Manny Parra vs Aaron Cook

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing in from left field at 10-20 m.p.h. Game time temperature around 50.

Complete Coverage >

It's Manny Parra against Aaron Cook at 2:10.

Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on today's game!

Star-divide

Aaron Cook (10-6, 4.32) isn't quite as good as he was last year, when he was an NL All Star, but pitched five shutout innings last time out, after missing over a month. He beat the Brewers on June 11, allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts in six innings.

Manny Parra (11-10, 6.16) is 3-0 in his last four starts, and has posted a 1.88 ERA in three September starts. He's facing the Rockies for the first time this season and trying to finish a pretty rough season with a nice run of quality appearances.

Adam McCalvy has today's lineup, which is just like yesterday's:

Felipe Lopez  2B
Jody Gerut  RF
Ryan Braun  LF
Prince Fielder  1B
Casey McGehee  3B
Mike Cameron  CF
Alcides Escobar  SS
Jason Kendall  C
Manny Parra  LHP

And in the bullpen:

Chris Smith pitched one inning (22 pitches) last night.
John Axford pitched one inning (14 pitches) last night.
Carlos Villanueva pitched two innings (28 pitches) Tuesday.
Claudio Vargas pitched two innings (34 pitches) Tuesday.
Todd Coffey pitched one inning (24 pitches) Tuesday
David Weathers pitched .1 innings (18 pitches) Tuesday.
Trevor Hoffman has not pitched since Saturday.
Mitch Stetter has not pitched since Sunday.
Seth McClung
has not pitched since Monday, September 21.

Enjoy the game!

Enjoy the game!

For lineups and bullpen. Had some technical difficulties (along with a late running lunch), but I think we’re good now.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Oct 1, 2009 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

hmmmmm

not crazy about Gerut hitting second, though i guess he’s got 5 starts there (.240/ .345/ .480 in 29 total plate appearances). i realize alcides’ OBP isn’t stellar, but i’d like to see them try him closer to the top of the lineup. i hope that’s the plan for next year.

by Capt Science on Oct 1, 2009 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I still prefer him down in the order.

His OBP wouldn’t make him an exceptionally useful top-of-the-order guy, and his speed would be wasted there, because of a fear he’d make outs on the basepaths with the best hitters at the plate.

Down in the order, he may not reach base that often, but he’s free to run as far as his legs will carry him.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Oct 1, 2009 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

not that Ken Macha would let him anyway

Hs he not been allowed to run, or is he just not running? I mean, we hear so much about his speed and he has 2 SB. I must say, I expected more.

Dissenting opinion, presented in a reasonable fashion: Fine. Welcomed. Contributes to the dialogue.
Any opinion, presented in an obnoxious, repetitive fashion: Trolling. Irritates everyone involved.

If you can grasp the difference and stay on the right side of the line, you’re welcome here. If you or anyone else can’t, I’ll ban you. Final warning.

Must be tough being so uptight all the time

It is amazing how many people you do not see around here anymore just thinking about loud, but I can think of a number of people who lived in these comment threads last year you never see anymore.

But like I said I am not here to fight Cammy will be history in 3 games and I will not have to bitch about him so life will be good and you will happy well as happy as you get.

Its only a game and this is just a blog nothing more nothing less :)

Kind of a lackluster way to say hello. My first MLB game I ever attended was in ‘85 at County Stadium. Tigers vs. Brewers. I went to many other games at County when I would go back to visit family in West Allis, New Berlin, Brookfield and Greendale. I can tell you which places in SoCal actually sell Leinie’s. My mom went to Pulaski High School. Every Christmas I recieve a gift basket from Usinger’s. My cousin’s band has played Summerfest for the last 15 years. So despite my Dodger-centric nomenclature, I have a huge soft spot for Bernie & the Brewers.

And the first place I saw someone wearing Remetee Gear was in the Noah’s Ark parking lot, out in the Dells :-)

Kendall to SF?

not a Kendall rumor, just a columnist throwing something at the wall

The guess in SF is that Bengie Molina won’t be back and Buster Posey is “almost” ready, but not quite.

by jimf on Oct 1, 2009 2:19 PM CDT reply actions

Are the Giants really dumb enough to try that?

I mean, I know they’ve given Edgar Renteria a full, helpless season, but having a 7-8-9 of Renteria, Kendall, pitcher would be mind-blowingly worthless.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Oct 1, 2009 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I think this is rooted in that Kendall is popular with the media in the bay area from his days in Oakland.

Being that the Giants’ problem is offense, I really don’t see this happening. Not to mention, I don’t think Kendall would come to SF to play part time.

That's tough ground for a Dodgers fan, now that Coletti is in chage.

Jason Schmidt and Juan Pierre come to mind.

But I think the ownership’s insistence on giving the youth SOME hope has prevented Coletti from going full-on “scrappy veterans”, much to the fan base’s benefit.

by Yar Nivek on Oct 1, 2009 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Jason Schmidt is a bonafided fail, no doubt about it. But Juan Pierre, regardless of how high his salary is, has been such a valuable asset this year.

Can we swap Scouting Directors for a couple of years?

Let the brewers select and develop some pitchers (Billingsley, Kershaw, Broxton, McDonald, Elbert), and you’ll get some hitters (Fielder, Braun).

Sure you’ve got Kemp and Loney, but what do you think of that trade?

it was the strikeout-walk-strikeout pattern. Dot dash dot.

Clearly

The only reason Helton is able to make these plays is because his glove is as big as David Eckstein.

Ryan Braun doesn't need help from your wind!

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

What do they call the fourth K?

I know three in a game is the hat trick.

In related news, Brad Hawpe hasn’t been productive today.

No idea,

But I think we should call the third bases-loaded walk the Head Asplode.

I didn't realize Cook was that patient a hitter

He usually isn’t, but the pitching today’s been dire.

by morineko on Oct 1, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Did you see that Jenkins is on the list for 6 Ks in a game?

Cooper is also there, but that’s when he was with the Red Sox.

by sjlee on Oct 1, 2009 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

And did you see this?

Travis Hafner is the only player in Major League history to record both a grand slam and a golden sombrero in the same week on May 7, 2007, against the Baltimore Orioles (grand slam) and May 8, 2007 against Ervin Santana and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (golden sombrero).

I think plunkeveryone is starting to contribute on Wikipedia.

by Yar Nivek on Oct 1, 2009 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

any note about...

getting the golden sombrero and a HR in the same game.

by jimf on Oct 1, 2009 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes...

On August 4, 2009, Tampa Bay Rays third basemen Evan Longoria went 2 for 6, recording a golden sombrero and 2 home runs. The second home run was a walk off home run.

So much for not being productive.

Granted the WPA is going to be nil on that one.

by Yar Nivek on Oct 1, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't worry

we can still finish above Cincinnati and that’s certainly some kind of success something…

Better draft picks, and no giving up first round pick for signing a Type A free agent.

I don’t know that they’ll sign any type A free agents, but it’s some consolation.

I have a bet made in March with a Reds fan.

We MUST finish ahead

Are the Rockies the only NL team

that the Brewers went winless against this season?

by DukeMarkell on Oct 1, 2009 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

Pitch disparity

Through Chris Smith pitching line. Pitches thrown to day.
Brewers 198
Rockies 85

Ok, it's been a rough day and i'm probably more inclined to get angry than usual

But Macha pissed me off with the way he just handled the Smith thing. Smith gets hit in the face, trainer comes running out, and before he even says a word to Smith, Macha’s standing in front of him adjusting his lineup card.

  • I know I’m a few minutes behind with that, but my phone rang.

So

When’s the last time a team gave up an 8 run lead in the 9th?

by drezdn on Oct 1, 2009 5:03 PM CDT reply actions

and a generous strike zone.

by drezdn on Oct 1, 2009 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure, but this seems noteworthy...

5/23/1901… Cleveland was losing 13-5 in the bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, no one on base. They then scored 9 runs to win the game 14-13.

by sjlee on Oct 1, 2009 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Another one...

8/21/1990
Phillies over the Dodgers 12-11 with the score being 11-3 after 8th.
