"Trevor Hoffman's season ended on a low note, but there were plenty of high ones in his first season with the Brewers. He said after Sunday's season finale that he's close to signing a deal to return in 2010."

Nice

Get that squared away right now.

I don’t have a category for "washed-up guys who may or may not be dominant big-league closers sometime soon."

$8.5 tops

But, The Mustache will probably go $10.

no closer in baseball is worth that much.

Not sure why people on this site suddenly think that Melvin’s dumb, and would make deals a third grader wouldn’t.

See…

Suppan, J.
Gagne, E.

thank you

i was going to write the same exact thing, but didn’t feel like having to read the comment that would have ensued.

who said that?

I just said he’s smarter than a 3rd grader.

Gotta gamble as a GM. So he’s lost on a few bets. Doesn’t bother me at all.

by Mykenk on Oct 4, 2009 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Melvin

But Suppan is one of the worst/dumbest contracts in the major leagues right now, not a failed gamble.

Ryan Braun: He loves it.

by SRB on Oct 4, 2009 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think that.

But getting back to your original premise, he did sign Gagne for 10 million, so if your premise is that Melvin wouldn’t sign a closer for 10 million, we already know that’s not true.

From my perspective, if Hoffman wants 8 million, I say give it to him.

And he offered Cordero a bunch of money, too

He’s willing to throw money at closers.

I would question Hall's contract, for certain, and ride the fence on Riske's

although it seemed pretty obvious that Riske had an outlier of a year with KC before Melvin signed him. And he’s been injured more often than not.

Suppan had never been anything more than slightly above average as a pitcher. And, unfortunately, the Carlos Silva deal put pressure on Melvin to up the ante on Suppan. He was also supposed to be a ‘big game pitcher’ after his showing with the Cardinals in the playoffs.

as long as next year isn't a continuation of today's performance

I like Hoffman, but…anyone else notice any issues with his pitching motion over the last two weeks?

Specifically, what?

he's not repeating it exactly

not an arm slot issue, but it looked like he was pushing off differently

by morineko on Oct 4, 2009 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He has to come back for equal or less for me to approve of this.

6M is not an insignificant amount of money, and the closer is the least of our worries at this point.

That would be good

Hopefully a hometown discount is available.

Tangentially, is anyone else hoping the D’Backs make the mistake of the year and decline Webb’s option? That would be a nice risk/reward signing…and one I could live with. If he didn’t pitch well or was re-injured, it couldn’t be much worse than the Loopan train wreck. Conversely, if he pitches well, he can be one of the most dominant in baseball.

But, I’d guess the D’Backs pitcher that will land in Milwaukee this off-season is Doug Davis. Sigh.

The first great move of the off-season

good job doug… keep em coming

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Hey, maybe...

Closer is one of the least of our worries…so let’s have Hoffman stretch his arm out and put him in the rotation! Brilliant! It’ll be like John Smoltz!

by Yar Nivek on Oct 5, 2009 2:30 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yikes.

I really like Hoffman, and I think you need to bring him back at just about any cost. But couldn’t we have gotten some kind of hometown discount? I was definitely expecting something around 6.5, maybe 7.

This leaves us with about $15MM to worry about Cameron, Kendall, Counsell, Looper, Weathers, Lopez, or whatever holes those players may leave.

I like Hoffman a lot --

However, I am not sure about the wisdom of paying some guy $8M to save games for Parra/Looper/Suppan/Bush.

I think that this signing is done predominantly to give the fans the sense that the Brewers are going to be legit in 2010.

Arguments for.
1.) Hoffman can get people out.
2.) If the season goes south, we could trade him
3.) We really don’t have better options in AAA.
4.) Fans and Players get warm fuzzies.

Arguments against.
1.) $8M is a lot for a BP pitcher, especially when 80 wins looks like a stretch for 2010.

welll his pitch speed is ;)

Moving on ready look forward not backwards The 2009 season is over it never happen as far as I am concerned so lets boldly look forward to the 2010 season

Who cares?

There’s a reason he’s got almost 600 saves. Average pitch speed has been getting it done for 17 years.

Bull Pen?

Yes -- Bullpen

I should have used “RP” instead of “BP” — Batting Practice did not even occur to me… further evidence that I am a complete tool.

OK sorry, I knew you couldn't have meant batting practice.

It was poorly worded by me.

I really like Hoffman — I think he is a great pitcher, and I think that the whole “Hells Bells” is a great experience for the Miller Park faithful…. however, I really question the strategy of spending $8M on a RP when our rotation is not very solid…

I certainly do not think Hoffman is “batting practice” level or “replacement level”, even though I certainly worded it in a way that could lead readers to think that I do.

This will likely not be the last move you question by The Mustache

He is full of questionable moves.

In itself it's a fine value and a good deal

If they turn down a similar deal for Cameron, then it’s sketchy.

I disagree that 80 wins is a “stretch”.
