Question: Rule 5 Draft Protection
Major eague teams must file their "Reserve lists" on Friday, November 20. In other words, on that day each team's 40-man roster is set in preparation for the Rule 5 draft, which takes place on December 10.
The Brewers' 40-man roster has 33 spots occupied once all the team's free agents are removed. My question is this: which prospects need to be added to protect them from the Rule 5 draft? I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere in the Brewers blogosphere, but I'm not sure where. The only two names I can think of are Lorenzo Cain and Chris Cody.
As a refresher, these are the Rule 5 eligibility criteria, as found on Wikipedia.
Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization's forty man roster and:
- were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years; or
- were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years.

Mass at Brewerfan is usually really good at figuring this out
I may as well not try if you’re confused by it.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
I'm not as much confused as lazy :)
I could try and figure it out tonight but I figured someone must have already.

I say we ask TheJay
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I'd be open to him coming over
Although I haven’t approached him about it.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
How about Theron?
Or maybe statsllc’s son?

I tried it a few weeks ago.
This may not be a comprehensive list and you may want to check my math, but here are the primary guys I came up with, sorted by primary 2009 level:
AAA:
Freddy Parejo
Brendan Katin
Chris Cody
AA:
Nick Green
David Welch
Brandon Kintzler
Shane Justis
Taylor Green
Lorenzo Cain
Zach Braddock
A+
Mike Ramlow
Rafael Lluberes
A-
Brock Kjeldgaard
Also, any minor league free agent signed (or re-signed) before the Rule 5 draft should also be eligible.
Of them, I’d say Braddock, Cain and Green need to be protected. Beyond that, you can make an argument for a few more, but it depends on how many roster spots you have free.

good point
I’d include both Greens, as Nick is not that far removed from prospect status and still has decent stuff. And it’s looking like we’ll need some warm bodies to pitch for Nashville next year.
Chris Cody as well
I think he definitely deserves to be protected. I would be amazed if no one picked him up.
(which means the wiki article needs better phrasing)
Here’s a BA column about the rule 5 draft from before the change to 4 and 5 years.

someone needs to edit Wikipedia
not me, as I can’t get to it right now…or to BA for that matter, but thanks for the link for further reference.
"someone needs to edit Wikipedia"
everyone already does.

oh, I know
I know some people have a pet peeve about people who complain that Wikipedia is wrong but don’t go in there to edit. I was joking that I would go edit it but didn’t have the time or the ability at that time of day.
i don't have the time or ability at any point of the day.

I do most of my editing at 3 AM
and it’s usually pointless crap like fixing typos or writing paragraphs about Chris Narveson.
