Game Thread #153: Brewers (84-68) at Cubs (91-59)
Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs, Sep 18, 2008 1:20 PM CDT
They beat Sabathia, so we get to beat Harden, right?
Dave Bush has been really, surprisingly, good for the last few months, and lucky for him, if he melts down today, we'll all point the finger at Sveum. He doesn't exactly have a good track record against the Cubs--a 7.63 ERA in his last five starts, two of which were this year. At least he went 6 or more innings four of those five times.
Game time is 1:20 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

No Hart. No Kendall. No problems.
C’mon, Sveum.

According to the JSOnline box score.
Same as yesterday. Pro Hart, Pro Kendall.
Apparently Rivera killed Dales dog as well.
Crazy
Yost refused to put Hart in the lineup forever, and now Dale won’t bench him. That weak-ass attempt at a slide yesterday is enough to put him on the pine. He needs to get his head straight. And against Harden? He’ll be waving at everything.
by Marty McSuperFly on Sep 18, 2008 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions
You didn't drum very loud, apparently.
At some point, Kendall’s legs will be so weak that the weight of his chin-beard will tip him over.

I was busy with something that's confounding me
but I had the radio on and I thought I heard Trenni say that Gamel had an arm or elbow problem before the game and had been sent back to Milwaukee. Like I say, I had split concentration so maybe I got that wrong.
Was just gonna post it
Third baseman Mat Gamel, a September callup considered one of Milwaukee’s top prospects, was sent back to Milwaukee on Wednesday night to see head team physician William Raasch about a sore elbow.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
One last thing we can blame Ned for
Not sure what to do on the bench for the entire game, Mat took his cues from the manager and attempted to lean against a wall for three hours resulting in nerve damage.

shame
As well as Brad “Barrelman” Nelson has favored as our lefty pinch hitter, alongside Lamb, I really wanted to see more of what Gamel’s packing to the show.
Perhaps it’s just a check to see if it’s really his defense or his arm. Though, Sheets and Gamel arm wrestling is genius SghtClueLs!
They were playing paper football
Making those finger-goal posts can put a lot of pressure on your elbows.
If Weeks ever plays again, where will he hit?
Second?
Given that we face all righties through Sunday (that’s as far as the MLB.com probables went, and I’m lazy), it doesn’t seem like Rickie will be playing anytime soon. He’s gonna be well-rested for the Pirates.
Tararreling our way to the finish line.
Wow
If they’re not careful, the Cards might finish the season under .500.

by Marty McSuperFly on Sep 18, 2008 1:00 PM CDT reply actions
I guess Sveum isn't a TGjr fan
Seems like today would be a good day to give him some time – add another lefty against Harden. Despite Tony’s lack of a bat, I’d be surprised if Hart gets a hit today.
I watched ESPN for a lot of the game last night ...
and had a feeling that the broadcast was lacking something. I figured it out today: Chef Jerry Garcia. I’m gonna miss that dude when the season’s over.

Squandered by two embarassing K's
But at least Harden is at almost 40 pitches and throwing like crap.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Why is Hart playing today?
right now he should be doing nothing but bunting he cannot hit the ball to save his life
Counsell is Counsell I sure hope they do not pick up his option
all in all a decent first inning that was a lot of pitchers for Mr Strict Pitch Count

Anyone heard an update on Branyan?
It would be nice to have an actual offensive LH option at third and return Counsell to late inning defensive sub guy.

He has the second-longest active streak of games not walked in

What do you think about this theory
If the Brewers win today, it puts much more pressure on the Mets and Phillies, while they both have their aces going, they might play a little tighter knowing they have to win to stay up on the WC… so one of the two aces will not get the win tonight would be my prediction!
While if the Brewers lost, there would not be any pressure and they both would win… don’t know if scoreboard watching has that much of an effect on teams… but I like to think this way
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
lets get the win and then retroactively analyze
but posting “choke choke” on the mets board might be well timed

the most important thing about winning
would mean we’d escape our matchup with the best team in the NL by taking 2 of 3. Even if the Mets do the same vs. the Nationals, that is ultimately good for us—hanging in until the schedule turns more favorably toward us, so to speak.

you just can’t complain about using your closer in that situation. Philly did that with Lidge on back-to-back days last weekend. Its total nitpicking. Torres is supposed to be the best guy. You use the best guy. You’re basically advocating a “go with the gut” approach. That got the last guy fired, remember?
by James Stanley Cocanower on Sep 18, 2008 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions
no...i'm advocating
warm up the “star reliever” while allowing the pitcher that has thusfar pitched effectively an opportunity to start the next inning with a bit of slack
when the player-to-bat represents the tying run, then you bring in your star reliever (or a situational reliever like a LOOGY as the situation would dictate).
There’s nothing “going with the gut” about expecting that on any given day one of your relievers could be “off.” The only “going with a gut” thing I use is that pitchers that tend to pitch a quick/commanding inning tend to be in good control the rest of the way.
In this situation, I would definitely have Torres warming up in the bullpen slowly…as the threat becomes more imminent, then you have him really get ready.
