Game Thread #139: Mets (78-61) at Brewers (80-58)
New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers, Sep 3, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
I think fans of the Mets and Brewers feel somewhat the same way about today's pitchers, Dave Bush and Oliver Perez. Both are solid, but are they really this good? Perez has been excellent (if a little erratic) since becoming a Met, and while Bush seems more predictable, he just keeps improving his season numbers.
Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Let's get a W!
Anybody else notice how pathetically easy the Phillies & Mets schedules are from here on out? The Phillies host us for a 4-game series, and play the Mets 3 times, but other than that, they’ve got Atlanta x6, Washington x4, and a fading Florida x6. The Mets finish with us today, then have the 3 games with the Phillies, Atlanta x6, Washington x6, Florida x3, and one potentially tough 4-game series with the Cubs.
I’m not worried about St Louis, but I’d really like to see us put some distance between us and the NL East runner-up, whoever that winds up being….
washington’s taking at least one bite out of the phils every time they meet….the Nats are in position to be a spoiler, hope they take advantage
Must be Chicago
Extra baseballs, extra votes from people long since dead…must everything in Chicago be rigged?

I hear balls get lost in the ivy during BP all the time
they try to get them all out, but I hear that there are tons of baseballs in there.
quite frankly Im surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

I'm in class; how did Murphy get on
Yahoo PBP skipped him:
- J. Reyes popped out to shortstop
- D. Wright singled to center, D. Murphy to third
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Hello from bleedcubbieblue!
No animosity, please. Just curious if today’s Brewers game is televised?
I’m in Milwaukee, but I don’t see it on any listings.
Am I just missing something? Not on FSN today?

No TV a big stinker
I don’t work until 4 p.m., and now I’m stuck listening to Uecker explain how they’re losing already.

I'm in the same boat
I think I’ll just crank up Dave Matthews and follow gameday

Alrighty then
We need some better pitchers

At least Dave Bush made the problem of what do with regard to following the game once I got to class at 2 moot
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Why not
Just start throwing Sabbathia every third game.
I mean, the health of his arm is no concern anyway.
Bad, Bad, Bad Bush today.

Tastes like burning
Even with a loss, though, they’re 21 games over .500 and plenty ahead in the Wild Card, with the stinky Padres headed into town. Punt, Ned, and let Bush absorb it. He’s got good control — he’s bound to get roughed up from time to time.
The Mets haven't recorded an out yet
Just sayin’ … you know … could get really, really good Mike Rivera today.
Or, it could be the day Rickie realizes all that potential. All in one super-riffic 5-5, 4 HR, 9 RBI kind of afternoon.
You know … it could happen.

Potential realizin'
2 walks, 4 SB, 4 H, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 6 R, 1 HBP, 1 CS
By my quick math, I think that’s possible.

I don't understand the sentence
“He’s got good control – he’s bound to get roughed up from time to time.”
Well, that didn't take long
It’ll be nice to face a weaker offense tomorrow…

Prediction
After the game, Ned will say: “Bushie pitched a great game, he just struggled in that one inning.”
Hence my decision to call it "screwing around" as opposed to "in-depth study."
He just made two bad pitches
If he gets a double play instead of a grand slam, it’s a totally different ballgame.

Looks like Perez isn't pitching so well either
It’d be nice to get the bases loaded here for Braun. His BA is .304 right now, so we’ve got a shot.

Someone from the Mets should tell Perez
That’s it’s usually a good idea to throw strikes with a six-run lead.

just so we don’t lose any grit
I hope kendall is still pinch hit for near the end of the game (assuming we’re behind or tied)

At this pace:
I want to see this lineup by the 4th:
2B Joe Dillon
SS Alcides Escobar
CF Tony Gwynn, Jr.
LF Brad Nelson
RF Corey Hart
1B Mike Rivera
3B Mat Gamel
C Angel Salome
RHP Seth McClung
Hence my decision to call it "screwing around" as opposed to "in-depth study."
DiFelice in right, Gagné at short
Now that would be something. And do it quick for maximum effect. Would love to see Gagné try and short-hop a chopper from Reyes.

Good Bush?
Did we just see (excuse me) hear some effective Bush pitching there? Wasting the Reyes leadoff triple.

Grasping at straws
I was going to suggest possibly that here in the 3rd, with Jim Powell taking over, maybe their luck will change. Then I realized that’s dumb.
Jesus, why can’t the Pirates roster be forced to finish this game for the Mets?

Jim Powell's taking over?
Managing or pitching?
I hope it’s pitching, and they have a big orange Schneider truck drive on the warning track while he throws warm-up pitches.

why
does Al Yellon’s BCB have over 200 comments on a Brewer game thread??? Its early September for gods sake!
its a change of pace
from talking everybody off the ledge since quite few people who post there are pretty angsty because of the current 4 game losing streak.

It'd be nice
If the team didn’t make a habit of getting swept at home by first place teams. That said, if the Brewers can win 12 of their remaining games after today, the Phillies would have to win 16 of 23 just to tie.

This is teh suck
Getting home from school, I was not anticipating this. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was on TV and we’d get to see Gamel and Escobar and Salome, but now we cant even see them.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
He's back!!
and thank God for that. I was sort of hoping Bush tripped on the dugout stairs and broke both arms…. We need to see more of Seth!!!
The Bambi's Bombers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
It looks like pitching to contact works best for him
and he’s actually remembered to do it in relief too! <3
(watch me be wrong in the 7th.)
He must be ticked
after Ned said some BS about how he was going to be used in the sixth or seventh inning all the time.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
hey, that's why I complain on his behalf all the time
“But Yost SAID so…so why does he only pitch every 6 days?”
Of course, hard to pitch in the 6th when most of the pitchers go 7 or 8…hmmm.
Salome!
Too bad it’s not on TV, I’m curious to see this crazy stance.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Oh, so now Ned uses the catchers?
(come on, McClung can bat for himself…although with all the newbies here, he’s probably not better than the bench options unlike last week, heh)
Too bad that it probably won't help us win
I think we’re too far behind now :(

Yeah, it's clearly September
Looks like McClung had the only decent pitching performance today (for weird definitions of decent involving only throwing half his pitches for strikes…ooops.) He probably won’t pitch again until the 12th or so, just because. Oh, yeah, Bush was OK after the first inning.
While the one pitcher the Brewers have with proven pinpoint control over years and years of minor league pitching, Mark DiFelice, sits. Excellent!
It seems like they didn't warm up Bush enough before the game
Especially with him pitching alright after the first inning.

To be fair
Playing meaningful games in September is a new concept. It might take getting used to.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Yep.
I suppose there was bound to be a rough patch in September after that August run against mediocre and/or inferior teams. As long as the Mets stay in 1st in the East, the impact of the sweep on the standings should be minimal.
That said, I sure hope Ned realizes he’s managing for his job right now. More importantly, I hope Melvin realizes Ned’s managing for his job right now. If there is a collapse and there are no playoffs, Ned should be on the street, and if Melvin thinks that’s a tough call, he should be shown the door right behind Nedly. Attanasio has done his part and it’s more than fair to hold people accountable if they don’t capitalize on the resources they’ve been given.

the guy drives me nuts
but I expect the him to get an extension.
My impression is that when the team has lost in the past its viewed as not from Ned’s failures but a lack of personnel and the winning that has gone on this season and last is considered in significant degree due to Ned.
