Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Rumorville: The Other Cordero

We already closed games with CoCo --- maybe it's time for ChoCo:

While the Brewers continued talks with free-agent closer Trevor Hoffman on Wednesday, they were also planning to check in with former Nationals closer Chad Cordero when he takes part in a pair of throwing sessions this week. The 26-year-old right-hander, rehabbing a major shoulder injury, was scheduled to throw for scouts on Wednesday and again on Friday in California.

Before you start budgeting for Jamie's next Christmas present, keep in mind that 7 other teams either plan to attend this throwing session or have already been linked to Cordero this offseason.  Moreover, he had major surgery on his pitching shoulder in July; a typical rehab time of 9-12 months means he could be ready to start the season, or he might not be ready until the All-Star Break, even assuming no setbacks.  It sounds like the Brewers had kept him on their radar since he was non-tendered by the Nationals last month.

Cordero's stats are here.

Sooner or later you guys won't have the money to pay Fielder,

and I was thinking that maybe you guys could trade him for a good pitcher and sign Adam Dunn to a 1 or 2 year contract, maybe you guys don’t have the money, let me know what you think.

I have witnessed time and time again.

I don’t even know if they’d sign Dunn or anyone. I once read that Melvin wanted a “substantial package” in a trade for Fielder. And the team could use major league ready starting pitching.

The contract that Fielder eventually gets will be way over his true value.

His terrible defense at first base makes him replaceable, hopefully by a Gamel type (if he’s not cut out for 3B).

All depends on the contract

He is still young and would be a very nice gamble if they could snag him for a mlc or something like that (which is the rumor I heard).

They must have liked what they saw

Melvin says he’s going to offer him the minor league deal with major league incentives.
