FLA @ NYM, Saturday, September 27, 2008
It's Santana vs. Nolasco. Before you put it in the books as a Mets win, read this Beyond the Boxscore article comparing Nolasco's second half to Sabathia's.
Game time is 12:10 CT, and while the forecast is still fearsome, it's been either dry or a very light drizzle all day so far.

3 cheers for Nolasco
but let’s not get ridiculous and compare him to CC. I like how an entire run difference in ERA is viewed as matching him pitch for pitch.

look at the peripherals:
K / BB / flyballs. Nolasco was, if anything, a little better. The main difference was HRs per flyball, which pitchers have less control over than K / BB / flyballs.
Also, cheese.

it’s worth noting that, if anything, these understate the Brewers odds, because they assume we are playing a Cubs team that is equal in skill to the Cubs team of the first 160 games. While the Marlins and Nats are probably about the same teams they have been all year, that’s pretty clearly not true of the Cubs.
Also, cheese.

ugh
I thought that the “Hunt for October” had become overdone and annoying after a couple years, but now that I’ve seen “Octoberquest,” I think I’d rather they stick to the former.

Is that for the Crew or Mets game?
The Badgers and Brewers are on at the same time. It would be perfect to watch the both, but I think I’m going to have to settle for Uecker.
My only regret is that I have but one life to give to my blog

flip on TV during lunch and Brewers classics has a Claudio start
The egg sammy from the farmer’s market is great. A quarter hour has gone by and there is one out and two runs scored. Estrada doesn’t look so portly.
Ned looks like he could power a household the way he is chewing that gum and Claudio is finally out of it.

Cubs-Brewers lineups
For fun, compare the lineups for the first two games (Game 1, Game 2) of the Cubs-Mets series to the lineups for the first two of this series. Doesn’t seem much different to me – could it be that there’s not some nefarious plan to make it tough on the Brewers?

I was thinking the same thing
I don’t know if Lou put this much thought into it, but if he wanted to (a) rest his starters, and (b) maintain the integrity of the pennant race for the other teams, all he had to do was exactly this: take it easy in equal amounts on both teams.
I guess it could’ve turned out that the Phillies would be pissed, though.
Also, cheese.

It doesn't need to be a nefarious plan
If you think he’s managing the Cubs completely oblivious to the fact that he can directly affect who they get to play in the first round, I think you’re wrong.
But he didn’t seem to be trying very hard last night either, so I guess I can’t use it as an excuse.

Well
All the Brewers have to do is keep winning without worrying about who’s in the opposing lineup.
I do think it’s lucky that Pittsburgh was nice enough to never use their best reliever in Milwaukee while allowing a September call-up to blow two games. Oh well.

IIRC
They never had a situation to use their reliever. They did, however, use their two best set-up men multiple times.

I was surprised they didn't use him Thursday
Blah, blah, never use the closer in a tie game on the road, but he hadn’t pitched all series. I guess it doesn’t really matter though.

I heard that too. For a second, I thought I heard wrong, but it’s ol’ whatsherface again who knows nothing about sports whatsoever.
(come on, if you had to make a mistake, calling him by his real first name would be the least irritating. McClung’s been in MLB since 2003, but FOX didn’t cover a Rays game until this year, because they fail.)
