Strange PTBNL update

Strange PTBNL update
Aren’t they all?
I really hope it’s not Green. I still think it’ll be Brantley.

I've never heard of a conditional one like this before

It makes some sense though, particularly for a rental player.

Out of curiosity, why do you think it’s Brantley, and why do you hope it’s not Green?
As an Indians fan, it wasn’t immediately obvious to me why Brantley was a contender, but the more I looked, the more I came to prefer him over Green.

It's more about fit for us
We’re stocked in the outfield, especially at the corners. Brantley’s obviously a nice guy to have, the OBP skills are tremendous. However, if he can’t play center field, he doesn’t have much value to us as Braun and Hart will be on the corners for a long time and Gillespie waiting in the wings. If he can play center, he has a rare skill set that is extremely valuable. But the Brewers continue to play him at first or in left for Lorenzo Cain and such.
The Brewers are in a rare position right now of having young, solid guys all over. There’s a major hole at third, and there will be one at catcher after Kendall. If Gamel can’t play third, there isn’t any sort of safety net except Green. I’m higher on Green than most people, I think. Gamel put up a .300/.370/.474 line at Brevard County in ‘07, Green put up .291/.387/.447 there this year and he can actually play third base and from what I know, he’s extremely capable at second as well. Third and second are pretty weak in the Brewers system right now, especially if you don’t consider Gamel a 3B.
So it’s really personal preference. I’d hate to give up Brantley when there will potentially be a spot in center for him in 2 years, but if he can’t defend out there he doesn’t work out for us. For a team like you guys, he might have value as a corner outfielder with a high OBP if he develops more power. From your perspective, LaPorta-Sizemore-Brantley could work pretty nice.
If it comes down to those two, the Indians are getting a good player regardless. Based on needs and risk right now, I’d rather keep Green than Brantley, but I could understand someone wanting to keep Brantley instead.
…of course, that’s if Lucroy isn’t in the deal.

Kinda related
Mike has some personal matters to take care of (not serious) and has been officially pulled out of the AFL. Nothing to do with the trade I promise, and yes I did infact ship his stuff to arizona so ill have fun getting it sent back.

Are you guys buying this?
I don’t think it’s unprecedented, but it is strange, and I always think it’s strange when a key provision of any deal goes unreported. Wonder if Hardricourt will confirm or refute this?

Better prepare to wait for about a day for Haundricourt to hear about it first
As for buying it, I dunno. Presumably Hoynes is more informed than I am, yeah? I mean, why would be write that unless someone on the team told him so? I’ve heard from a couple minor league players, ones not involved in the deal, that they’ve heard it was conditional too. How this ties in with Joshua Kusnick’s reports, I don’t know.

I've never heard of a conditional deal like that before...
… but there have been trades in the past where the fact that there was a PTBNL involved and no one knew about it for weeks or months. MLB has always been more secretive about this stuff than other professional leagues.

that is true
but to be fair, the NFL and NBA don’t many (if any) minor leaguers to deal.

any chance Sabathia is the PTBNL?
that way Cleveland would get the compensation pick. That would be pretty groovy (Sabathia traded for himself), but I think someone said that major leaguers can’t be PTBNLs.

Harry Chiti and Dickie Noles actually were traded for themselves
