (6 games against winning teams, vs. 3 for the Phillies).
Me no get it.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 15, 2008 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions
It's just the wild card chances
The total playoff chances are: Mets, 80.4; Phillies, 59.3; Brewers, 48.7%.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
bk explains the total playoff chances, but the reasoning for the Wild Card:
The Phillies are 1 (or .5) game back of the Mets now. So, considering that we’re all pretty much tied, lets say that the Brewers go 7-5.
If the Phillies go 8-4, and the Mets go 6-6, we win the wildcard. You can switch that around, too. The Mets could get hot and the Phillies could falter a bit.
Then there’s the Astros. 2 games is a harder deficit to make up than it seems. They’d have to go 9-3 to a Brewers 6-6 or 10-2 for 7-5 Brewers finish. That’s why our wildcard odds are that much higher than the Phillies
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Ok.
Duh. The relatively poor WC odds is function of the fact that if they stay hot there’s a pretty good chance they win the division and not the WC.
Good thing I’ve got you smart guys around to explain the obvious to me.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

That’s actually decent framing for a snapshot. Once the eye finally moves of Sveum, the inverted triangle at the top of the image draws your attention down to Attanasio. The size and proximity to the lens of the three subjects in the photo are in direct relationship to their nearness to the game, the reporters and the fans, but inversely related to their power. Dale’s size (and his expression) conveys his vulnerability instead of his strength, which would normally be demonstrated by his size and proximity to the lens. The inverted triangle is the key to the image.
It’s a nice shot. Too bad the photog didn’t have the depth of field to keep Melvin and Attanasio in focus.

I looked at it as TSSC providing his own interpretation of what the photograph meant would he have taken in, the AP photographer not having the time to set up a shot conforming to that explanation. I figured he just snapped a cool picture and TSSC was retconning the reasoning.
