Game Thread #143: Padres (54-88) at Brewers (82-60)

San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers, Sep 7, 2008 1:05 PM CDT

Hey, winning season!  Pretty nifty, even if would've been niftier while the Mets were in town.

Today's matchup is Manny Parra and Chris Young.  I hope Manny does well, since I would prefer not to spend the rest of the year chattering nonstop about his innings count.

Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

awards and what not

MVP, Cy Young and RoY almost seem like an alternative to the real season. Cards fans are hopeful that Pujols is MVP, either Votto and Soto will probably win the rookie award.

And fans of the Padres hope that Lincecum doesn’t beat out Jake for the Cy Young. It even carries over to the San Diego newspaper in their story Brewers are one Sheets to the Win.

Sounding like the Brewers and Yost, they wanted an error called on the Braun squibber that Peavy fielded and threw low to Dante Gonzalez so his ERA doesn’t bloat up. That sounds reasonable although leading a story with it is a bit sad.

Wanting Braun called out because he ran “inside the basepath” is beyond Yost. Talk about reaching for a technicality. Unless the player moves significantly to one side or the other I can’t remember it being called. I can’t remember it being called when a player wasn’t evading a tag.

Beyond Yost?

From last Wednesday:

When looking at the replay of the key play in the 10th inning Tuesday night – when catcher Jason Kendall’s throw crossed into foul territory and Rickie Weeks couldn’t glove it – Yost and his staff realized base runner Jose Reyes was running well out of the base line.

“He was definitely out of that 45-foot box, running on the grass,” Yost said. “It’s an umpire’s job to see that and call it interference, and he’s out. But we didn’t see it, either. We saw it today. He’s running in the grass.”

I wonder if Webb is killing his Cy Young chances with his trouble getting over the 20 win hump

I am starting to fall into the Timmy Lincecum camp for Cy Young I would love to see CC get it but I do not think he will solely on his short time in the NL

And I think Lincecum is more deserving due to his record of 15 and 3 playing on a terrible Giants team.

And remember Webb should have at least one more loss since he was the guy let off the hook the day the Crew melted down and pissed away the 5-0 lead in the 9th out in the desert.

Kouzmanoff

I know he’s been aggressive at the plate this series, but the TV crew could at least look up how often he’s swung at the first pitch. Heck, I’ll do it: he swung at the first pitch 1 out of 5 times on Thursday, 3 of 5 on Friday, and 1 of 4 yesterday. Some of those at bats he saw two or three pitches before swinging. Yep, it’s hard to remember an at bat where he didn’t offer at the first pitch.

You can't blame Manny, says Schoeder.

What an effin’ understatement!

Without the two errors, Parra is out of the inning with NO runs. Parra and Fielder should kick the shit out of Hardy and Hall after this inning.

Yost’s visit to the mound BEFORE the roof caved in should be in the YOSTING Hall of Fame.

by heybatterbatter on Sep 7, 2008 1:52 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Why?

I get the feeling that if he had waited until after Hall’s error to visit the mound, people would be mad he didn’t calm Parra down or somesuch after Hardy’s error and the walk to load the bases…

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Sep 7, 2008 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah

That’s on Hall all the way. Manny got the pitch/result he needed there.

Now, if you want to question what Hall is even doing in the lineup today, I’d say that’s fair game.

Now you are pro-Cameron

by Lake County on Sep 7, 2008 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The point is

Apparently Yost made a mistake by going out to talk to Parra after he walked the bases loaded.

For all we know, it was something he said that made Parra throw the pitch that should’ve got him out of the inning. Instead the inning went to hell and it’s at least partly Yost’s fault for visiting the mound when he did. Yost deserves criticism a lot, but that’s really a stretch.

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

I haven't dumped on Yost this week.

I was due. So was Yost. Let’s say the manager made no difference in the outcome of that half inning and call it even. (Saw a Yost Infection t-shirt at the game last night. Cool. I wish him well in Atlanta when Cox retires.)

kind of ironic

that we didn’t get the “Sunday lineup” or the 3rd base platoon and that might have changed things. The Sunday lineup generates all sorts of hoopdeedoo. People complain that they don’t want to see the 2nd stringers, but how about a win. He can play me at third if it means a win.

Other than Crede(he of the iffy back) what free agent options are there for fixing our huge life sucking hole at 3rd base?

Shame we are stuck paying Hall for at least 2 more years or is there a GM out there stupid enough to trade for him?

Parra as whipping boy?

Fielder and Yost take him on on differenct days. They know he will take it. Too bad for Parra. Yost should have reamed out Hall and Hardy, if he felt a hissy-fit at someone was the answer. Better yet, Yost should have gone to the clubhouse and given himself an ass-kicking on general principles.

Young has a 5 ERA and is no-noing us. Parra gives up one earned run in five innings. Our team looks like shit today, and Parra takes the heat. So much for justice…

But it’s bobblehead day. Not a complete loss.

I don't know if there's a Ned quote

But Anthony Witrado had this in a notes column about DiFelice going down to Nashville:

In DiFelice’s first call-up to the big leagues, he pitched 13 2/3 innings and allowed 13 hits and six runs (3.95 ERA). The team wants him to work on his changeup and breaking ball to left-handed hitters and they’ll allow him to start in Nashville.
