Game Thread #154: Brewers (84-69) at Reds (70-82)
Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds, Sep 19, 2008 6:10 PM CDT
Hey, remember when the Reds were supposed to be dangerous in the Central this year? We may be disappointing, but at least we're 13.5 games better than that.
Tonight's matchup is Ramon Ramirez and Jeff Suppan. I'm nervous. Ramirez shut us down in his last start, and Suppan hasn't had a quality start this month. Maybe he's due for one, and Ramirez is due for a major-league shelling.
Game time is 6:10 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

I'm a little confused...
Soup last pitched Sunday night, right? Isn’t that four days’ rest?
by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 19, 2008 6:00 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
hmm, you're right.
updated accordingly. I guess hearing so much about how he was moved up in the rotation, I assumed that meant 3 days, just like it meant for Bush (and will mean for CC.)
thanks.
Also, cheese.

Yesterday was pretty tough to swallow. Not much time left, everything now is a must win.
Go Atlanta… your our only hope.

Wow
Thank goodness the National Anthem was completed, I was afraid they’d have to postpone the game.
Also, is that Jolbert Cabrera batting cleanup? If any red reporters are around, I’d appreciate an explanation, and it had better be in pirate-language.

getting pretty unlikely
When I watch the Reds, I think, why isn’t this team in contention? You really have a lot of nice pieces.
by ol Pete on Sep 19, 2008 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that's what we thought at the beginning of the year
I like our rotation heading into next year though. If Harang approaches his normal stats, he’ll still be our ace. Then Volquez, Arroyo, and Cueto, with someone like Ramirez or Homer Bailey or Micah Owings as the #5. That’s not too shabby.
Our offense can come from Votto, Bruce, Encarnacion (if he’s not traded) and Phillips, and it will be addition by subtraction to not play Corey Patterson and Paul Bako every day. Although I wake up sweating in the middle of the night with the fear that we’ll resign one or both of them.
We’re not there yet, but we oughta be closer than our record suggests.

The Cincinnati fans were stupid for criticizing them constantly
So the fact that the team’s been doing well (and Arizona has gone in a nose dive) has been good fodder for the idiot media personalities. That said, if the team does start winning due to some Ewing Theory phenomenon, I’ll certainly take it. I’m like you guys. I don’t really care who’s on the team, I just want to win.

no possible outfielders in the farm?
You never know who will be floating around as well. Cubs got Edmonds for nothing and the cocky little guy from toronto. Cards got Barton. I guess a lot depends on your GM.
by ol Pete on Sep 19, 2008 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Walt Jocketty is our GM, with Bill Bavasi in some nebulous assistant role
There’s rumblings that we’ll go after Pat Burrell, which would be fine except that he’s basically the same player as Adam Dunn, only older and right-handed. I’ll be pissed about that because we already had Dunn, so why go after an older, more expensive version of him?
Chris Dickerson is our best outfield prospect. He got called up just before September and has been playing well. He wasn’t expected to hit, but he has been. Whether he can do it over a full season remains to be seen. Drew Stubbs (aka the guy we drafted instead of Tim Lincecum) just moved up to AAA. He’s supposed to have Gold Glove level defense, but again hasn’t hit. We’ll see what happens.
There’ll also be the seasonlong hope that Dusty will be Yosted.

Dusty has a three year deal
There’s no way he was going to be fired this year. If we have as crappy a team next year, he might be on the chopping block.

Should be a good year for the Reds next season
Harang/Volquez/Cueto/Owings/Bailey/Arroyo
If any five of them start pitching at what they’re capable of for an extended period of time, that’s probably as good of a rotation as any in the major leagues.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

i'm no troll
i can understand your bitterness though. it really seemed like this would finally be the year the brewers broke through. the young talent would gel with the high priced vets (gagne, cameron, suppan), and the team would ride Sabathia to the world series, or at least the playoffs. no such luck i guess.
by horace tarbox on Sep 19, 2008 6:59 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
No idea how you get Americas team. They have a large fan base, being the 3rd largest city in the US means off course they are going to have a large fan base. But if you see the postings of other clubs about the Cub fan base actions (not all of them but enough) you see that they are one of the most hated fan bases in MLB.
There are plenty of great Cub fans out there, but to crown them Americas team is a far stretch. I thought we liked winners. I’d ray Americas team right now would be the Rays. Young talent some how putting it together and taking down the goliths like BoSox and Yankees.

"America's Team" is an unreachable goal.
Any team that generates the kind of following required to acquire such a label (the 1990s Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bulls, the 2005-present Red Sox, etc) also generates enough animosity towards their obnoxious fans that there will never be a large-scale acceptance of them as heroes.
Hence my decision to call it "screwing around" as opposed to "in-depth study."

Just got back...
This is getting downright pathetic. If I’m Mark I’m cleaning house after the season. Bye bye Melvin, Skaalen, Maddux, Iorg, Sveum…everyone of Ned and Melvin’s guys. Enough of this hiring former Brewer’s, go get a real manager. Hire a damn hitting coach that can teach plate discipline. Maddux has done a hell of a job, but it’s time for new blood. Might as well trade anyone who won’t be around in 2 or 3 years when we have a real shot at the playoffs again for quality minor leaguers who are a year or 2 away. Cleaning house baby, that’s the direction I’m feeling.
alright…there is my rant for the night, had to get that off my chest. Lot of built up frustration from a long week, bullsh*t landlords, and ugly baseball games.

I'll agree with you on cleaning out the coaching staff
I can handle a playoff push of Sveum philosophy, but a full year would be just awful. I think he’s more vulnerable to making grit-influenced decisions than Ned was.

I doubt Skaalen is back
but time and again I hear him say something in an interview about a strategy or plan for the hitters and then the players ignore it. If the manager does nothing when Billy Hall is waving at balls bouncing in the opposite batter’s box, what do you think Skaalen should do? Rickie should have practiced bunting, but he won’t bunt for some reason. Just be thankful that Yost is gone.

Totally agree lets put the past in the past
No more guys off the 82 team
Look outside the organization and time to start a 2 -3 year rebuilding phase.
What we got is not working
You have a couple of guys to build around like Braun and Yo but time to shuffle up the deck

I wouldn't mind them getting someone from the Marlins or Tampa Bay staff
Both of those teams seem to know how to win with young players.

Never understood why Kremblas(sp?) never was given a chance
He was able to win with most of these young guys

Bright Side
If they keep this up and don’t make the playoffs, don’t we get to keep the PTBNL or at least pick it?

It's been rumored.
I don’t know what that would mean, though. Cain would probably be the guy going to Cleveland. There’s one guy here that knows the details, and I don’t think he’s here now.

Just a random thought on why Kremblas got the can
Gamel basically has to be promoted to triple a after the offensive numbers he put up. With Kremblas gone, Money can be promoted to manage triple a, which allows him to continue to work with Gamel another year. If he can help Gamel make the same amount of progress he made this year, I would say it is a worthwhile move.

by MadJimiBrewha on Sep 19, 2008 8:52 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
that doesn't explain why Kremblas couldn't have been a 1st or 3rd base coach
supposedly the decision to fire Ned hadn’t happened. I have to think its some personality thing, probably something that would make him a good manager.

Hm. Just got home. Just checked the score.
It’s been a fun season, guys. I think next year we’ll be reloading, and I look forward to another playoff run in 2010, though I maintain hope for next year with our young hitters.
It’ll be fun to monitor the off season with you all, and I have enjoyed my first season as a member of Brew Crew Ball.
Yep, I’ve pretty much given up hope for this year. I hope I’m still proven wrong, but….

Apparently the hurricane only blows to the outfield when the Reds bat.
Christ. Seven homeruns….I’m so pissed I cannot see straight. What’s the record for HR’s in a game, has that been discussed already?

The most by one team for the NL record
Was actually by the reds on September 4, 1999..
The MLB record is 10 by Toronto in 1987.

Remember that game when the Brewers hit 5 homers in one inning?
Those were the good old days when the team sucked, we all knew it, and it was fun if they moderately passed expectations.

Rock talking about momentum
A wise old baseball man once said that momentum was the next starting pitcher. Ours was Jeff Suppan.

You know its weird
I saw Suppon pitch in Small Park earlier in the year and he did quite well that day got the win then goes in there today and just lays and egg
How much is that sad sack going to cost us the next 2 years?

I wonder if he could be traded in an NBA style contract where you trade a good player and include him in a package. If Mark A talks to Melvin almost every day, it can’t be fun to babble about him being an “inning eater” or “big game pitcher.”

Julian Tavarez just got Delgado out
I think I’ll have to spring for Extra Innings next year

And I flip back and he has exploded. Glad that Ned recommended him. If Ned goes to the Braves in any capacity it will be entertaining to follow. Bastard.

Dude, there’s a REASON the Red Sox canned his ass. Justin Masterson can blow games for 1/3 or less of the cost of Tavarez.

MLB.TV is a pretty good option too
And if you get the premium you get all the Radio home and away and next year they are supposed to start giving you both TV feeds home and away.
I have had both but I like MLB.TV better because it is portable unlike Extra innings

To busy watching The Soup
Did the Reds have a giant fan behind their hitters or something? Was there a zip line involved? What was with all the home runs?

The Brewers seem to have lost their heads
I still dont understand the Yost firing at the time that they did, and I just think they arent playing up to their full potential… Im a Cubs fan (and I come in peace), and I am dissapointed to see the Brewers not pull down the wild card

Ah, those yearly traditions of Brewerdom
Ben Sheets goes down with an injury, Mike Rivera appears on the field during a game, the Brewers collapse in the late months of the season, I lose hope, and Vinny Rottino gets an at-bat.

I pray for the Gallardo Jeffress Era to ease this suffering.
Time to rest Kendall so he can catch every game next year just as he did this year. Time to get some sort of spark in Rivera, and by god if he’s talked it over with the pitching staff so he’s possible for a in game situation, Angel Salome.
Ugh, how things have turned and turned in a hurry.
But hey, we probably get to keep Michael Brantley now :)
