A D+ Grade? That must have been a Wittardo grade.
Son of Clung, on the Witrado/Haudricourt 2009 player/team evaluations. It's worth noting that of all 2009 Brewers who pitched as many innings as Big Seth, only two had a better ERA. (It's also worth noting that the team offense rated only a B-minus despite being 3rd in the NL in runs scored.)

I enjoy the fact that Weeks gets an incomplete for only playing 37 games
and Escobar gets a B+ after playing in 38 games.

The 38th game
is the key game. Everyone knows this.

My favorite line so far from the story:
Talking about Escobar:
With a better OBP, he could emerge as a reliable leadoff hitter.
I think you could use this template if you’re short a few words in a story about any athlete.
With better power, he could emerge as a reliable cleanup hitter.
With better passing, he could emerge as a reliable quarterback
With better pitching, he could emerge as a reliable starting pitcher

With better writing, Witrado could become a reliable “journalist”.

With better writers, people might buy the Journal Sentinel

too bad that cannot carry over to the Brewers

Poll in the left sidebar--
Who would get your highest grade on the Brewers?
- Ryan Braun
- Prince Fielder
- Trevor Hoffman
- Claudio Vargas

Is this the A for effort grading scheme?
so…mcClung just didn’t look like he was working hard?

Another thing I like (though I am switching targets on this one)
Most disappointing was Catalanotto’s failure as a pinch-hitter, with only six hits and no RBI in 33 at-bats (.182).
One Rambling Al post this week said this
If you ask me to name the two best PH’s in the game, one from each side, I’d say Frank Catalanotto and Mark Loretta.
Not that I’d judge a pinch-hitter by 33 ABs, but I think it’s awesome that Frank Cat is his best PH in the game.

If you ask me to name the two best PH’s in the game, one from each side, I’d say Albert Pujols and Joe Mauer.
Also, cheese.

yeah..
i suppose if they were any good, they’d be playing every AB, eh?

And why are those two on such a mission to get Felipe Lopez back?
I mean the guy hit well here, but usually guys like him with a track record of injuries and laziness aren’t worshipped like that. They rip on Weeks every chance they get.

You mean familiarity breeds contempt?
The grass is always greener on the other side.
Just like anything else in baseball, the other guy is always better.
I wish we played had good fundamentals like the Twins.
If we only had so and so manager.
Our team never gets the guy on 3B home with fewer than 2 outs.
We never score enough runs when we get the bases loaded.
Remember that one time that one guy didn’t catch that fly ball. He sucks on defense.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

Maybe Witrado talks to Lopez about clothes 'n stuff.

?
The only picture I’ve ever seen of Lopez out in public, he was wearing collared shirt. looked pretty standard/nonwitradoan. Does he usually wear Witradoan clothes?

Dunno.
I was just trying to make fun of Witrado for once saying that he likes Braun because they can talk about clothes.
Of course, that was before Braun came out with that atrocious t-shirt line.

atrocious?
apparently you didn’t know they cost $89 apiece! At that price, they MUST be awesome!

I like that Jason Kendall gets a C
He was the worst offensive catcher in all of baseball and was nothing special at all defensively. But he started a lot of games. That’s deserving of a C?
Whatever.

If you're ever looking
to get a better idea of how little offense is expected from a catcher, consider that Fangraphs has Kendall at 1.2 WAR this year…and they don’t account for catcher defense.

And he's going to be always undervalued by OPS
Why do we use OPS again? Despite what Rambling Al says, it’s not a very effective way to measure a player’s hitting value.

Its entirely possible that Jason Kendall has put together one of the most historically terrible offensive seasons
I mean look at this:
.290 wOBA!
.064 ISO!
-16.7 wRAA!
.241/.331/.305
You know you need to take your flute and find a new dress when your OBP is higher than your SLG and your ISO is .064. Good lord.

OPS is good most of the time
With a guy like Kendall who derives most of his value from OBP, it isn’t as good. Russel Martin and Benji Molina are separated by 47 points of OPS yet only one point of wOBA. OPS starts to break down with guys who have a SLG lower than thei OBP or a very low OBP.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
by cooper82 on Oct 11, 2009 11:26 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
So overall it gives you a pretty good picture, but why does everyone use it when wOBA is easier to find and understand and it’s more accurate?

I wouldn't say that wOBA is easier to find.
OPS is easier to find by far. It is hard enough to get people using OPS instead of BA and counting stats let alone an advanced metric.

I have never met this Wittardo guy
….so it only seems fair to hastily speculate the following.
1.) Witrardo is a coward, as most writers are.
2.) Kendall has a very mean glare.
3.) Wirtado is smart enough to know that while Kendall is deserving of an F, the icy glare of Kendall will make Witadro empty his bladder into his pants.
4.) So, therefore Witradanando, reached into his desk, poured himself a stiff drink, reached into another drawer to put an umbrella in the drink, sipped mightily, and then proceeded to give Kendall a C. (because B’s are harder to make as they have curvy AND straight lines).
