Game Thread #PS minus 6: Pirates (who cares) at Brewers (1 GB)
Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers, Sep 23, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
Let's review the situation:
- We're playing the Pirates.
- We're playing at home.
- The Pirates are auditioning a bunch of youngsters, including those on the expanded roster.
I know better than to draw any conclusions, but...this should be a winnable game. Dave Bush takes the hill for us, while Jeff Karstens pitches for them. Karstens threw a quality start (but lost) against us a few weeks ago, but he did so while striking out none, walking a guy, and giving up a homer. In other words, even Corey Hart should be able to get on base against him.
Operative word: should.
Also in action, of course, are the Mets. Johan Santana pitches at Shea against Sean Marshall. With that scenario, I'll be happy to stay one game back. Please? Here's the BR Game Preview for Mets/Cubs, which starts at 6:10 CT.
And finally, the Brewers game gets rolling at 7:05 CT. Here's the Brewers/Pirates BR Preview.
Go Brewers!

It’s so hard for me to root for this team. I am beginning to have nightmares where Jason Kendall is a second T-1000 model and he just WON"T STAY DOWN.
Seriously, if I knew a Sarah Connor, I’d tell here to avoid Brewer games.
On the other hand, Ray Durham is in the lineup, so maybe he’ll poke himself in the eye with his sunglasses, and need to sit another couple games. And then he can strain his calf slipping on sunflower seeds in the dugout. And, who knows, maybe Manny Parra will be trying to park his car and accidentally his Ray instead. Manny’s control really needs to improve.

Also, cyborgs bleed.
At least the old models do. Kendall just oozes saw dust and other gritty substances when he gets cut. Cyborgs also don’t grow ridiculously thick, dark beards.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

My prediction:
Santana’s start is wasted by an anemic Mets offense. I will elect to use this as my one Acurate Prediction™ for the 2008 season (thus voiding any hexes/jinxes/etc.)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Dear Dale,
Mike Cameron as a leadoff hitter this year: .097/.176/.273 and 15 Ks in 34 PAs
Ray Durham as a leadoff hitter this year: .292/.378/.825 and 14 Ks in 74 PAs
I know you are trying to find your own Soriano power/speed leadoff guy, and scatter the R/L makeup of the order … but this is Yostian.
Also, Go Brewers.
Tararreling our way to the finish line.
Isn't Durham hurt?
Or is his hammy better already?
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 23, 2008 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Starting in the two-hole tonight.
FWIW, Ray is just as good of a two-hole guy as he is a leadoff hitter. I’d still having him batting first, though.
Tararreling our way to the finish line.

that was crazy
especially since he did the fake bunt then swing thing and it got by 2 fielders

And seeing him trying to bunt that inside pitch.
That would have knocked sheets out for the season.
It is Santana versus Sean Marshall and several Cubs backups. A Mets loss would be gravy so to speak.

How do you say
“Stay away from pop-ups” in Gagne-speak?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
honestly
I can’t imagine a remaining situation, when it makes sense to bring in Gagne…. even though he seems to be managing (knock on wood). The guy is among the worst relievers in the league.
by keephopealive on Sep 23, 2008 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions
No.
That’s not true. Gagne is mediocre. He gets a bad rap because he used to be so good, so teams pay him a lot of money. He has built expectations that he can’t live up to, so fans treat him like he’s the worst player in the league
i don't have any stats to back this up
but I disagree whole-heartedly. If he didn’t have a name and a $10 mill salary, he wouldn’t even have a roster spot.
by keephopealive on Sep 23, 2008 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions
I just looked up some stats
looking at guys who have pitched 40 innings, only sixteen pitchers had worse ERAs in the NL. Relievers have a statistical bias toward lower ERAs, so only two relievers have worse ERAs in the National League than Gagne. Clearly, we have been overusing a bad, bad pitcher.
by keephopealive on Sep 23, 2008 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions
I should qualify that
2 full-time relievers. Frangelis Osoria of the Pirates and Blaine Boyer of the Braves. Isringhausen is almost as bad as Gagne though, but my criticism holds for him as well.

come on, give the man credit where credit is due
He’s not a high quality reliever, but he takes a little more crap than maybe he deserves. He’s been pretty good for the brewers lately.

Comes in for one batter, get’s the one out or dp with one pitch, and the offense ends up giving him some runs in the bottom half to give him the win.

it is the 23rd of the month
and we just got our 6th win of September. Let’s crawl before we walk.
September 15: Not a bad little Monday
I'd like to see wins in the last at bat
But with extra innings games taken out. The Brewers are 2nd in the league in extra innings game won, so no wonder they’re way up in the last at bat list.

Buster Olney
reporting Minaya got a 4 year extension. Even if they miss the playoffs 2 years in a row he will still be around.

Is this a clause in the $700B bailout?

Saw that on baseball musings, Why didn’t they wait until the end of the season at least?
We've got uniforms and everything, it's really great!
To chill the players/Manuel out?
Got me man.

Prince's HR
Means the Brewers have two players (Braun, Fielder) with 100+ RBI in the same season for the first time since 2001. It’s only the sixth time in franchise history that’s been done.

has that ever been done before by any team?

See, there you go.
Just win baby. Cubs should take at least one of the next two, and that sets you up nicely.

I think he just said, “You know” again.
Half a league, half a league, half a league onward, all in the valley of death rode the Brewer's bullpen.

Good Win
I still don’t want to drink the kool aid, I did that to much last year. But that was a great win, inside the park (ok error but whatever). Just as I give up hope, they suck me back in.
Please let the newly arrived playoff tickets not go the way of my 2007 tickets.
can someone find the audio from uecker? gameday audio cut out halfway through the inning
