Rumorville: Jarrod Washburn
Now that Prince Fielder has finally hit that grand slam, the fact that Jarrod Washburn (stats here) is from Wisconsin now reigns supreme as the Most Cited Nugget of Irrelevant Brewers Trivia. It rears its head again in Rumorville, courtesy of Jon Heyman:
The Mariners and Brewers are expected to be in the mix for Jarrod Washburn, who was terrific for Seattle last year before struggling with the Tigers (2.64 ERA in Seattle, 7.33 in Detroit). A knee issue is thought to be the culprit for his poor performance in Detroit.
As we all know, Jarrod Washburn is from LaCrosse, went to UW Oshkosh (b'gosh), and contributes to BCB under the pen name "backtocali". He won't be cheap, though, not with Scott Boras as an agent.

35 and coming of a career year.
No thanks.

Technically not a career year
But his career averages are as follows:
4.10 ERA
1.94 K/BB
5.33 K/9
5.11 tRA
4.60 FIP
No thanks.

Someone wake up Rambling Al
I’ve already seen folks commenting he’s a product of Safeco and the M’s OF defense, which is ridiculous, because he’s had a better ERA on the road over the past three seasons, and SEA did not have an above average defense until last year.
I’ll be the first to admit he’s old enough to fade, and he’s coming off an injury, but he’s been solid for far too many seasons to pretend he’s not a good pitcher.
Even setting aside the fact that he is old and coming off an injury (which is kind of a big deal when signing a pitcher), I don’t understand his argument at all.
M’s:
2006: 4.67 ERA 5.0 K/9
2007: 4.32 ERA 5.3 K/9
2008: 4.69 ERA 5.1 K/9
2009: 2.64 ERA 5.3 K/9
I realize that is a very simplistic way to look at it, but was it a coincidence that once the M’s got good defense his ERA got better? Is an ERA in the mid 4.00s mean you are a good pitcher? Maybe I’m just too much of a casual to understand.

As much as I hate saying things like this
If he’s relatively consistently been a 4.50-4.60 pitcher in the AL, doesn’t that convert over to something like 4.20-4.30 in the NL? That’s not worth $12 million/year or anything, but it’s certainly not bad.

Well, look at his terrible tRA, FIP, and K/9
With those numbers, who cares, really? He’s going to regress (and it started in Detroit, though Boras will spin it as a ‘knee injury’). If he regresses to career average, yeah he’ll be better than Suppan and Looper. But…are we trying to get a difference maker, or someone who’s just ‘less shitty than what we have’?

Sounds like
He thinks the people arguing he is helped by ballpark and defense are only looking at 2009 and not any previous years.
Personally, I think one of Washburn’s solid seasons is the same production the front office hoped they were getting when they signed Braden Looper. If/when Washburn’s H/9 goes back to 9.5-10 rather than the 7.4 he had in Seattle this year, those hopes will go unrewarded again…but this time with multiple guaranteed years. Might as well pick up Looper’s option and only be on the hook for 2010 and sign some other solid veteran for cheap next December.

We need someone to replace Suppan's bad contract
If not Washburn, then it’ll be someone else. :)

I had a brief but emphatic LOL at the 'backtocali' line.
Cheers, Jim.

Clearly, there's no accounting for taste.

Washburn is actually from Webster
FTFY. It’s in Burnett County, which is roughly between St. Paul and Superior. The Twins can take him as that whole end of the state is almost nothing but Twins fans anyway.

cant blame some of them, we never got brewers games on tv for a long time

Last time I visited a friend in Duluth
He was regularly getting both Twins and Brewers games, which I thought was a pretty nice arrangement.

it's completely understandable
The radio coverage of the Brewers in western Wisconsin is abysmal, too. If I didn’t live near River Falls, I’d have been totally SOL on broadcasts for the last 20 years.
The point I was trying to make is that I don’t understand why people would assume that western Wisconsin players automatically want to play for the Brewers.

he DID play for Oshkosh
i think that’s pretty solidly in Brewers territory
none of his years were spent in MN, even though he was close to the border. So, at least for him, it would be reasonable to assume he has some intrinsic “tie” to the milwaukee organization more than any other that he’s never played for.

It's also nice to live in the same state as your family.
Granted, who knows where his family lives?

Contract Year
The last few “big” contract we gave out came with contract years that were better than normal, Bill Hall could have had an mvp year in 2006, but wasn’t that productive the other years, Suppan had a great year with the Cardinals, even Looper, signing someone after an odd year that goes against their career numbers probably isn’t a good choice for the Crew.
