Sunday's Playoff Action Open Thread
We join the Red Sox and Angels in progress, with the Red Sox facing elimination and Scott Kazmir facing Clay Buchholz.
Then at 6, the Twins are also facing elimination as Carl Pavano takes on Andy Pettitte and the Yankees.
Finally, I'm sure it'll be nice and warm in Denver at 9 when Jason Hammel and the Rockies make up yesterday's snowed-out game with J.A. Happ and the Phillies.
Enjoy the games!

and after I read that article....
They based the pitcher grades on ERA+. I wish I was kidding, but I’m not. I had expected a bit more intangibles with the pitching. (Maybe in the Hoffman grade, but Hoffman’s ERA+ was ridiculous this year.)
It’s also obvious they didn’t base the player grades on OPS+, so that was a bit less lazy.
what is with this 11 AM start business?
Who in LA is going to wake up at 9 AM to watch baseball? This isn’t Patriots Day, guys.
trying to get the game done before
Tom Terrific and the Pats play maybe
Moving on ready look forward not backwards The 2009 season is over it never happen as far as I am concerned so lets boldly look forward to the 2010 season
reading more articles about pitching
Must be an early afternoon glutton for punishment, reading all those bad JS articles. Anyway, on the state of the Brewers rotation….
Every FA pitcher mentioned, except for Lackey and Wolf, I have my doubts about and Lackey will cost too much and IIRC Wolf doesn’t want to leave the NL West. No ex-Cards, please. Pavano (who wasn’t mentioned) is…OK, but he’ll want too much, and I have doubts about his conditioning.
The Brewers are better off trying to pick up non-tendered guys and minor league free agents and have a “Pitching Idol” contest for rotation spots during spring training, if that’s the state of the major league FA market.
we're probably going to end up
picking up a few guys who are coming off an injury and hoping that a one or two can be productive

I'd be onboard with that
A few guys like Baek/Mulder and you can end up with some decent, cheap results.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
I'd be ok with them doing that every year
If the team could develop a reputation for bringing in minor league FAs every year and giving them a full-fledged opportunity to compete for a spot, then it’d make it a lot easier to attract talent via that route in the future. A lot of those guys turn into nothing, but if you can bring in enough of them, you’re bound to find one who can do something.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

I was hoping for an Angels blowout win
But (knock wood) hanging a blown save on Papelbon is certainly enjoyable.
Yeah
That’s a pretty impressive sweep.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that MLB and TBS...
… weren’t exactly hoping for sweeps that put St. Louis and Boston out of the playoffs in less than a week. MLB does have the Los Angeles tv market covered for the championship series, I suppose.

I know it's the truth...
But it pisses me off that MLB doesn’t want good baseball in the World Series. All they care about is viewership…
True
But they’re also going to eliminate one small market (Minnesota) early, and could dump another (Colorado) soon.
If you had to pick four teams to maximize ratings, New York, Philadelphia, LA and Anaheim wouldn’t be a terrible group. And if Colorado wins, they’ll draw attention in a different way, as crazy weather in Colorado could be the story of the NLCS.

That's true.
And I’m sure Selig will talk all offseason about how fair and competitive the MLB is even if the smallest market represented in the final four teams is Philly.

Attanasio might, but Melvin will just mention "resources" and "opportunities" after he's taken to task for a disappointing offseason.

It’s probably little more than a fill-in role, though.

Andy Pettitte has 97 pickoffs in his career.
The equivalent of 32.1 innings of extra outs.
