Game Thread #144: Reds (64-79) at Brewers (82-61)
Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers, Sep 8, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
In typing up the headline just now, I accidentally came up with "Brewsers." Over the weekend, I saw Legally Blonde: The Musical. Coincidence?
The matchup is Edinson Volquez and Dave Bush. They last faced off just over a month ago, and Bush had one of his best starts of the year. Volquez did not. And that wasn't even at Miller Park!
Sounds like Mike Cameron will be back in the lineup tonight. If he hurries, maybe he'll be the one to hit home run #250,000.
Game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Hopefully the offense wakes up tonight
Durham and Counsell are in the lineup.

Federer Murray as a warm up to the Brewers tonight
Federer just broke to take a 4-2 lead in the first set. Actually with the packers I wonder if anyone will be watching the Brewers tonight? These games are starting to become really important for the Brewers so hopefully they can take 2 of 3 here.
dixie, if you've got a minute: I don't know what it takes to whip up one of your famous wear pattern charts
I’d be curious to see David Riske’s before and after he hyper-extended his elbow. I’d rewrite the stats, but this post at Brewerfan sums it up:
Before the injury he had 21 IP, 8 BB, 14 K, .711 OPS against. Yeah he had a 4.71 ERA but over 21 IP that is going to be very erratic, those are pretty good basic stats for a RP.
After the injury he has 21.1 IP, 17 BB, 13 K, .981 OPS againstf or a 5.91 ERA. He has been a complete wreck since the injury
It seems like his velocity is down from 89-90 to 87 consistently now, and I’d speculate that his movement has gotten worse.
And to your point: yeah, this game’s viewership is gonna be pretty low. I actually like watching the Packers, but I refuse to give them too much attention because I’m jealous of all the attention they get.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
Yost continues to amaze
Asked if Riske was simply fighting mechanics or not feeling 100 percent healthy, manager Ned Yost said, “I think it’s probably a little of both. He’s battling through some things. He’s doing everything he can.”
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
To my best buds outside of Red Reporter

Volquez has an outside shot at 20 wins. You can afford to drop a game in the wild card race… right?
Now why would you write lambda mod zero in artichokes on your chest?

Oh, so funny story NOT related to baseball...
I went to go look at Pats Pulpit, see what they think about Brady’s replacement, and apparently I’m blocked?
I think I made three comments total there in however many months and they’ve all been deleted… For no reason. Weird.

Haha
With 19 games to play, the Milwaukee Brewers entered the final three weeks of the regular season Monday with a four-game lead in the National League wild card race.Sounds good, right?
“It doesn’t sound good,” Brewers manager Ned Yost shot back.

quiet in here
Can’t imagine why…
But yeah, just keep remembering C-Pat’s HR earlier in the year – I do (unfortunately).
It was off Eric Gone
We don’t want to remember it either

Yeah
“Dave Bush intentionally walks Paul Bako” is not something I ever expected to see when I looked at Gameday there.

How about..
Ben Sheets intentionally walked.
or
HR Jason Kendall
or
RBI Rickie Weeks.

Question
Am invited to bachelor party this weekend. Received this note:
Lastly, please respect the ‘WASHED OUT FORMER ATHLETE’ theme of this bachelor party and show up in costume!
Is that gay? or is that just me?
Should I dress up? Wear what?

off of Bush?
I’m shocked. Shocked, I tell you!
Punt return touchdowns are nice
Jason Kendall homers are nicer.

Never a good game...
When your starter has an era of 81.
Before this inning...
I thought the only team that could pull off the bases loaded, noone out 0 runs was the Brewers.
How....
Can Counsell have a higher OBP than Hart… That’s crazy! That bird is trying to use my credit card!
Counsell walks
He’s got more BB this year than Hart does in less than half as many PA’s.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
How about this for a rare gamecast line?
Jason Kendall 2 for 2, 2 HR’s.
Brantley PTBNL?
Apparently according to Gammons he is.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
I would be very happy if thats true.
I used to think not so much, but now, between him, Lucroy and Green, I would much rather it be him.
Although, I forget, who’s the fourth rumored player it could possibly be?
Wait, what?
Oh, I thought it had come out who the fourth was.
I hope it’s not Gillespie. I don’t know how they could choose Brantley over the other three, though, unless they have prospects blocking some of the other positions.
Wait, what?
That would be foolish rationale
considering the have a certain Grady Sizemore playing center.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
haha
Silly me forgetting him. When is his current contract up? Maybe they want a cheaper alternative/potential replacement?
Wait, what?
I really don't know what they're doing
This is his 4th full year, so I’d geuss he’s in the same boat as Hardy is contract-wise. Unless they really think he could be viable as a Fukudome type corner outfielder.
Sat: George 2 (37, missed catch, fielding) Fri: George (35, throw) Tues: George (34, throw)
He's signed through 2012
They inked him to a six-year deal to at the beginning of 2006.

Now that the game is official, HR #250,000 was hit by Gary Sheffield. Now everyone can go back to not caring about how many homers have been hit in major league history.

if Patterson were not drafted so high
is there anyway he is still a big leaguer right now?
I sure hope we’re not saying the same thing about Rickie in a couple years.
Not to pick on you, but I hate that comparison
Weeks career OBP: .351
Patterson: .293, including .239 this year

Was that game in Arizona the only one Torres has hard-core blown all year? I think so. There’s been a few that he gave up a lead and got out of the inning. Hopefully that’s not the case here.

Now would be a great time for him to pay us back for the crucial blown saves last year.

My guess is that Yost was playing for the win rather than extra innings, hoping someone could get on and then someone else would get a homerun.

Reds that stung the Brewers this year
Corey Patterson, Paul Bako and Jeff Keppinger. I’m sure there are others but, man, those are painful.
