The Thursday Thinker: Brewer catchers since 1996
Ok, here's a new offseason feature: The Thursday Thinker.
If you've been clicking links in the Mug lately, you've most likely come across a Sporcle quiz. For as long as I can come up with new ideas, I intend to post a new one every Thursday.
The link to the quiz is below, but before I post it, here are some simple groundrules:
- Please don't spoil the quiz for others. In the comment section below, feel free to post your score to compare with others. But, until 6 pm tonight, please do not use that space to discuss which answers you did/didn't get. After 6 pm tonight, when everyone's had six hours to play, then it's fair game, discuss it as much as you'd like.
- There's no reason to cheat here. All the information used to make these quizzes is relatively easily available online. You could look it up and get a perfect score on the quiz, but what's the point? There are no prizes here, just a fun contest. If you're going to cheat that way, just post a fake score in the comments and save yourself the time.
Now, this week's question:
Since the beginning of the 1996 season (Jason Kendall's rookie year), 27 players have played in at least one game at catcher for the Brewers. How many can you name in eight minutes?
Here's the link to the quiz. Have fun, and don't forget to post your score in the comments!

I got six.
And I didn’t get the top one. Oh well. I only started paying attention to baseball around 5 years ago, so I wouldn’t have remember a lot of them.

A lot of them were pretty forgettable, even if you were watching.
I wrote the quiz, and when I took it to test it, I still missed about ten of them.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

Nine.
And I had to dig deep to get to that number. Oof.

I missed one fairly obvious one. A lot of names I don’t remember on that list. Thanks for a trip in the “way back” machine!

I missed the second one?!?!
8. I also have an autographed ball from another I missed. My brain just would not function.

I was wondering how long it would take for you to stop by and blow away the competition. :-)

I got 8
considering I’ve only been following the team since the 07 season I think it’s reasonable

16.
Well 14, but I’m chalking 2 of them up due to lack of spelling ability.
by Mykenk on Oct 15, 2009 12:37 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I cheated and interneted one for spelling
but 16 as well. I can’t believe the ones I remembered and the ones I didn’t.

I’m guessing mykenk and i had the same ones.
I had to internet 2 of them for spelling. I was surprised how many of those names that I didn’t get were familiar.

Trouble spelling GRIT?
Typing that in should get you half the names on this list.

But I’m mad at myself with the guy who caught 76 games. I could picture him, remember the other teams he’s been with, and think of his first name, but no dice.

But I swore Julio Mosquera caught a game. Guess not.

B-Ref has him listed as playing one game, but doesn't have any fielding record for him.
Box score has him pinch hitting in the ninth, but not staying in to catch.

He was on the roster for some reason for about a week during interleague play, I think
I always gave Yost a little credit for letting him pinch hit, given that it was Mosquera’s first ML time in seven years. He would be an interesting trivia answer: “Who did the Brewers boot off the 40-man roster to make room for Prince Fielder?”

I got 9
I got the top one. There was one I could picture, but couldn’t come up with his name.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

But I’ve only been following the team since 2006. I got frustrated and gave up early, only to discover that I missed some very easy ones.

I never would have guessed
that Ryan Braun caught one game behind the plate.
I only got seven. Then again, I suck at these things.

Really? 23? How can I remember damn piece of crap catchers that the Brewers have put behind the plate but nothing relevant to anything important, say, midterms?
How far will this one fly?

You're en excellent, excellent driver. Excellent driver.

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Since it’s now after 6 pm, feel free to discuss the specifics of your answers.

Dave Nilsson
I could remember he was half of the Australian battery(first in MLB history I believe) and could remember Graeme Lloyd, but not NIlsson.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

stinnett, osik & levis
were the 3 I felt I should have gotten but didn’t.

couldn’t spell Nilsson’s name (never would have guessed that there were 2 s).
It was because of him and Eldred that I stopped getting autographed stuff from players. The year after I got a bat from Nilly and a hat from Cal at an auction in support of the Beloit Brewers (wow that was a long time ago), they both fell apart.

But missed Estrada, good to see my brain still has my back.

I remembered Kendall
I couldn’t remember the top one. I checked the answers and now I still can’t remember the top one. I could probably take the quiz again right now and not get three right.
