Game Thread #152: Brewers (83-68) at Cubs (91-58)
Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs, Sep 17, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
At some point, don't we get a W just because we're due?
Tonight's pitching matchup is favorable, at least on paper: Sheets goes against Marquis. Benny didn't pitch well in the July massacre, but he has had plenty of success against the Cubs in the last couple years. As for Marquis--Kendall has a .683 OPS against him, which may be bad, but it's better than how he's done this year against the rest of the league.
Game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

It’s embarrassing we have to get excited about one of our everyday players having a .683 OPS in a matchup.
well, it was kind of a joke.
it’s usually a safe bet that I’m somewhere between 30% and 100% smartass. very rarely lower.

Which Corey Hart shows up tonight?
September Hart: .164/.207/.462
Vs.-Marquis Hart: .545/.545/1.636
September Hart, while it sounds like a potential name for a Playmate, is one ugly beast.

My dad (who’s 60), for some reason, loves wearing his in the parking lot at MP. I think it may be because drunk college kids come up and ask him about it.

Drunkenness always brings out the truth: that hanging out with Cubs fans sucks.

No respect!

I would think twice about trading both Prince and JJ even for Lincecum, much less Cain.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
A realistic FA play ...
… might be to go after Derek Lowe instead. Or can we not afford to get into another Suppan-like deal?
Tararreling our way to the finish line.
Suppan is a good pitcher
I think he just forgot the job meant missing bats, Yost had him thinking the goal was to hit the bat with the ball.
My only regret is that I have but one life to give to my blog
by MadJimiBrewha on Sep 17, 2008 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions
Since I was at the game where Suppan gave up 8 runs or whatever in one inning
I have truly disliked him. I wish we could trade him somehow.
Bye Ned!
Reaffirming my thought that Hardy is pretty underrated around the league
I’d make the case that he’s the third or fourth-best offensive shortstop in baseball, and he’s not hurting a team in the field. I’d say he has more value than Jimmy Rollins, with 2 years under team control yet. Would the Phils trade Howard and Rollins for Cain?
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Gammons was just dealing in hypotheticals
But i would agree JJ is underrated around the league.
My only regret is that I have but one life to give to my blog
by MadJimiBrewha on Sep 17, 2008 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
I think JJ has serious trade value this offseason. Good contract situation, coming off a decent year offensively and defensively. If we’re going to flip one position player for a decent arm, it should be Hardy.
Tararreling our way to the finish line.
Stop it. Now.
Hardy needs to be on this team.

I'm just being realistic!
We can’t make another playoff run w/o SOME pitching, and we don’t have the money to buy a great arm in the offseason. So what do we do?
Tararreling our way to the finish line.
I would disagree
I think Fielder has higher value and Hardy’s is lower than it should be. I also think replacing Hardy would be harder than Fielder when taking position and defense into account.
My only regret is that I have but one life to give to my blog

Prince's value coming off this season is crazy low.

I’ve never gotten too mad at Weeks, Hall, Fielder, Hardy, etc. when they were struggling. But Corey is frustrating me like crazy right now.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
You're a better man than I am.
I’ve been cussing out Hall for 2 years, and Weeks for about a year now. Hart’s never had that effect on me until now. The fact that he ran his mouth about the fans for booing him, when he should have been more concerned about looking like something other than a double A ballplayer, put me over the edge.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Are you trying to say that you have an unreasonable dislike of Corey Hart?
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
I'm not sure it's unreasonable, as long as it's temporary.
I dislike Hall more than he deserves. I even mutter about him when he’s hitting. I’m assuming that when (if?) Hart finds his stroke again I’ll forget about the periodic, and downright odd, defensive miscues, and the disaster his September has been.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Coming late to the party
Sutcliffe saying the Mets and the Phillies are better teams than we are. Really? I know they both swept us but are they really that much better? There are four teams in our division above .500 look at the NL east. I’ll take our staff over either of those staffs by far.
Tough to argue with the Phillies at this point, but I'll be damned if the Mets are a better team.
But it’s hard to complain given how badly we’ve played the last 2 weeks, and given the sweeps at the hands of the Cubs, Mets and Phillies in the last 6 weeks.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 17, 2008 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes clearly that is why he thinks that
But really every team plays badly over a stretch and it just sucks that our stretch is now. The Phillies looked terrible a few weeks ago. I am sure nobody would have said they were a better team than us then.

Craig Counsell..
Can we please stop playing him? Could we try to start Gamel? I know it’s a guaranteed error or two, but there may at least be some chance of offensive production.
other than a week or two he's never hit above AA
He wasn’t so great in the last half either. Other than a blowout or pinch hitting I doubt you’ll see him.
Alcides Escobar..
Can we please start playing him? I know its a guarenteed error or two saved, and there may also be some chance of offensive production.
Bye Ned!
I saw Escobar up close at MP, warming up in the Padres series.
And man, he looks like he’s about 16. As good as he may be, it’s hard to imagine him being an MLB player already (or a full-time starter next year).
Tararreling our way to the finish line.
I know I won't.....
But Counsell brings nothing. This needs to be remedied. I guess Hardy will play there next year.
So...wait...
This is weird…a..a lead? This is what that feels like? Surely we must squander it away later, right? Oh dear, oh dear…
Bye Ned!
Any guesses on who the Cubs starters will be for the last 3 games at Miller?
Lilly, Marshall, Marquis?
That seems very possible
I think I lined it up and Zambrano should miss us again. I would expect them to be not stressing their pitchers and maybe giving a position player or two a day off.

give the man the new metallica album
you know, the one with the metal vah-jay-jay on the cover….that ought to take care of it….
not to mention
inflammation of the vulva and a strained cervix
I just sit back and root for the taser
Sheets would leave the game with a paper cut and be out for 6-8 weeks...
…if he played in the world series of poker.
Bye Ned!
apparently he did it while batting

that is always the problem
he should head to the A.L. next year
September 15: Not a bad little Monday
Maybe Arlington is a better destination for Sheets than Houston...
Then Melvin would want to acquire him again. (I never get tired of Melvin loves Rangers jokes)
What kind of person does it make me
being that Corey is my favorite baseball player.(tied with A-Rod)

So Todd Coffey
That’s what it has come to. A man who spent much of the year in AAA for the reds. Fantastic!
and now I go smoke

Tricky Soto
Anyone else notice how Geovany occasionally will, when he’s set up outside on a righty, extend his (left) glove hand to the inside, and tap the glove on the dirt before the pitcher starts his delivery?
It’s just a trick to catch the corner of the hitter’s eye, and make him think Soto is set up inside (when he’s really way out). My question is, since I don’t see other catchers do this, is it considered bush? Middle-infielders feign pickoff plays all the time, but this …
Tararreling our way to the finish line.
Molina does it for the Cards
I think its valuable when there are guys on base who might be signaling to the batter where he is set up. Molina also does the thing where he has the pitcher shake his head even though he’s calling a fastball.
The fake-shake is way more common.
We did that in high-school, even.
Tararreling our way to the finish line.
Can we get a runner in from third
with less than two outs, with out hitting a HR?

I feel like hollering Cameron as loud as I can
Don’t strike out – get the friggin ball out of the infield
Wait....
That actually happens in real baseball. I thought it was a legend from some Caribbean league game.

Tell your mom to finish it
And watch the game.
It's pretty awesome...
My gamecast still shows a full count to Nelson with Kendall on first. I am baffled.
Did we just not score? I have 0-2 to Cameron
This is like groundhog day if he strikes out and then durham pops out. It’s like every freaking time.
Nice call on the groundhogs day

Good for him
I’ve been very frustrated with him but hopefully this can spark something. If he can somehow regain his stroke in the last 10 games or so he can make a difference. But I’m not gonna hold my breath.
Still, a good hit by Corey
