Apparently Chris Cody and Mike Jones are going to be left off.

The 40-man roster now stands at 35.

Jazz guitarist John Scofield is in jail?

I didn’t think he’s that good, but jail time seems a little harsh.

That can't be all of it.

We’ve got until Friday to set the roster, right? Why would we need 5 extra roster spots? Is the Mustache planning on bringing in a haul of FAs? I’m a little surprised about Cody, but I’d be more surprised about a 35 man roster heading into the Hot Stove.

when's the actual rule 5 draft

does DM just have 5 of those he’s eyeing up? but then it’s 25 man spots to be concerned about….how many of those are free?

I could be wrong...

But don’t guys become FAs if they are taken off the 40 man roster? I’m guessing you would want to leave yourself with some flexibility, right?

Yep

December 10th to be exact.

Few teams enter a season with a full 40 man roster

37 or 38 is the usual number, just so there is some flexibility for trades or injury replacements. So the team has 2-3 “available” spots on the 40 man right now, with the expectation to sign 2 SP during free agency and possibly Craiggers. While there are open slots, they are kinda sorta spoken for so you don’t want to burn them just to keep a 24 year old dude in A+ from possibly leaving the organization.

I wonder what Cain's trade value is.

It seems like folks are higher on Logan Schafer as the potential future in CF, and with the defensive powerhouse out there right now, he’s probably expendable.

Maybe some low A-baller, hm? Remember the Gabe Gross trade? While Josh Butler isn’t pitching particularly well right now, he seemed to take some nice steps forward during the season last year, and he looked somewhat underwhelming when he came over in that trade. Would it even matter if Cain were included in a package for a pitcher in a trade?

I don’t have a category for "washed-up guys who may or may not be dominant big-league closers sometime soon."

He probably holds enough value

IIRC he was a top 10 prospect at the beginning of the year, according to BA and he still has a lot fo upside. He just doesn’t have quite as much value to the Brewers any more because Schafer is right behind him.

Selling him right now would be a mistake.

He’s coming off easily the worst season of his pro career, so his value has bottomed out. Give him a year to see if he bounces back and if he does (and Gomez manages to cement himself into the plans in center), then maybe you can get something of value for him.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
