Brewer Classic Game Thread: Ben Sheets fans 18
Yeah, I'll make a Game Thread for pretty much anything.
Tonight at 5:30, MLB Network is re-airing a classic Ben Sheets performance from May 16, 2004, when Sheets and the shadows at Miller Park combined to strike out 18 Atlanta Braves on May 16, 2004. Tune in to watch Sheets at his very best, or just to see cameos from Chad Moeller, Brady Clark, Lyle Overbay and Wes Helms.
Either way, Sheets and his agent, Casey Close, would love for you to take some time out of your weekend to watch this game and then write Doug Melvin a letter about how great it would be to sign Sheeter to a long term contract. And since the Badgers played this afternoon, the Bucks are off and the Packers don't play until tomorrow, you've got nothing else to do, right?
Ok, actually, there is a Bucks game. Does that change anything? Didn't think so.

Bah...TBS broadcast.
WTF, MLB Network? Didn’t you have access to the home broadcasters?
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

even if they did....
some people feel nostalgic about Skip Caray and may want to listen to him call a game? it would get the Braves fans to watch this game when they have no reason to

I think that's a fair point

Do Braves fans really want to watch their team strike out 18 times?
Would you want to watch Verlander no-hit the Brewers again?

No, but Skip Caray isn't around anymore
Don’t know how sentimental some folks are about him, but I think its a fair enough point. He called games for 33 years, after all.

And wow, did Eddings ever get in Estrada's face over it.
That’s the kind of umpire reaction that should lead to an ump getting a long vacation.

Lyle Overbay was hitting .358 at this point
And somehow he batted fifth, with Bill Hall in the #3 spot.

Actually
I thought “Maybe this was when Hall was good” so I went back and looked – at this point, Hall had a sub-.300 career OBP.

Overbay started the year hitting fifth
And started slowly, too. Why jerk him around in the order when he was heating up? Plus, Hall wasn’t a regular at that point.

Ah, forgot about "The Money Order."
But Overbay didn’t start THAT slowly. He hit .307/.337/.511 in April.

Sorry, Overbay was my favorite Brewer while he was here.
I thought the Brewers were making a mistake trading him to start Fielder. I still think he’d be a nice player to have around if he could play anywhere but first base.

He started heating up at the end of the month
I don’t think him still hitting fifth in mid-May was a big deal, especially given the way Spivey and Ginter (the regular #3 hitters) started. Overbay moved to the #4 spot a few weeks later anyway.

Right
The real crime is “The Money Order,” which led to a .650 OPS’ing Hall in the #3 spot, simply because that’s where second basemen hit.

Braves' announcers just mentioned that Overbay had a 16 game hitting streak going
The streak lasted two more games and ended at 18 the following Wednesday, when Overbay went 0-for-2 and walked twice. He reached base safely in 21 straight games.

Still plenty of great seats available at MP for this one.
Box score says 20,654 are there, but there’s open seats about 5 rows up on field level, so I’m thinking that number included a lot of no-shows.

Wes Helms getting gunned down by Johnny Estrada.
I’m trying to write a joke in there, combined with a complaint about my dentist, and can’t seem to put it together.

I'm so glad that Craig Counsell changed his stance
Watching his old stance is just so hilarious.
(also, what is with this Braves lineup? Every one of these guys but Jaret Wright is still kicking around with some other team, including Nick Green)

Plate umpire for this game was Doug Eddings
Anyone else hearing him say how pitches missed when they’re balls? I don’t recall ever hearing another ump do that.

Isn't Nitkowski the guy who hit Counsell in the face in '98?
I always wonder how players react in the times they face each other after something like that happens.

Wait, Chipper Jones to pinch hit?
Let me guess….he was injured?

MLB Network tells me Chad Moeller has filed for free agency
In case watching him go 0-for-4 with 4 K’s tonight is making you feel nostalgic.

Not sure yet
It was my uncles cat and he doesn’t drive so I was just helping out. They’re keeping to cat overnight at the ER because they don’t know what is wrong with it.

55-5-5
Get the man a beer. 7-8 from outside, shooting better from behind the arc than when toeing the free throw line.
Yeah. He’s good.

Well, some of us live in Minnesota
I was thinking about going to the game last night, but that would have required watching the Wolves. If only I had had a Bucks game to watch….

Ricky Rubio
Well the Wolves have their own version of Brandon Jennings. Rubio is quite the talent. I can’t wait to see them matchup.
Oh wait… I know I’m going to have to.
