Corey Hart
For all the time that Brewer fans have spent bashing Weeks and Gagne and Suppan and Yost and Hall and so forth, it is the play of Corey Hart that has perhaps disappointed me the most.
At the All-Star Break, I actually made the case that he was AS deserving as Braun for All-Star honors.
Now, with a week left in the year, his OBP is approaching .300 and his power has dwindled as the year has gone on. His OBP last year of .353 is a distant memory as he has become a total hacker and it could be argued that it has been a lost year of development for him.
His OPS has dropped 100 points from last year and his second half numbers (.251/.280/.427) are closer to Jason Kendall than Ryan Braun.
While we are dishing out blame, I think it can be argued that Hart's lack of production is perhaps more significant than anything that guys like Weeks or Gagne or Hall have done...at least relative to expectations.

But he's had a 20/20 season two years in a row!
Bye Ned!

I still say a man hitting .230 as a leadoff hitter says something about a team. Though I sure as heck can’t ignore how horrifyingly bad Hart has been in recent weeks. Just seems lost, as does most of the team.
Just sad, no matter who you point the finger at.

Also: Rickie Weeks Post-All Star Break: .265/.385/.446
If anything is ‘lost’ it’s how damn damn damn good Weeks has been in the second half. Not as good as his epic close to last season but he’s been torrid.

Hart and Hall
It’s hard to believe that both of their regressions to a point of utter atrocious plate discipline is a coincidence. To me it speaks volumes of what the hitting coach is telling them. Even if he is telling them the right things, he obviously isn’t doing it the right way to get the point across.
My only regret is that I have but one life to give to my blog

Is it wrong of me to think that Weeks has better long-term value than Hart?

I still think, in the long run Weeks is going to be awesome, but I’m an optimist (and it probably won’t be as a Brewer)
We've got uniforms and everything, it's really great!

It won’t happen until there’s a completely fresh coaching staff coming in. Which I hope happens next year.
I also hope the manager isn’t an idiot.

can you name a manager besides Earl Weaver
that isn’t an “idiot”?

Define long run.
He’s not as bad as he may seem, due to the expectations that came along with him being the first in a series of high profile early picks, but it’s not like he hasn’t had his chances. His OBP has kept him from being a disaster and he’s certainly improved his defense, but I think we can do better than the 11th best OPS at 2nd…
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

No. It isn’t wrong to think something when you’re right.
Weeks’ ceiling has always been higher than Hart’s. And now with Hart’s abortion of a second half and incredibly, incredibly down year it’d be hard to draw any other conclusion.

Don't blame it on the coaches
It’s not the coaches fault that these guys have been absolutely horrible down the stretch. How many times have we put the blame on a coach, by getting rid of them, for our players not executing – and nothing changes.
The bottom line is, these guys have to start taking it upon themselves to get better every day. It’s sad to watch, but half of the guys on the team are playing like they don’t care they are 2.5 games back of the wild card. Now obviously a fan like me can’t tell if a guy “doesn’t care” and usually when a team is going bad it just looks that way, but after firing Yost it makes me wonder whats going on in that clubhouse.
As for Weeks and Hart, I think they are both very similar prospects. I see them having similar HR/SB and of course Rickie with a higher OBP – especially if he gets the average up. If Weeks can learn to hit with two strikes he could be a great player, but he hasn’t done that and I’m not sure that he will. Hart has given actual production so I still feel he is ahead of Weeks, and I think he will get back on track and at least have a solid season next year.

Just for kicks
Since the stats are available, sometimes it’s fun to trot them out there to prove your point. So, Weeks needs to learn how to hit with 2 strikes.
Rickie Weeks, 2008, 2 strikes .165 .263 .286
NL Batters, 2008, 2 strikes .185 .256 .284
Not a whole lot of difference there. Maybe the whole league needs to learn to hit with 2 strikes. Granted, you said he needs to do better to be a great player, and I took league average here. I don’t think the target for Weeks is great, though. If he can show that he’s average or above-average, then we can start talking about great.

And while his stats have been atrocious
his mouth has been far worse. The fans pushed to get him into the ASG over guys in larger media markets and got the Crew over the 3 mil attendance point, and he says that he’s glad they’re going on the road so they don’t hear boos. He also bashed the fans for selling tix to Cubs fans during the abomination that was the sweep at Miller Park. I have been a big fan of Corey all through his career and wanted the Brewers to lock him up like they have with Braun. Now I’m not so sure. He’s got a lot to prove next year
Can't pitch Gagne in rain. He’s like the B-2 bomber of baseball.--TheJay
