Game Thread #139: Mets (78-61) at Brewers (80-58)
New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers, Sep 3, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
I think fans of the Mets and Brewers feel somewhat the same way about today's pitchers, Dave Bush and Oliver Perez. Both are solid, but are they really this good? Perez has been excellent (if a little erratic) since becoming a Met, and while Bush seems more predictable, he just keeps improving his season numbers.
Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Let's get a W!
Anybody else notice how pathetically easy the Phillies & Mets schedules are from here on out? The Phillies host us for a 4-game series, and play the Mets 3 times, but other than that, they’ve got Atlanta x6, Washington x4, and a fading Florida x6. The Mets finish with us today, then have the 3 games with the Phillies, Atlanta x6, Washington x6, Florida x3, and one potentially tough 4-game series with the Cubs.
I’m not worried about St Louis, but I’d really like to see us put some distance between us and the NL East runner-up, whoever that winds up being….

they try to get them all out, but I hear that there are tons of baseballs in there.
quite frankly Im surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

Hello from bleedcubbieblue!
No animosity, please. Just curious if today’s Brewers game is televised?

Tastes like burning
Even with a loss, though, they’re 21 games over .500 and plenty ahead in the Wild Card, with the stinky Padres headed into town. Punt, Ned, and let Bush absorb it. He’s got good control — he’s bound to get roughed up from time to time.

The Mets haven't recorded an out yet
Just sayin’ … you know … could get really, really good Mike Rivera today.
Or, it could be the day Rickie realizes all that potential. All in one super-riffic 5-5, 4 HR, 9 RBI kind of afternoon.
You know … it could happen.

Yeah, it's clearly September
Looks like McClung had the only decent pitching performance today (for weird definitions of decent involving only throwing half his pitches for strikes…ooops.) He probably won’t pitch again until the 12th or so, just because. Oh, yeah, Bush was OK after the first inning.
While the one pitcher the Brewers have with proven pinpoint control over years and years of minor league pitching, Mark DiFelice, sits. Excellent!

It seems like they didn't warm up Bush enough before the game
Especially with him pitching alright after the first inning.

all I remember is Ned saying he can't get lefties out
and needs to develop a pitch or something

Elsewhere on this absolutely miserable day ...
Glaus homered to put the Cards up 2-0. And the Phils are playing the Nats.
Can we just start the SD series immediately?

Can he play third the rest of the year?

He'll spectate.
But start at SS next year after we’ve traded JJ to an AL team for a two-starter and a reliever.

Ick
The least the Mets can do now is take two of three at home from the Phillies.

To be fair
Playing meaningful games in September is a new concept. It might take getting used to.

Yep.
I suppose there was bound to be a rough patch in September after that August run against mediocre and/or inferior teams. As long as the Mets stay in 1st in the East, the impact of the sweep on the standings should be minimal.
That said, I sure hope Ned realizes he’s managing for his job right now. More importantly, I hope Melvin realizes Ned’s managing for his job right now. If there is a collapse and there are no playoffs, Ned should be on the street, and if Melvin thinks that’s a tough call, he should be shown the door right behind Nedly. Attanasio has done his part and it’s more than fair to hold people accountable if they don’t capitalize on the resources they’ve been given.

the guy drives me nuts
but I expect the him to get an extension.
My impression is that when the team has lost in the past its viewed as not from Ned’s failures but a lack of personnel and the winning that has gone on this season and last is considered in significant degree due to Ned.
