Wednesday's Frosty Mug
The Brewers exchanged arbitration figures with their three remaining arbitration eligible players yesterday, news so big that Hyatt (in a FanPost) and I (in a FanShot) both could not resist the urge to report on it. The Brewers are down to three arbitration eligibles because Seth McClung agreed to a one-year deal for slightly more than $1.6 million.
The three remaining eligible players are arguably three of the team's biggest lightning rods: Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks and Corey Hart, so it should come as no surprise that reactions to the offers came from a broad spectrum of directions:
- The Bucky Channel thinks the Brewers are lowballing Fielder.
- In-Between Hops thinks the Brewers expected Scott Boras to ask for more on Fielder's behalf, and thinks there's a high likelihood the Brewers will strike a deal with Fielder before arbitration.
- Boras said he also expects to continue negotiations.
- Brewed Sports doesn't think Rickie Weeks deserves to double (or triple) his 2007 salary.
I guess I'll just lump all the negativity together in one paragraph: Brewed Sports has a list of their ten biggest Brewer fears for 2008, and Greg Connolly of the University of Idaho Argonaut thinks the Brewers and Padres are tied for the worst offseason.
I've got four minor league notes today:
- The Merced Sun-Star has a profile on Omar Aguilar. They give him "an outside shot" at making the Opening Day Roster. "Outside shot" may be a bit of an understatement.
- Bad Wax has listed Mat Gamel as one of their "Ridiculous Rookies" for 2009.
- John Sickels of Minor League Ball has uploaded his profile of Cole Gillespie as one of the excerpts from his book. I buy a copy of the book every year, and if you follow the minors at all you should too.
- Right Field Bleachers has an interview up with Brae Wright.
Cubs: Signed Japanese pitcher Ken Kadokura, Luis Rivas and Mike Stanton to minor league deals.
Mariners: Acquired David Aardsma from the Red Sox for a minor league pitcher.
Mets: Signed OF Cory Sullivan to a minor league deal. Also, their interest in Ben Sheets may be driven by the fact that Oliver Perez is still seeking a five-year deal.
Tigers: Are still interested in Brandon Lyon, but a "mystery team" has reportedly made him a 2-year, $9 million offer.
Also, the D-Backs are in the market for a new mascot after firing the previous one following a DUI arrest. I'm really not an expert in the field, but I would think general drunkenness wouldn't really impact a mascot's ability to do his job.
Oh, and it's possible we're all going to hell.
Drink up.

Any specifics?
Or are you just in it for the name calling?

No?
Whatever. You probably think that Adam Dunn strikes out too much too.

Question on your blog post
Jeff pretty much covered his salary in the other Weeks thread. I was wondering where the attitude issue that you base your post around came from?
From the outside looking in, he seems to be a good teammate, didn’t have any issues getting benched for Durham last year and was constantly praised by the TV guys as being a hard worker. The worst I can think of is that he was a bit surprised to be sent down to the minors a couple years ago, is there something I’m missing?
I’m probably wrong on this, but isn’t UZR/150 a bit better than UZR when looking at a player over the course of a season? If that’s the case, Weeks was still a bit down from 2007 (about 3.5 runs over 150 games) and I struggle to see how he was “4 times” as bad on defense.

These are reasonable points.
I actually didn’t write the Weeks post in question. Our contributor ESK penned that, and I think he would be the first to admit that he has a (somewhat) irrational hatred of Weeks. I don’t want to speak for him too much, because I actually mostly agree with you.
I can’t speak to the “4 times as bad” on defense either. If you drop him a comment, he’ll respond to you.

I hate people that have irrational dislike of specific ballplayers.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

I never like Ruben Quevedo
Or Ronnie Belliard, for that matter. The punk.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

Clearly, you have something against persons of size not named Prince.
Sizist.

This was a joke.
A bad one, but nevertheless…

Next time someone asks you for an example of irony
I’m shocked any fella of intelligence stills tries to wear one.

I love wearing hats.
But usually only ridiculous ones, and only for the comedy value.
I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.

I think he should have the phrase "fella of intelligence" registered as a trademark.
It sounds like some of men’s group at the NSA.

I'm just a fan of the fact that it says "stills" while making fun of people he perceives to have little intelligence.

I caught that.
But I couldn’t let the use of the word “fella” in the post WWII era pass.

$850,000 sounds about right for R. Weeks to me.

I'm no Rickie Weeks apologist...
… but Brewed Sports is asking the wrong question. The question isn’t whether Weeks deserves to double or triple his salary, it’s a question of what his open market value would be and what percentage of that figure he should get now. No matter how frustrating it gets watching Weeks hit pop fly after pop fly and fail to play up to his physical talents, arbitration is about the market and where the player fits into it. It’s not about whether the player is everything you hoped he would be (or everything you think he could be if he’d get his head out of his a**.)
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Oh good
I’ve been waiting for a little favicon image for this site in the address bar.

yeah, I noticed that too
the weird thing is that, for me anyway, Firefox occasionally associates the wrong favicon with a site in my bookmarks. For the longest time, BrewCrewBall’s favicon in my bookmarks was the “B” from Bloglines. It wasn’t that inappropriate, which made the wrongness all the weirder.
Also, cheese.

The uni of Idaho post was confusing.
I can understand why the wider community would think the Brewers had a terrible offseason, but his honourable mention was Seattle??
Has any team had a better offseason than Seattle? (Maybe Cleveland).

I’ll take the Yankees offseason. And I’m guessing the author would, as well.
