Who would you rather run into in the playoffs?

I’d like the odds that in a majority of games I could beat the stuffing out of the Mets’ bullpen.

by Getting Yosted on Sep 24, 2008 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Dodgers were barely above .500 for much of the season and don’t have Johan Santana.

They have the best overall pitching staff, no doubt, but I think the Cubs have them beat SP-wise in the first three games of a series, which they don’t against New York.

Ryan Braun: He loves it.

You might think so but Zambrano hasn't been great in his last two starts

Do you really trust Dempster? I think the dodgers have a much better chance than you might think.

Bill has a point

If you know that tomorrow’s starter is only going a few innings, and you’ll be relying on the bullpen tomorrow, there’s at least a reason to have CC go the extra inning.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

by roguejim on Sep 24, 2008 9:07 PM CDT reply actions

Ok.

But with the expanded rosters, it’s not like you need everyone to be available. If you go with Gagne there, you’ll go into tomorrow with McClung, DeFilice, and Villy all fresh. If those guys plus Gallardo can’t get you to the 9th, it doesn’t matter who else you have.

washington took 2/3 off the phillies a couple of weeks ago….not counting on anything, but….

I’m more worried about a fresh out of contention Marlins team laying down against the mets, while you know the cubs are a tough matchup for the brewers

by ahtrap on Sep 24, 2008 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah what are the scenarios if we tie with the phillies or whatnot

do the phillies win out because they won the season series?

by Michael M on Sep 24, 2008 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

covered in gamethread #1

a 3 way tie results in phillies play mets
loser plays the brewers

no free rides based on records.

Although if the phillies and the mets tie (with the brewers behind) division winner determined by best head-to-head and no additional game played. If brewers finish ahead of them, they play a game between themselves to determine who gets the division crown and thus gets into the playoffs.

linkiedo

here

Should the NY Mets, Philadelphia and Milwaukee or Houston finish the season with the same winning percentage, playoff games would be played as follows:
• The Mets and the Phillies would play a one-game tiebreaker in Philadelphia on Sept. 29, with the winner being declared the division champion.
• The losing team, either the Mets or the Phillies, would then host Milwaukee or Houston for the NL wild-card berth.

I think the 4 way tie is impossible (Philly is up by 5 over the Astros I think, Philly only plays 3 more games). But I have no clue what would happen if the Mets and Brewers both collapse to Houston’s level. I guess by virtue of us losing the coin flips, we’d have to play the loser of a Mets/Astros coinflip, the winner of the Brewers game playing the winner of that coinflip?

I’m melting.

by PagsBrewCrew on Sep 25, 2008 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmm

A HOU/MIL/NYM tie would be Scenario #4 here (unless it’s been changed since 2003) since neither of the three teams could get in the playoffs other than through the wild card. The three teams’ head-to-head records would be compared and since neither of the three teams has an advantage over more than one of the other two teams (MIL beat HOU 8-7, HOU beat NYM 5-2, and NYM beat MIL 4-2), it turns to overall winning percentage within that group.

So, HOU was 12-10 (.545), MIL was 10-11 (.476) and NYM was 6-7 (.462). That means Houston would get to choose if they wanted to be Club A, B, or C in the following scenario. Milwaukee would pick one of the remaining two, and New York is stuck with whichever is left. On Day 1 of the one-game playoffs, Club A hosts Club B. The next day, Club C is the road team in a game against the winner of the Club A vs. Club B playoff. The winner of that second game wins the wild card.

Given that Houston would have to play the Cubs on Monday (due to Hurricane Ike) to end up tied with Milwaukee and New York, this would really mess up the start of the NLDS.

While I’m guessing the Cubs will try to win all of the remaining games. To me, it makes more sense (at least for first round matchups) for the Cubs to want the Brewers in there. If the Mets and Phillies both make it, the Cubs will have to face one or the other in the first round. Whereas, the Brewers winning the wild card would mean the Cubs would face the Dodgers. (IIRC)
