I'm going to be skeptical until we hear someone else's story, too

This is once again her story. Instead of her writing it this time, she told it to another writer.

This is clearly an issue between the two of them.

So, why would she continue to bring it to the media?

a) She wants attention.
b) She wants fame. (probably why she was with Alcides in the first place)
c) She’s crazy.
d) All of the above.

Is her story true? There’s a good chance of it, albeit, it’s probably an exaggeration. But her relentless pursuit of media attention only hurts her chances of having people believe what she says.

I’m not trying to discount what may have happened. If it’s true, Escobar is a complete jerk. But she is only making herself look that much worse by being so deadset on making a personal matter public.

Or e):

She’s trying to shame him in living up to his responsibilities.

I’m sure I have no idea what the truth is, but it’s at least possible this isn’t a complete lie/money grab/desperate bit for attention/fame and is instead a single mom trying to get the dad to help with raising the kid. Money might be what she’s after, but that doesn’t necessarily make her crazy or even greedy.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Well, that was a strange read

I’m glad Leury is Omar Moreno’s daughter and has documents that confirm what she swore in an affidavit is the truth. It’s unfortunate she feels so wronged. But like Jordan said, I’d like to know more than just her side of things.

Omar Moreno

I have often thought Omar Moreno was the worst player in baseball in the 80s, for a dude who got non-trivial PAs

I like his 1980

That many steal attempts and pickoffs in the number of times he was on first base is impressive.

Good Point

And it wasn’t like he was racking up steals of both second and third. Only twice that season did he steal both second and third on the same time he reached first.

Why did this thread turn into trashing her father's career?

I couldn't find the stand-alone Omar Moreno trashing thread

so I posted here.

He was pretty bad at baseball.

eh

the courts will decide. he’s probably a deadbeatish dad who doesn’t want the responsibility of fatherhood…either that or despises his (ex-)wife enough to keep him away from his kid – who he has never had the opportunity to bond with.

The real villain in this situation is likely the girlfriend/mistress/stalker. It’s completely unacceptable for her to speak to his wife on his behalf. That may come back to him – afterall, what’d he do giving his girlfriend his wife’s cell? Was he avoiding speaking to her himself and “manning up”? Whatever the situation was, she made it worse and Alcides had better run from her quick-like and find someone more stable.

But Alcides – a kid nowadays takes more than a grand a month. Especially if you’re making over 100 grand a year. Hopefully you can get her to agree to less than half of your assets, to which she is legally entitled. But count on having to pay substantial child support costs as well as give her a large chunk of change. And most importantly, never do this again. You get a woman pregnant, you face the music. You get married to a woman, you honor her. If she was unpleasant to be around, don’t marry her to begin with. If you don’t like that she looks “fat” when pregnant, deal with it…it’s only a few months. Looks don’t last forever, unless you’re Craig Counsell or Dave Clark and you should realize that before you get in a relationship.

long story short

Alcides should have married Craig Counsell.

its his kid, and he should pay up.

She still needs to do a maternity test, though.

I can just hear Maury now, “Alcides, You ARE the father!”

I believe this story, and it makes Escobar look like a complete ass

But let’s be honest, probably the majority of professional athletes are not-so-great people in real life. I prefer to, as a person, say Escobar is a jerk – but as a sportsfan I really don’t think it should be relevant. Somebody like John Rocker is one thing – where he’s making racist comments to the media as an athlete – but I never understood why a player’s personal life (I’m reminded of the Barry Bonds witch hunt) should be the concern of the media or sports fans in general. When I root for Escobar on the field, its as a player/member of the Brewers/guy doing his job, not as a friend of mine.

Just as a personal anecdote, there are two pro athletes around the same age as me from my hometown; both of them excelled at sports from a fairly young age and (since that’s all they really know) generally got used to being treated better than everyone else around them, and they never really learned to not be jerks. And only one of those two is even good enough to be in a pro league right now; for players like Escobar who are so highly touted from a young age it’s probably even worse.

That’s why it’s all the more cool to see successful players who generally seem like really nice people in real life (i.e. – Craig Counsell). But I’m afraid they might be the exception.

Does this even matter?

I know we all have a dream that our favorite player is some awesome human being who rescue kittens out of trees and gets orphans out of the burning orphanage just in time on the weekends. But the truth is, probably all the players have a huge ego, screw around on their wives, and are just regular old assholes.

I’d like to think Alcides is a good guy, but all I really care about, and all that really matters to me is his performance on the field. ARod kisses a mirror of himself, that’s fin weird, but he performs on the field and hence he’s loved.

If we judged all the players on how they acted off the field, we’ve love Suppan more then anyone else. But what it all comes down to is if he performs. Look how much we loved Favre, not because he was a drug addict assface drama queen, but because he was good on the field.

PS – The court system will take care of all this, if its his child he’ll be paying enough.

The Brewers trade an excellent all-star caliber shortstop to keep this a**hole just because he’s cheaper. If you want to run a class organization you take the off-field character of your players into account. Hardy is nothing but a class individual who had one bad season at the plate. Escobar is a big question mark on and off the field but, because he’s cheap, he gets the job. Why would a free-agent want to come to a team that is more worried about undercutting their own players than running a respectable and classy organization?
