Finally..

To bad it cost us 1million to do it. Unless Looper is stupid and declines his end of the mutual option.

"I really expected less out of Melvin."

Me too. This doesn’t mean we’ll fill Loopers spot with someone better, but at least we know that Melvin realizes that Looper was bad.

That’s something, right?

It also doesn't mean that Looper won't be back...

DM could still decide to resign him to a lesser contract.

by sjlee on Nov 13, 2009 1:24 PM CST up reply actions

Actually, I'd be ok with that.

If he’ll take $2 million to compete for a spot, then he’s just another reclamation project for Peterson.

I don't know

If he works out his command issues, he’ll be 1.5. Until then, he’s somewhere between .75 and 1.

so to count as a full pitcher, you have to be an elite pitcher in baseball?

by Charlie Marlow on Nov 13, 2009 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

wait...

you guys are going in opposite directions.
So Gallardo isn’t a number 1 starter, which would make him a 2 starter. But then you are quantifying him as a percentage of a starter. So what’s the story? Does Gallardo count as a whole pitcher or just a percentage of a pitcher? Because I would assume that anyone that is a 3 starter or better would qualify as a whole pitcher, and Gallardo would be the only one on the Brewers squad that would do that.

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

by Hyatt on Nov 13, 2009 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

Gallardo's a #3-4 in my book right now.

Throws way too many pitches to be a top of the rotation guy, and nibbles way too much when he gets ahead in the count.

maybe a better way to phrase it is that he’s about 75% of what I expect him to be?

by Mykenk on Nov 13, 2009 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

So how many "starters" does the team need?

Do all the parts need to add up to 5 (presumably meaning five #1 pitchers) or 3 or something else? Considering you claim there are 1.75 right now and need 3 more, I guess the team needs 5 total, but that seems unrealistic.

I missed the memo where I needed to start making sense.

They need 3 more starters. 2 to join the rotation, 1 for depth. I’d prefer to get 4 (2 and 2), but that’s not going to happen.

I think when DM said 2 new starting pitchers he was implying that Looper would be replaced.

Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".

by tcyoung on Nov 13, 2009 1:43 PM CST up reply actions

That's what I was wondering

This is just speculation, but I think he might be abandoning that “2 new starting pitchers” line. Given how lousy the Loop was, and how expensive he’d be now, it shouldn’t be too hard to replace him for less, thus freeing salary for his remaining pitching hunt.

I’m guessing the plan now is to free up enough cash to bring in at least one big-money guy (either a FA like Lackey or making a trade for someone like Lowe), and then have as much competition for the last three spots as possible. If that’s the case, I bet we end up dumping Bush, who’d probably get a raise in 2010 as his last arby year (he made $4 million last season), and is coming off of his worst season as a Brewer.

by BrewHaHeather on Nov 14, 2009 10:20 AM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't mind Lowe

Given his deceptively high ERA last season and the Braves pressing desire to shed payroll, he could probably be had for relatively cheap. Lowe has been consistently good (outstanding in ‘08), and his main trouble last year seems to have been a ridiculous pitch to contact rate. If we can just teach him to magically direct all that contact up the middle to Escobar/Gomez we’d be in good shape!

(Maybe even Hart for Lowe straight-up? Gives the Braves salary relief and they RF they want, and clears Hart’s arbitration salary for the Brewers to lighten the financial impact of adding Lowe’s contract.)

If it's a trade they're looking at and you're right about Bush...

… isn’t he more useful as a throw in than as a cut? Or will his salary be too high for that?

Anyone keeping a list of the Brewers’ current salary status – who they’re committed to and for how much? How much room in the payroll do they have with Looper, Hardy, and Cameron (and Counsell, et al) off the books?

by roguejim on Nov 13, 2009 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

I'm fairly sure we are on the hook no matter what

I think the only way we could get off the hook is if Loop declined the player portion. Then he leaves the money on. As of right now it’s basically exactly like what Weathers (Club option). So we pay him money to become an FA.

Looper had the option to void the 2010 club option and go FA. This would void the buyout.
