Rumorville: Villanueva as closer

In his "Baseball Beat" post, Tom H. talks Brewer pitching and the perils of only having 5 starters.  It's interesting to hear Melvin, Attanasio, and Macha discuss the need for one or two more starters --- but not as interesting as this little nugget:

In fact, Macha revealed that Villanueva would have been the first choice to fill the closer's role had all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman not been signed.

I can see Villanueva as closer --- moreso than us backing up the armored truck for, say, FUentes.  Still, with an already tenuous rotation, moving Villy to closer and bringing on another crapshoot reclamation project would have made 2009 that much more bumpy.

I’d prefer Villy not closing. Let him pitch the higher-leverage situations.

I’m still holding out hope they try again to have him start.

If they don't add any other starters...

… you’ll probably get your wish at some point. Does anyone really think that Gallardo, Bush, Suppan, Parra and McClung (plus Capuano) are going to make it through the season without an injury/benching?

I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

The season?

I’m not convinced they’ll make it through spring training.

I think we all know that signing Hideo Nomo out of retirement is inevitable, so we should just get it over with.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

I can't see how

Only one team in the past 10 years has gotten through a season using only five different starting pitchers.

Eric Gagne DL time: May 23-June 29 Brewers record in that span: 20-9

Ah but Doug has already thought of that.

Capuano makes six, so there’s no need to add any SP help.

We could be lucky team number ten!

Or we’ll be like most other teams and wind up in the 8-12 range.

You know I was being sarcastic, right?

The problem with being dumb is that when you actually understand what you’re talking about and you decide to try to be funny and employ a little sarcasm, people think you’re just being dumb again.

I know you were and was amused

I was trying to further highlight the absurdity of thinking six SP is enough for a year.

I hope so.

(hopes it’s Suppan who bows out first)

No Swindle on Team Canada

If a talented left handed hitter knocks in the run that boots them out of the WBC, we’ll know why.
