Game Thread #151: Brewers (83-67) at Cubs (90-58)
Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs, Sep 16, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
I'm ready, and I'm super-psyched!
We've got a new manager, a new lineup, a new fifth starter, and a reason to smile again.
And, dudes, GALLARDO COULD BE BACK THIS WEEKEND. Yes, he'd pitch out of the bullpen, but it's all-caps-worthy nonetheless. Even if all Jimmy Chitwood could do was shoot free throws, coach stays. (Um, hmm, bad analogy.)
Tonight's matchup is CC against Ryan Dempster, two guys in the running for the NL Cy Young Award--and I'm not sure which one is more of a surprise for that honor.
Game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

what's up with the media on melvin
granted i’ve only listened to wssp but cliff (who i can’t stand anyways) feel melvin may be gone and sparky (who i do like) feels melvin won’t be back next year…
personally, i hope he is back next year i don’t know who else they’d hire anyways? jack z?
just curious what everyone else thinks around here?

You know...
If Melvin were let go, that Yost character probably has some time on his hands…

it's ted simmons!
“advisory role”
Doug: So, Ted, you can either take the managing role or become GM next year after I retire.
Ted: GM role
Doug: Good, for now, you’ll be my advisor. Who should I hire as the interim manager?
Ted: We should hire the worst person possible…so I can hire a new one next year…Dale Sveum!
Doug: Genius! Consider it done.

I wonder
what the odds are Simmons ends up as triple a manager? I’m guessing not very good because Kapler has probably already agreed to the position.

Everything about this paragraph is wrong.
All of that, plus Mike Cameron leading off. Sveum just said he wanted some experience in the top spot, so he was willing to ignore Cameron’s high strikeout rate and low on-base percentage. He told the team in a meeting a little while ago that they would be doing more bunting and hit-and-running — “small ball,” if you will — so he probably wants Camerons speed up there, assuming he gets on base.
TH is wrong about Cameron and reasoning for hitting him leadoff, Svueeum has a bad philosophy on “small ball”, and to top it off, there’s an apostrophe error in the last line.
Really, though, I’m excited about this game. It should be really interesting to watch with all the changes, and I buy that things might be a bit more relaxed without Nervous Ned at the helm.
I wonder how long it will take for a writer to refer to this as the “Post-Yost era”.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Tonight's order is sure interesting.
I don’t think Hardy is going to like being dropped in the order again. But with bats in front of him and protection behind him in Hart could prove to be effective. You would think Hart would be better in front of him, getting on base to allow J.J. to see some fastballs that he likes so much. But since Sveum is “one of the best coaches [Yost] has ever seen,” I guess time will only tell. Hopefully the angry drunk side doesn’t come out today.
Forgot to add one thing.
Bat CC cleanup or fifth, shift all the players down, and all the problems will go away.
heh
C.C.? Seeing as he’s >1.000 OPS with bases loaded this season!!!!

I wonder
You assume that, regardless of the multitude of reasons why he SHOULD have been fired, Yost was let go as a last-ditch effort to get into the playoffs.
If that’s the case, then, if any of these took place:
- The Cubs were a .500-ish team or worse
- The Phillies or Mets were a .500-ish team or worse
- The Brewers were 5-6 wins better.
- The Brewers had 10 or so fewer wins
I reckon Yost woud still be the manager.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Hardy's never played third base as a pro
What makes you think he’d be a good option there for the last twelve games? Give him the offseason to work on the position.

Not too bad for a game against the cubs in Wrigley. Then again CC is pitching. Phillies already up 3-0. Mets and Nats scoreless in the 3rd.

Ryan Braun: He loves it.
are you suggesting pinch hitting for kendall?
"Cubs fans boo again – 99% of these people can’t see the plate." -Ueck
that’s an irrational proposition, no manager is going to pinch hit for a position player this early in the game
"Cubs fans boo again – 99% of these people can’t see the plate." -Ueck
then you start rivera instead, not pinch hit in the 6th
"Cubs fans boo again – 99% of these people can’t see the plate." -Ueck
Yeah... i understand the reasoning
But, that might be your best chance to tie the game and you leave an automatic out at the plate.
kendall's not an autoout
but i still think you don’t pull him until his last AB. That wasn’t it.

Yeah..
I just looked at his stats for the last 30 days.
I thought it was a lot worse. it has felt that way.
Lou very stuborn there not pulling Dempster
Trying to get to his spot in the order. With the rosters expanded I can’t think that was a good idea.
still early in the game
i’ll take Kendall’s defense over a pinch hitter for one inning there.
runner on 1st with 1 out, maybe i’d try to avoid the DP, but with 2 out…just leave him in.

Man if we could just win this game
Mets lose, Astros lose, Phillies have 5 outs left. A win here would be HUGE.
Nelson was on-deck to PH for CC
According to Ueck
Interesting tactical decision for Dale...
Do you pinch-hit to start the seventh? If so, who? My vote is for Alcides. My guess is Tony.
It would be nice to be able to pinch-hit here...
without the expected bullpen breakdown.
Wouldn't that hurt?

88 pitches
CC might be able to close this one out if we could get him a lead.
I thought so
He is going for the 4 out save tonight. Howard up as the lead run right now.

Doesn't matter.
There’s no way the Mets are going to hold off the Phillies now. Let the Phillies run the table. The Mets are the team we have to watch.

Aw
I was waiting to see a crafty move: after the Cubs let Dempster warm up, send Vinny Rottino up to bat and when they bring in the righty reliever, put Brad Nelson (or other lefty) in. It’s not like Rottino would play anyway, so you might as well use him as a decoy.
But then they go and let Sabathia hit anyway. Oh well.

Cotts to turn Durham around?
This is a strange move. Will they let him face Braun? That seems just as dumb. Maybe Cotts, Righty for braun lefty for Fielder. Or maybe Marmol for both.
Marshall's their only other lefty, right?

I think so
And that called strike is a pitch CC hasn’t gotten at all tonight.

Durham really isn't that much worse right handed
Cotts is more of a situational guy than Howry too. I really don’t like the way Lou is managing this game.
Of course
Durham will hit into a double play and he’ll be brilliant.

Hey Lou
I’d like this game to be over by midnight
I know
I am just saying though that he has an opportunity to fix that bad play.

Jeeze
Fukudome looks worse at the plate than even the Brewers
My only regret is that I have but one life to give to my blog
