Nice

I think that would be a great move especially since the bullpen is well rested with the possibility of McClung or even Parra coming off the bench to pitch 2 or 3 innings… and give the brewers the best chance to steal game 1…

I dont like the arguement Suppan is a playoff pitcher… his ERA is signifcantly worse than Gallardo’s… plus the sample size is small in the playoffs, not that we have a huge one for Gallardo this year, but we know on average he is the better pitcher, so throw him out there, he might be our ace next year!

Then you have CC going for game 2, always have a good chance with him on the mound… and then coming back to Milwaukee… this could be the most exciting time in my life, probably will be the most stressful!

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

Honest question

I’ve seen several Boner Jam 08 references lately.(not just here) WTF is that in reference to?

by Oakland Brewer Fan on Sep 29, 2008 5:39 PM CDT reply actions

way to end the article on a down-note

“Gallardo beat the Phillies in his only career start against them. He was charged with one earned run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings on Aug. 3, 2007, at Miller Park. That outing lowered Gallardo’s ERA to 2.55, though it ballooned to 4.20 five days later when he was hammered for 11 runs and 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings at Colorado.”

but that brings up a point I made earlier in the season: Gallardo should never pitch in colorado.

hey, but maybe Gagne would suffer no ill effects in colorado.

but Mota would likely be shelled.

Tom H's take
The Game 1 candidates are Gallardo, Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan. Suppan would be the most rested but the Phillies have beat him up in the past. Gallardo and Bush would be going on slightly short rest but there’s ample coverage in long relief with Seth McClung and Carlos Villanueva.

What the hell is he talking about?

Gallardo pitched Thursday, and would be on 6 days rest.
Suppan pitched Friday, and would be on 5 days rest.
Bush pitched Saturday, and would be on normal rest.

He confounds me in his wrongness. Suppan is not the most rested. No one would be on slightly short rest. This is absolutely ridiculous. I can see random bandwagon fans saying, “Ah, they should start Suppan, because Gallardo is on slightly short rest.”

And neck size to baby eating ratio.

"short rest"

I guess Tom H believes on days when there’s no baseball, it doesn’t count as a day.

As standard is pitching on the 6th day after your previous outing (inclusive) Bush is one day short
Bush Sat
another pitcher Sun
day off Mon
day off Tuesday
pitching Wednesday is one day short of normal rest.
Thursday is normal rest.

Maybe

Tom is thinking of the average days between Gallardo’s starts this year?

by Magellan on Sep 30, 2008 9:30 AM CDT up reply actions

So Gallardo in 1, CC in 2

And given that Game 3 is in Milwaukee, let’s hope that Cy Bush (3.50 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, .228 BAA at home) gets the start, all due respect to Suppan’s playoff numbers.

pretty amusing to watch the rally

Glad there weren’t any boos for Corey or Ben – or maybe they paired Suppan with Bn so any boos would sound like the chants of “soooooup.”

Just thinking

Gallardo’s injury may turn out to have been a blessing in disguise. The only chance the Phillies would have had to scout him would have been against the Pirates, plus he’s going to be the freshest pitcher in the playoffs.

We've got uniforms and everything, it's really great!

by drezdn on Sep 29, 2008 6:05 PM CDT reply actions

Plus we didn't have to spend the season counting his innings or worry about a late season collapse like Parra's.

It’s a silver lining. A healthy Gallardo may have let us clinch the playoffs sooner than the last day of the season. But then there’s the likelihood that a healthy Gallardo and Sheets (at the time of the deadline) would have probably have prevented Melvin from pulling the trigger on the Sabathia deal. It’s interesting to think about the events that spun out of that particular play. Sabathia could be a Dodger right now, or even a Cub if Gallardo had never gotten injured. Not to mention that LaPorta might still be a Brewer, which doubtless would have led to a lot of fans calling for Hart’s benching in September so we could play the rook.

I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

I've been thinking about that too

Could be the single most influential play of the year…for any team.

I am afraid of one thing

McClung was pretty emotional after the Friday performance and he almost killed Mota going after Braun’s HR ball yesterday. Can he be trusted to keep his emotions in check during game 1 if he’s the guy tabbed to rescue YoGa in the 5th? Cranking it up to 98 is pretty impressive, but poor location is gonna cause a whole bunch of problems against Philly. I would almost prefer Parra, as he seems to have the stoner-cool thing working.

by Getting Yosted on Sep 29, 2008 8:22 PM CDT reply actions

no problem being emotional

as long as that doesn’t interfere with your job

McClung pitched extremely well under very high pressure just a few days ago.

If he goes crazy during his day off or even takes some enthusiasm to the mound, I have no problem at all.

Agreed

I think that I’d be pretty emotional if I helped to get the Wild Card lead for a team that has desperately craved being back in the playoffs for 26 years. Wouldn’t anyone else?

I think Parra would be worse. I just don’t really feel like he’s been performing well enough lately. But I guess we’ll see what happens.
