Rumorville: Nick Swisher
TBTSNBN reported yesterday that while we were enjoying another balmy January Saturday in Milwaukee, the Yankees were scoping out another Cameron trade --- this time sending Nick Swisher to Milwaukee for Mike Cameron.
Swisher's stats are here. Swisher's not a bad player, and knows how to take a walk (walking 100 times in 2007!). He's also a switch-hitter (a swish-hitter?), which would be a lefty bat. Still, his contract plays out like this:
2009: $5.3 million
2010: $6.75 million
2011: $9 million
2012: $10.25 million, $1 million buyout
That's a little more than $22 million (including the buyout) over the next three years, and he's coming off of his worst season in his career. It seems odd to think we'd trade Cameron for salary relief, only to pay out $22 million to Swisher.
Interestingly, the Yankees could just move the Swish to center, seeing how they don't really like having Melky there. (With Teixeira now in the fold, the Swish seems to be out a position.) I wonder what the reasoning is --- salary savings, maybe, though in doing so they'd just be taking on Cameron's extra salary.

they've got Melky, Gardner or Damon for CF
They’ll save salary after next year and everyone can downplay it, but I wonder if there is something to the whole clubhouse thing. Tex seems like a monumental dork. He hasn’t got along with Alex R. in the past. Alex R. doesn’t mesh well with Jeter. I could see most of the team going their own way on the road although hopefully Cano and Melky will still party hardy.

"going their own way"
i’m not sure what your comment implies, ol Pete, but as long as A-Rod and Tex go “their own ways” to .950 OPS like they have done in the past, that figures to be a pretty fearsome heart of the order. through in a decent full season from Posada and a regression up to the mean from Jeter, and their offense has a great base. imagine Swisher’s 100 walks in front of A-Rod, Tex, and Posada.
"Nothing is working right now with a lot of the guys. We're trying to see pitches and see what we can do. ... I'm not going to sit there and walk, though. I'll eventually find it, and hopefully we'll still be in it." -Corey Hart

*throw in
not through in.
also, imagine an 100-walk player in front of Braun and Fielder.

Where did Swisher bat in the Yankee lineup?
I am guessing if he was in front of Braun, pitchers would be throwing a lot more strikes in order not to have to pitch to Braun with runners on base.
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

I prefaced it by referring to the “clubhouse thing.” Yeah, they have a lot of offensive potential, its a friggin’ all star team.
It is also a job. They spend more time with each other than their families during the year and while a shitty clubhouse can win a WS, it can also hurt a team. And the question was whether that was a consideration.

I don't mind Swisher's '09 and '10 contract so much
My impression is that he would basically give us very similar offensive production to Cameron with a better OBP and the added benefit of being a switch hitter. I’m not sure of his defensive skills, but coming off a down offensive season definitely works in our favor in terms of maybe the Yankees picking up a little of his salary down the road or maybe an additional player coming back our way. I also tend to think he or Hart would be put on the trading block 1 or 2 years down the road when Cain is ready.

Supposedly Swisher isn’t all that hot in CF, so you’re talking a corner outfielder. I thought Cain was a possible CF.

Cain in CF
That was my impression also. I was thinking along the lines that either Hart or Swisher may be in CF when Cain is ready. Depending on Swisher’s defensive abilities in CF, Hart could still be moved to CF with Swisher taking up RF.

Cameron is fantastic. That would not be a good deal for the Brewers.

At least we're getting better on teh rumor front here
We started with Melky Cabrera and Kei Igawa. Swisher looks like a machine compared to them. And yes Cameron is fantastic thank you.
Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.

Melky Cabrera is pretty good. But, again, not as good as Cammy.

by what standards is Melky Cabrera "pretty good"?
especially if you think Swisher is nothing special.

And having a first name that sounds like it's an insult.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

I like Swisher. He'll regress to his career average next year.

I like this deal
Yes, Swisher had a terrible year last year.
But if you look at the last three years, their power, average and K numbers are close. Swisher has a bigger potential upside with his power. The big difference is that Swisher walks about twice as much as Cameron.
The Brewers could really use someone who gets on base consistently. In an average year, Swisher gets on perhaps 70 more times than Cameron. Cameron is 36. He’s probably not getting any better and should be on the decline. Swisher is 28.
I don’t like what it does to the defense, but I sure would like to see Braun and Fielder have about 70 more baserunners on in front of them.
Don't try to do too much with it. Just take the ball the other way.
