Game Thread #141: Padres (54-86) at Brewers (81-59)

San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers, Sep 5, 2008 7:05 PM CDT

Craig Counsell must have really pissed off Ned when he reminded the skipper to pinch run for Brad Nelson the other day, because not only is Bill Hall starting tonight against the righty Josh Geer (who?), the Brewers went out and acquired Mike Lamb to serve as a less offensively offensive left-handed third base option.

The magic bullet himself, CC Sabathia, takes his turn for the Brewers tonight. Money quote from Attanasio that's raising some eyebrows:

"If anybody ever deserved a big contract, it's CC Sabathia, right?"
Tim Marchman isn't sure he agrees.

Game's at 7 Central (BR Game Preview). Go Brewers!

watching gameday, I’m confused by the scoring. They said the batter reached on a fielder’s choice, gave Hall an error, but charged CC with an earned run

by keephopealive on Sep 5, 2008 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Grounded to third, runner goes. Bill ran in, got the ball and threw it 1st base side of the plate. Runner easily scored.

by SgtClueLs on Sep 5, 2008 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I was just commenting on the tapper toward third that CC had to go further to get than he did in Pittsburgh. The scoring play wouldn’ve been tough for Billy to prevent.

Just bring a different guy in for every batter in the 8th inning. They might not be very good, but maybe the opposing hitting coach will screw up his scouting reports. Can’t be any worse.

Form for reporting on games with Gagne pitching

The Milwaukee Brewers of Milwaukee entered the 8th inning of their game against (paste team name here) with (a lead of 1/2/3 runs the game tied). Gagne proceeded to (walk, hit with a pitch) the first batter. The second batter proceeded to (drive the runner to third, hit a home run).

By the end of the inning the other team had managed to (tie the game, get a 2 run lead, break the will of the Brewers).

Ned Yost said (“I stand by my guy, Gagne will be pitching the 8th from here on out”, “He just missed one pitch”, “This is god punishing us for Villanueva pointing at the Cardinals. I’ll make sure he is punished”)

A thought

Is a team that gets runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs and cannot get a runner to 3rd worthy of being a playoff team?

And it is not just tonight they do stuff like the last inning all the time lately
