Friday's Community Frosty Mug

So, as Wisconsin braces itself for yet another winter storm, I'll be driving through it again. Great.

In an effort to get there safely, I left early and as such, I don't have time to write the Mug this morning.

As such, today we've got a Community Frosty Mug again. Read something interesting today? Post it in the comments. The Mug will return on its normal schedule on Monday.

Derek Carty over at the Hardball Times says that Hoffman’s off year was more the result of bad luck than a declining skillset.

I was a little surprised to see that his 9.2 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 were both better than his previous two years. He got killed on home runs per fly ball last year at 15.4%. In fact the author points out that the HR/FB stat is the only stat that is way off.

Interesting… and more statistics?

Ken Rosenthal

Ken Rosenthal thinks that the best way for the Brewers to acquire a good young pitcher is to trade Prince Fielder for pitching and replace him with Adam Dunn.

He lists Matt Cain, Joe Saunders, and Ervin Santana as possibilities. Maybe that opens a future path for Matt Gamel as well.

MLBTR comment:

Which begs the question, why wouldn’t the team giving up this premium pitching just sign Dunn instead?

Kind of brings up a good point.

by Supertramp on Jan 9, 2009 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

If everyone was smart, this is a great point

But…..when it comes to evaluating Adam Dunn, many many baseball people have their heads up their asses.

I wouldn’t be surprised in Dunn out-OPS’s Fielder (again) this year, but Dunn is viewed as a one-dimensional player who strikes out too much, while some people view Fielder as one of the most talented young players in baseball.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jan 9, 2009 12:05 PM CST up reply actions

which brings up the reality

we’re not trying to trade Dunn here. Prince is the trade commodity. For me, it would take more than Cain to get Prince. Especially when Bill James rates him as the best player under 25.

I just sit back and root for the taser

by Hyatt on Jan 9, 2009 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

The Rosenthals of the world always want to trade lots of players, have others change positions et cetera. I doubt there is a single GM who doesn’t know that Prince is going to be traded and he could be traded now for the right package.

right

it’s just a question of, “when?”

by tcyoung on Jan 9, 2009 2:33 PM CST up reply actions

Tom H, via Doug Melvin, noted that Hoffman’s ERA was slightly inflated last year because of 2 bad outings.

On April 2 against Houston he allowed four runs in two-thirds of an inning and on June 1 in San Francisco he surrendered three runs in one-third of an inning.

Beyond those blow-ups against the Astros and Giants, Hoffman compiled a 2.44 ERA in his other 46 assignments.

Here is the story of the Astros game. The pitch to Berkman was a fastball down the middle.

I try to avoid self-linking here, but I was reading all the stuff in the JS about the Hoffman signing and noticed the part where it mentioned that he talked with the Brewers’ head trainer about his conditioning program….

…well, I attended a Padres at Rockies game in August and he definitely has a routine going. (He was also doing a fair bit of running, mostly with Clay Hensley. It was v.v. hot and humid and most of the other pitchers looked like they wanted to curl up and die.

They also have Billy Butler and Kila Kaaihue. We’ll take one of those two in the trade as well.
